Ellibeş küçük bebeği soğukkanlılıkla öldürenlere onları unutmadığımızı göstermenin zamanı geldi.

Hasdal İBB Kısırlaştırma Merkezi’ne toplanarak masum canların zalimce alınmasını protesto etmek uzere biz katılın.

Hadi bu günü sonsuza kadar unutulmayacak bir gün yapalım.

Hadi ölüm ve işkenceden zevk alanlara sesimizi duyurup o kana susamış kararları almadan önce bir kere daha düşünmelerini sağlayalım.

Yeni salgın: Hayvanlar üzerinden ırkçılık!

Kimi zaman insanlar soruyor: Sana göre bu ülkenin en büyük sorunu ne?

Türkiye muhteşem bir yer. Her yerden zekâ, enerji ve gençlik dolup taşıyor. Son derece konuk sever harika insanlar. Burada olduğum için gerçekten çok mutluyum.

Yine de toplumdaki en endişe verici olgunun, bence, hangisi olduğunu söylemem gerekirse cevabım açık: Aşırı-milliyetçilik.

Aşırı-milliyetçilik ve yabancı düşmanlığı (ksenofobi) bu topraklarda doğmadı. Bu kavram insanoğlu kadar eski. Aşırı-milliyetçilik ve yabancı düşmanlığı, ilkel toplumlarda, toplumu işgalci yabancılardan korumak amacıyla oluştu/oluşturuldu (söyleniyor ya da tahmin ediliyor). Ancak sorun şu ki, bu kavram pratikte hiçbir zaman yürümedi. Toplumu güçlendirmesi gerekirken onu zayıflattı. Zayıflattı çünkü tanımı, toplumu oluşturan insanları kısıtlıyordu. Sonuçta aşırı-milliyetçi bu düşman görüşü benimseyen kişiler, toplumun en alt kademesinde, “öteki”ne karşı her daim bir nefret (ve korku) besleyerek marjinal bireyler olarak yaşamayı seçtiler. Ve yalnız ve yalnız kendi bakış açıları paylaşan kişilerle iletişim kurabildiler.

Aşırı-milliyetçilik bu ülkeye has bir olgu olmasa da, benim gördüğüm kadarıyla, yalnızca Türkiye ve Yunanistan’da var olan bir kavram var: “Yabancı düşmanı-ırkçı hayvan sever”

Türkiye’deki hayvan severlerden bir kısmının nasıl olup da böyle bir delilik seviyesine inebildiği beni aşıyor. Üzücü olan nokta şu ki, böyle bir kesim var. Nasıl olur da zavallı ve acı çeken bir sokak köpeğini aşırı-milliyetçi bir sembole dönüştürebilirsiniz?.. Gerçek ve tek amacı hayvan kurtarmak olan bir eğilimi/hareketi nasıl olur da hayvan ölülerinin başında aşırı-milliyetçi ağıtlar yakılan bir gösteriye dönüştürürsünüz?.. Bunlar beni kat be kat aşıyor.

Türkiye’deki “hayvan hareketi”nin arkasındaki karanlık sır işte bu. Sayıları hiç de azımsanamayacak rakamları bulan bu kişiler, içlerinde en ufak bir sevgi kırıntısı ya da yaşam hakkına saygı barındırmadan, yalnızca toplumda bir yer edinebilmek, bir “kesim”e ait olabilmek adına bu yola giriyorlar. Hayvanlara yardım etmek isteyenlerin büyük çoğunluğu, sevecen ve her zaman yardıma hazır harika insanlarla tanışıyor. Ancak birkaç talihsiz kişi, yanlış yola sapıp yanlış gruplarda kayboluyor: Bu gruplar nefret ve “öteki”ne duyulan korkuyla hareket ediyor. Öyle ki kendi kendine yetemeyen bu kişiler, aralarında canavar yabancıların Türk hayvanları üzerinden çıkar sağlamaları ve sokak köpeklerini Çin lokantalarına satmaları vs gibi komplo teorileri bile üretiyorlar. Bir komplo kuramcısının hayal gücü sınır tanımaz…

Bu hastalığın tedavisi yok. Ancak öyle görünüyor ki hastalık, aileleri tarafından kalıtsal olarak beyinlerine kazınan birkaç kişiden öteye de gitmiyor. Sorun şu ki, buradaki problem yalnızca genetik değil. Birkaç kişiyle sınırlı kalabilecek olan bu hastalık, Internet aracılığıyla bulaşıcı ve yaygın bir hal alıyor.

Yukarıda okuduğunuz yazının hiçbir bilimsel dayanağı yok. Tek kaynağı, yaklaşık yedi yıldır bu ülkede yaşamanın ve başta ve özellikle hayvanların refahı olmak üzere tüm ülke sorunlarını yakından takip etmemin bana öğrettikleri. Tam altı yıldır bu hasta beyinlerin içi boş saçma sapan komplo teorilerini dinliyorum. Kim olduklarını açıklamak isterdim ancak o kadar kalabalıklar ki!..

Sahip Çıkalım!.. ile neden bu kadar övündüğümü, gurur duyduğumu biliyor musunuz? Hepinizle gurur duyuyorum… Öncelikle kurtardığınız hayvanlar ve harika hikâyeleri ve ikinci olarak da toplumda geldiğimiz nokta için… Ancak gururumun en önemli ve ana nedeni, bu grubun beni sizler gibi insanlarla buluşturması ve her gün hayat kurtarıyor olmamız. Yalnız hayvan hayatından söz etmiyorum burada. Aynı zamanda, milliyeti bir “kriter” olarak görmeyen hayvan sahiplerini, Sahip Çıkalım!.. aracılığıyla, en büyük desteği alacağı hayvan dostlarıyla bir araya getiriyoruz. Sizler gibi insanlar…

İşte bu yüzden, Sahip Çıkalım!..’ın bugün dünyanın her köşesinden üyesi var. Sekiz ayrı ülkede aktif olarak hayat kurtarıyoruz (Sahip Çıkalım!.. Fransa dün kuruldu.) Türk-temelli hiçbir grup bu başarıya ulaşamadı ya da bu kadar kalabalık bir deha ve gönül grubu oluşturamadı.

İşte bu yüzden Sahip Çıkalım!..’ı seviyorum.

A new disease: Animal nationalism!

Sometimes people ask me: What do you see as the biggest problem of this country?

Turkey is a wonderful place, filled to the brim with bright, energetic, young things. Wonderful hospitable people. I truly love it here.

Still, when people ask me which one is, to me, the most worrying aspect of this society my answer is clear: ultra-nationalism.

Ultra-nationalism and xenophobia was not invented here, it is something as old as human beings. It developed in the early societies as a way to protect the group against invaders (supposedly or imaginary). The problem is, it never worked. Instead of making societies stronger it weakened them as by definition this attitude limits those who endorse it. As a result, those who sponsor ultra-nationalistic tend to live in the lowest echelons of society, marginalized individuals living in hate (and fear) of the outsider, and only being able to communicate with those who harbor their same views.

Whilst ultra-nationalism is not exclusive of this country, there is a movement which, to my knowledge, is exclusive of Turkey and Greece, and that is the “racist-xenophobic animal lover”.

How did a number of animal lovers in this country descended into such madness is beyond me. The sad fact is, they did. How can you turn an poor and suffering stray dog into an ultra-nationalistic symbol? How can twist the essence of the animal rescue movement to a point where around the dying corpses of animals you manage to scream ultra nationalist anthems is completely beyond me.

This is the dark secret of the turkish animal welfare movement. A great number of those who go into this cause do so no guided by love and respect for living creatures, but as a way to fit into society, to find their way into a group of people. The vast majority of those who reach out will find wonderful compassionate people, always willing to help, but a few unlucky ones will fall into the wrong groups, groups motivated by hate and fear of the foreigner, where a bunch of inadequate individuals exchange conspiracy theories about evil foreigners using Turkish animals for their own gain, selling stray dogs to Chinese restaurants, etc.. etc.. etc.. the imagination of a conspiracy theorist is endless…

There is no cure to this ill, as it seems to be a condition genetically engraved in the diminished brains of a few. The problem is, it is not only genetic, thanks to the internet, it has turned contagious, infectious.

What you have read is by no means supported by scientific evidence, it is merely the outcome of close to seven years of living and breathing the problems of this country, and in particular the issues related to animal welfare. Six years of listening to the mad ramblings of sick people and their conspiracy theories. I would love to give names, but there are so many of them…

You know why I am so proud of Let’s Adopt!? I’m proud of you all not only because of the amazing success stories, the animals saved, the influence we have achieved in this society, the main reason why I am so proud of this group has enabled me to find people like you, and because every day we are saving lives, not only animal lives, but the lives of those animal lovers who, through us, find a great support group of people for whom nationality doesn’t matter. People like you.

And this is why, today, Let’s Adopt! has members all over the world and officially operates in 8 countries (we launched Let’s Adopt (France) yesterday. No turkish-based animal group has achieved this feat, no turkish group has gathered such brilliant group of minds and hearts.

This is why I love Let’s Adopt!.

Simba, Hayatımı Değiştiren Terrier…

Bugünün yazısı, Simba’ya, ondan her bahsedişimde gözlerimin dolu dolu olması ve boğazımın düğümlenmesine dair olacak.

Sanıyorum ki çoğunuz Sahip Çıkalım’ın çıkış öyküsünü, bu işe nasıl başladığımızı bilmiyorsunuz…

6 Ocak 2008, yaşlı Terrier’im Simba, ameliyat masasında hayatını kaybetti. Memelerindeki tümörler sebebi ile tedavi görüyordu. Tümörler yayıldı. Sahibi, onu kısırlaştırmadığı için hastalığa yakalanmıştı. Bunun yerine onu çiftleştirmişti. Simba, o kör haliyle başının çaresine baksın diye sokaklara atıldığında 14 yaşındaydı.

Bu fotoğraf, onu SHKD’de ilk gördüğüm anda çekilmişti. Barınakta çalışanlar ciddi davranış bozukluğu olan kör bir köpeğin varlığından bahsetmişlerdi. Kimseyi yanına yaklaştırmıyordu, cesur ve haşindi… Ona ait ilk anım, bir tomar gri tüyün aniden üstüme saldırarak beni öldürmeye çalışmasıydı. Sonra, aniden hırlamayı kesip elimi yalamaya başmıştı.

İlk görüşte aşktı bizimki. O gün barınaktan, herkesin korktuğu ve kimsenin istemediği o kör köpekle beraber ayrıldım. Bu yaşlı köpek hayatımı sonsuza dek değiştirecekti.

Neredeyse üç sene boyunca Simba ve ben hep beraberdik. Bana çok düşkündü ve benden başka kimseye güvenmediğini söylersem abartmış sayılmam. Başlarda diğer iki köpeğimle beraber evde kalırken, zaman içinde benimle beraber toplantılara bile gelmeye başlamıştı. Simba, daha önce hiç bir köpeğin bulunmadığı yerlere gidiyordu.
Simba kördü. Tedavisi yapılmamış hipermatüre kataraktı vardı… Durum karmaşıktı ve çok acı çekiyordu. Simba’yı iki kere ameliyat ettirdim.

Sadece çok az bir süre görebildi ve yeniden kör oldu. Sonra kanseri ilerledi.

Tüm bu yıllar boyunca inanılmaz yoğunlukta deneyimler yaşadık birlikte, buna ailemin dağılması da dahil. Tamamen dürüst olmam gerekirse, itiraf etmeliyim ki, vazgeçtiğim anlarda bana hep Simba engel oldu.

Simba, Ali’nin ameliyat masasında hayata gözlerini yumdu. Tarih 6 Ocak 2008′di ve ben orada, onun yanında değildim.

Simba benim için müthiş bir öğretmendi. Bana şefkatin gerçek anlamını, hayatta hep dik durmayı, sebat etmeyi ve yenildiğim anlarda bile asla vazgeçmeyip, ayakta kalmayı öğretti. O bana, sonsuz güvenin gerçek anlamını öğretti.

Bugün, hepimiz, burada bu yazıyı Simba’nın sayesinde okuyoruz. Bugün, ağımız sayesinde arkadaşlıklar kuran hepiniz, kurtardığımız köpekler ve hayatlarına mutluluk kattığımız tüm aileler, hepimiz, bunu Cesur Yürek Simba’ya borçluyuz.

Simba, the terrier that changed my life.

Today’s post is likely to be brief mainly due to the fact that whenever I try to write or speak about her I get all teary eyed and I get a fist stuck in my throat.

I realize that many of you don’t know the history of Let’s Adopt!, how we began…

6 of January 2008, my old rescued blind terrier Simba passed away on the operation table. She was being operated of mammary tumors. It had spread. She developed the disease because her previous “owner” did not neutered her. Instead they bred her. When Simba was 14 years old she was thrown to the streets, blind, to fend for herself.
This picture was taken the moment I saw her for the first time at SHKD. The workers had told me that there was a blind dog with serious behavior issues. She wouldn’t let anyone get anywhere near her, she was fearless, and fierce… My first memory of her is of a grey ball of hair lunging at me wanting to kill me. She then suddenly stopped growling, and started licking my hand.

It was love at first sight. I left the shelter with the old blind dog that everyone feared and nobody wanted. That old dog would change my life forever.

For nearly three years Simba and I spent all our time together. She was very attached to me and I would go as far as saying that she
trusted no one but me. At first she would stay at home with our other two dogs but in time she would end up coming with me to my meetings.

Simba went to places where no dog had been before.

Simba was blind, a hypermature cataract that went untreated… The condition complicated and she was in a lot of pain. I had her operated twice, and she recovered sight slightly only to loose it again. Then, cancer developed…

During her years with me we went through incredibly powerful experiences, including the break-up of our family pack. I am being
truly honest when I tell you that she kept me going at times when I considered giving up.

Simba passed away at Ali’s operation table on the 6th of January 2008. I was not there to hold her.
Simba was a great teacher for me. She taught me the real meaning of compassion, she taught me to be tough, to persevere, to never give up and always stand tall, even at times of defeat.

Today, you are all here, right now, reading this post, because of her. Today all of you who have formed friendships through our network, the dogs that we have saved, the families that they have brought joy to, we are all indebted to Simba, the Braveheart.

Paris Before

Sevgili Dostlar,
Sahip Çıkalım! son iki senedir, bitmez tükenmez bir gayretle üyelerini hayvan sahiplenme, kısırlaştırma ve hayvanlarla ilgili diğer konularda eğitmeye çalıştı.
Son iki senedir, hem Türkiye’de hem de yurt dışında, daha önce örneği görülmemiş, eşi benzeri olmayan bir bağlantılar ağı, her sorunu çözecek ilişkiler kurmaktayız. Bu süreç içinde, üyelerimizin inancı ve güvenini kazandık.
Ancak yine de başaramadığımız hissine kapılıyoruz.
İnsanlara en can alıcı kısmı anlatmayı başaramadık: SORUMLULUK

Başarısızlık riskini minimuma indirebilmek için Türkiye’de var olan en ağır sahiplenme kurallarını getirdik: Sahip Çıkalım! evinizde bir hayvan beslemediğiniz takdirde size bir başkasını vermeyecek. Sahip Çıkalım! hiçbir hayvanı bahçede ya da fabrika türü bir yerde bakılmak üzere sahiplendirmeyecek. Bu kurallar bizler için son derece iyi işlese de aslında kurtarabileceğimiz hayvan sayısını kısıtladı. Ancak bu kısıtlamaya rağmen, neredeyse % 100’e yakın bir başarı oranını da garantiledi.
Sorunlar beklentilerle başladı. Gerçek şu ki, son derece sert olan söylemimizin altında, aslında bizler oldukça yumuşak kalpli insanlarız ve bu nedenle, daha koyduğumuz ilk kural üzerinden beklentiye girdik… Hayvan sahiplenmek istediği sırada evinde herhangi bir hayvan beslemeyen “hayvan sever”lerin sözlerine inandık, bu insanların ne hayvanları ne de bizleri hayal kırıklığına uğratmayacaklarını düşündük.

Bu tür sahiplendirmelerin çoğu başarısızlıkla sonuçlandı… Yaşanan ekonomik kriz zaten zor olan yaşam koşullarını daha da zorlaştırdı ve bugün, hayvanları sahiplenirken “sonsuz bir sevgi ile sevecekleri” sözünü veren kişiler, bu hayvanları tekrar bizlerin sırtına yüklüyorlar. Hem de eşi benzeri görülmemiş bir oran ve hızla…
Bütün bunlar nedeniyle birtakım tedbirler almak zorunda kaldık:
1.    Sahip Çıkalım! bir daha ASLA “bir hayvan kuralı” konusunda istisna yapmayacak. İnsanlar hayvanı ne kadar isterse istesin, ne kadar söz verirse versin, bir daha asla istisnalar olmayacak.
2.    Sahip Çıkalım!, bugün itibariyle, yeni vakalar almayı kesmiştir. Şu anda bakımını üstlendiğimiz hayvanları sahiplendirmek için elimizden gelenin en iyisini yapacağız. Ancak hiçbir yeni hayvan alınmayacak.

3.    Sahip Çıkalım! sahiplendirmeye devam edecek ancak bütün kaynak ve gayretini yurt dışındaki ortak ağını geliştirmek/güçlendirmek ve hayvanları sahiplendirme başarımızın en basit ifadesiyle % 100 olduğu yurt dışında yuvalandırmaya odaklayacak.
Dolayısıyla, bugünden itibaren, yerel olarak sahiplendirme konusundaki yardım taleplerinizi yanıtlayamayacağız. Eğer içinizden biri, bir hayvan sahiplenmek isterse, lütfen bizi arayın. Sizin uygun bir sahip olacağınıza inanırsak, size yardıma muhtaç bir hayvan buluruz ancak son köpeğimizi de sahiplendirdikten sonra, bir daha yerel yuva arayışına girmeyeceğiz.

Bu, Sahip Çıkalım!’ın yuva arayışına son verdiği anlamına gelmiyor. Tam aksine, sahiplendirmeye devam edeceğiz, ancak çok daha seçici bir biçimde… En çaresiz vakaları tek tek seçeceğiz: Sakat köpekler, üç bacaklı hayvanları, körler… Bu hayvanları özenle seçecek ve onları yurt dışında sahiplendireceğiz. Bütün bunları hiçbir masraftan kaçınmadan yapacağız. Umuyoruz ki, bir gün Türkiye’de yaşayan hayvan severler ne yapmaya çalıştığımızı anlayacak ve adlarına yakışır bir şekilde davranacak: Evindeki koltuğa en çok uyacak köpeği (ki bu köpek sahibi için en ufak bir sorun yarattığında kapının önüne koyulacaktır) arayan kaprisli ve aptal insanlar yerine özverili hayvan severler olacaklar…

Bu yeni politika bizi daha da özgürleştirecek ve bu sayede BÜTÜN zaman ve kaynaklarımızı sorumlu insanların kendi başlarına halledebilecekleri konular yerine eğitime ayırabileceğiz. Toplumun “hayvan sever” kesimi birçok kademede eğitime muhtaç: Hayvanların davranış ve ihtiyaçları, kısırlaştırma ve diğer ahlaki konular…
Sahip Çıkalım! bu boşluğu doldurarak yoluna devam edecek…

Ears Before...

Dear Friends,

For the last two years Let’s Adopt has worked tirelessly to educate its members about adoption, sterilization and animal issues.
For two years we have been building an unprecedented network of connections, facilitating relationships, both within Turkey and overseas. In the process we have earned credibility and the trust of our members.
However we feel we have failed.
We have failed at instilling the most basic of the messages into people’s heads. Responsibility.
In order to reduce the chances of failure we set up the toughest adoption rules in Turkey. Let’s Adopt wouldnt give you an animal unless you currently had an animal at home, Let’s Adopt would not give any animals in adoption destined to be kept on a garden, or a factory. Those rules have worked very very well for us. True, it has limited the amount of animals we could save, but it ensured a nearly total success rate.

The problem came when we made exceptions. The truth is, under our tough retoric we are very soft-hearted people, we made expections to the first rule, we believed the words of “animal lovers” who didnt have an animal right then but who promised us they would never let their animals, and us, down.

In the vast majority of those those adoptions have failed… The economic crisis has made things tougher, and people who promised eternal love for their animals are now dumping their animals back on us at an unprecedented rate.

All of this forces us to take three measures:

1. Let’s Adopt will NEVER make another exception to the One animal rule. No matter how much those people want the animal, no matter how many promises, we wont make exceptions again. Never.

2. Let’s Adopt stops, as of today, to take up new cases. We will do our best to place the animals we currently have under our care, but no more new cases will be considered.

3. Let’s Adopt will continue rehoming but it will focus all its resources and efforts in strengthening its overseas partner network and rehoming our animals overseas, where our success rate is, simply put, 100%.

As of today we wont be able to answer your request of assistance with new cases to be rehomed locally. If any of you wants to adopt an animal by any means call us and, if we believe you are suitable well find an animal in need for you but after we have placed our last dog we wont be seeking local adoptions any longer.

This, does not mean Let’s Adopt will stop rehoming, not at all. We will continue doing so but in an even more selective way. We will be handpicking the most desperate cases, the handicapped animals, the three legged, the blind ones, and will rehome them overseas. We will be doing so regardless the expense in the hope that one day, the “animal lovers” of Turkey will have understood what we are trying to do and will live up to their name becoming just that, selfless animal lovers instead of capricious silly people looking for the cutest dog to match their leather sofa. Dogs that will be dumped the moment they have the slightest personal problem.

This new direction will allow us to be freer and to dedicate ALL our time and resources to education instead of having to deal with issues that responsible people should be able to deal with on their own. The “animal loving” community is in desperate need of education at multiple levels, animal behavior and needs, animal nutrition, even moral issues… Let’s Adopt! will continue providing just that.

Bahçeşehir: Kibirde Boğulmak

Bunları İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Sayın Kadir Topbaş’ın selden etkilenen Silivri’ye yaptığı ve utandıran ziyareti TV’de
seyrettikten sonra yazıyorum. Kent, felaketin yanında son derece eksik kalan tepki ve Belediyelerin hazırlıksızlığı nedeniyle çaresiz kalmış durumda. İnsanlar kızgın, sorular soruyorlar, Sayın Topbaş insanlarla empati veya kenti
etkileyen bu trajediye dair bir bağ kuramıyor.

Kaçınılmaz olarak Türkiye’yi perişan eden 1999 depreminin anıları canlanıyor gözümüzde. Bir gecede neredeyse 55 000 kişi hayatlarını kaybetti. Hükümetin yardımı geç ve yetersiz kaldı. Kurbanların sayısı o zamandan bu zamana hep eksik gösterildi.

2009… 10 yıl sonra ülke Başakşehir Belediye Başkanı Sayın Mevlüt Uysal‘ı TV’deki kibrine şahitlik ediyor. Başakşehir sınırları içindeki Bahçeşehir Barınağında  bir grup gönüllü çamura saplanmış hayvanları kurtarmak için çırpınırken sayın Uysal kameralar karşısında defalarca yardım taleplerini reddediyor. Başkan kurtarma çalışmalarına yardım etmiyor, çaresiz durumdaki hayvanların kurtarılması için parmağını bile kıpırdatmıyor.

Sayın Uysal kendisine telefon edilmesini, soru sorulmasını saygısızlık olarak görüyor, yardım istenmesini bir hakaret kabul ediyor.
Kibir. Hakaret gibi ve kabul edilmez bir kibir. Örneklerini daha önce de görmüştük. Adı hayvan haklarına ve kanunlara karşı çıkmakla bir anılan Beykoz’un eski belediye başkanı Muharrem Ergül’de görmüştük aynı tavrı.

Sahip Çıkalım! ateşli bir kamuoyu savaşı verdi ve kazandı. Ergül partisi tarafından tekrar aday gösterilmedi.

olarak görevlerinin hatırlatılması gerekiyor.

sizin oylarınızla geliyorlar. Ve sizin oylarınızla güç sahibi olanlar siz sessiz ve tepkisiz kaldıkça isteklerinizi bir kenara itmeye devam
edecekler.

Sahip Çıkalım! 22 000 üyesi adına, ve ülkenin diğer hayvan hakları gruplarının da öfkesinin sesi olarak Sayın Uysal’dan kamuoyu önünde bir özür dilemesini ve Bahçeşehir Barınağında 130 canın acı ve bitkinlik içinde ölümüyle sonuçlanan bu trajediden doğrudan sorumlu olan ekibi derhal görevden almasını talep ediyor.

I write this after watching footage of the embarassing visit of Mr Kadir Topbaş, the Mayor of the Istanbul Greater Municipality to Silivri, a  district severy affected by the floods.

Innocent Victim

Mr. Uysal considered a sign of disrespect to be telephoned, questioned, he considered an insult to be asked for help.

Mr. Uysal rejected to accept the offers of help from the Greater Municipality and others. In the end assistance was sent to them  anyway.

Today we are making an appeal to action. Mr. Uysal has to be confronted with a general show of reject and dissaproval that reminds of his duties as elected representative.

Rescued

Kısa bir süre önce bir üyemiz, ve aynı zamanda çok çok sevgili bir arkadaşımız oturduğu bölgede apartmanın demir parmaklarına
zincirlenmiş bir köpek olduğunu fark etti. Ardından köpek hakkında bilgi edinip çocuğun doğru dürüst bir ev, sevilip bakılacağı bir yuva bulmak üzere yardım önerisinde bulundu. Köpeğin sahibi yardımı kabul etti yazılı olarak bunu belirtti ayrıca köpeğin ne yemekten hoşlandığını, nerede uyumayı sevdiğini de ekledi mektubuna.
Arkadaşımız köpeğe birkaç gün geçici olarak baktıktan sonra bir yuva bulmamız için bize teslim etti.

Buraya kadar herşey normal gelişti. Ama hemen sonra komedi başladı. İnsanlar bizi gecenin bir vakti arayarak köpeği kaçırdığımızı, ve hemen geri vermemiz gerektiğini söylediler. Öyle çok kişi işe karıştı ki sayısını bile aklımızda tutamaz olduk.

Sonunda arkadaşımızı “köpek kaçırmak” ve ne ne demek oluyorsa, “Kemerburgaz Mafyası”na teslim etmekle suçlayarak mahkemeye verdiler. Duyuruda hepimizin ismi geçiyordu. Görüşmelerimizi yaparak olayın detaylarını kendi bakış açımızla ilgililere ilettik. Yakınlarda, ülkemizin bilge ve adaletli savcıları bu duyuru hakkında kovuşturmaya gerek olmadığına ve konunun yargıya intikal etmeye değer bulunmadığına hükmettiler.

Bu, bizi nefret, ikilik ve utançlarının hedefi haline getiren o “insanlara”: Bizi mahkemeye verin! Hadi, gidip bizi dava edin! Bize
yönelttiğiniz tüm suçlamalarla ilgili olarak MASUMUZ ve inanıyoruz ki yaptıklarımız ve yöntemlerimiz doğru. Eğilmeyeceğiz, saklanmayacağız, korkmayacağız, tehditlerinize kanmayacağız, ve vazgeçmeyeceğiz.

Hayat kurtarmaya ve insanlara esin vermeye devam edeceğiz.

Ülkemizde adalet olabildiğince kusursuz ve lekesiz. Bunu ilk elden yaşıyoruz. Yüce yargının her kademesindeki, insanın suçlu mu masum mu olduğunu gözünün içine bakıp anlayan ciddi ve ağırbaşlı insanlara hayranlık besliyoruz.

Şu anda bizi yıllardır rahatsız edenlere karşı pek çok duyurularda bulunulmakta. Bir sürü insan bizi toplum önünde küçük düşürmeye çalışan, ancak kendilerini dinleyecek “toplum” bulamayanları adalete kendi elleriyle taşımaya karar verdi. Bu “insanlara” soruyoruz; savcıların gözlerine bakıp “ben yapmadım…” diyebilecek misiniz?

ADALET var bu ülkede.

Justice

Dear Friends,

There are rumours, slander and insult and we stand up for what is right. They can throw mud at us, they can throw stones at us, but we stand up for what is right. They can make up stories, they can even make you believe in them, but we stand up for what is right. They threaten us, they try and scare us with their pathetic words, but we stand up for what is right. They can accuse us of wrong doings, illegal acts, unlawful conduct but we will still stand up for what is right.

Not long ago a group member and a dear dear friend noticed that in her neighbourhood there was a dog chained to the steel bars of an
apartment building. Then she found out about the dog and offered her help to find the poor thing a proper home where he’ll be loved and cared for. The owner agreed and gave our friend a written consent and list of what the dog likes to eat and how he’d like to sleep etc. Our friend, after fostering the dog for a couple of days, entrusted us to find a home for him.

Rescued

This is all very nice and normal until now. But then the comedy began.

People started calling us in the middle of the night telling us we had kidnapped the dog and he should be returned. There were so many of those involved that we lost count.

Finally, they  took our friend to court for “kidnapping” the dog and giving it to ‘Kemerburgaz Mafia’, whatever the hell that means. We
were all named in the case and gave our detailed versions of the events to the authorities. Recently, the wise and just prosecutors of
this country decided that the case had no merit and therefore, will not to be carried to the judge.

This is to all those “people” who chose us as the target of their hatred, bigotry and shame:  Sue us! Go ahead and sue us! We are
innocent of all the crimes you accuse us of and we believe that what we do and how we do it is right. We will not budge, we will not hide, we will not be afraid, we will not give in to threats, we will not give up.

We will continue to save lives and inspire people.

Justice in our country is as perfect and as untainted as it gets. We have been witnessing this first hand. We are in awe of our solemn and serious men of justice who look into the eyes of the people and are able to tell in an instant who is innocent and who isn’t.

There are now charges being pressed for those who have been harassing us for years. Many many people have finally taken it up in their hands to seek justice against those who have tried to humiliate us publicly, although they found no public to listen to their lunacy. We ask these “people”, will you be able to look at your prosecutor in the eye and say “I haven’t done it…”?

There is JUSTICE in this country.

Bu, Sahip Çıkalım!’ın potansiyeline bir kanıt.

Sadece 2 hafta önce Lakita İspanya’da bir barınaka yaşıyordu. Dünyanın her yerindeki çoğu barınakta olduğu gibi buradaki koşullar da onun için uygun değildi.

Sahip Çıkalım! uluslararası ağını kullanarak Lakita’nın kurtarılmasını ve sahiplenilmesini organize etti. Önce onu arabayla Endülüs’ten Madrid’e getirdik, buradan da Kanada’da Edmonton’a uçtu.

İşte şimdi orada… bu resimleri birkaç saat önce aldık.

Lakita's previous home in Spain

This is proof of the potential of the Let’s Adopt Network.

Two weeks ago Lakita was living on a Spanish shelter. The conditions there, like in the vast majority of shelters around the world, were not suitable for her.

Let’s Adopt, by using its international network coordinated her rescue and adoption. First we drove her from Andalusia to Madrid, and from there we flew her to Edmonton Canada.

And here she is.. we received this great picture barely an hour ago…

Following the North American Journey of Federico Garcia Lorca, a poet in New York, Lakita is now an andalusian dog in Canada. We wish her the best in her new life with Grace.

Let’s Adopt!… amazing people.

Over the coming months we will establish a network of adoption into Canada and the US. We will therefore need flight volonteers to fly
into any location in the US and Canada from Turkey and Spain.

Melike Acar Çizgi Roman Projesini iftira, hakaret ve baskılar yüzünden bırakıyor…

Melike Acar’ın Sahip Çıkalım! çizgi roman projesinden ayrıldığını büyük bir üzüntüyle duyurmak zorundayız.

Kendi sözcükleriyle:

Son birkaç gündür Melike inanılmaz bir baskıya maruz kaldı. Hepimizin çok yakından tanıdığı iki kişi hayatını çekilmez hale getirdi. Onu vatan hainliğiyle, teröristlikle, Sahip Çıkalım’a üye ve benim arkadaşım olmakla suçladılar.

Neticede Melike internet karalamacılarının baskılara dayanamadı ve vazgeçti.

Onun gidişi bu projenin sona erdiği anlamına gelmiyor. Sahip Çıkalım! baskılara asla boyun eğmeyecek. Bu acınası insanlar aramızdan birisinin moralini bozabilirler ama ülkemizin en büyük hayvan hakları örgütlenmesi olan grubumuza hiç bir zarar veremezler. Dahası, ben ben olduğum sürece Sahip Çıkalım!’ın politikasını ve kararlarımızı asla etkileyemeyezler.

Önünmüzdeki günlerde bu projenin sorumluluğunu üstlenecek sanatçı ve/veya sanatçıları açıklayacağız.

Türkiye’de “hayvanseverler” konusunda rüya aleminde değilim. Tek istediğim hayvanların iyiliği ve hayatım boyunca tek bir “hayvansever”le daha muhatap olmazsam mutlu öleceğim. Ülkemizdeki hayvan hakları hareketi derbeder durumda çünkü insanların tek yaptığı konuşmak, işe girişmek değil.

Sahip Çıkalım! insanlara örnek olarak onları yönlendirmek üzere kuruldu ve bunu yapmaya devam edecek. Ancak biz hayvanları özgürleştirmeye çalışır, insanların cehaletiyle, hayatlarımıza ve onurumuza karşı saldırılarla, hakaret ve karalamalarla savaşırken hayvanlar kafeslerinde, barınaklarda, cadde köşelerinde, zincirlerin ucunda, atıldıkları ormanlarda susuzluk, açlık ve çaresizlikten kurtarılmayı bekliyorlar.

Her millet hakettiği kaderi yaşar ve öyle görünüyor ki bu milletin hakettiği kader de bu.

Melike Acar leaves the Comic Book project due to slander and pressure.

It is with profound sadness that we must announce the departure of Melike Acar from the Let’s Adopt comic-book project.

Using her words:

“Pressure, court cases, evidences, new enemies, people who shout and insult, quarrel, swear, those who slander my name, my honor, my profession in shitty internet newspapers… All this because of a single draft drawing before I have even started. I cannot eat, cannot sleep for the last week and for I have been crying for the last 2 days. Because of health reasons, until i pull myself together I am postponing the Let’s Adopt! Project. I expect those involved to understand me.”

Over the last few days Melike has been put under amazing pressure. Two individuals whom we all know very well have, simply, made her life impossible. They have accused her of being a traitor to the homeland, of being a terrorist, of supporting Let’s Adopt!, of being my friend….

Her departure doesn’t mean the end of the project. Let’s Adopt won’t ever bow to pressure. These deplorable people can pick and demoralize one of us but they have nothing to do against the largest animal welfare movement in this great nation of ours. Furthermore, as long as I am who I am they will never be able to dictate Let’s Adopt policies or influence our decisions.

I have no illusions about animal lovers in Turkey. All I want is the good of the animals and as far as I am concerned if I never spoke to another “animal lover” I would die a happy bunny. Animal welfare in Turkey is a mess, and it is so because people talk so much and do nothing. Let’s Adopt was created to lead people by example and you can be sure we will continue doing that. But whilst we devout our lives to free animals, to fight people’s ignorance, their threats to our lives and honour, their insults and slander,  the animals wait to be saved from hunger, thirst and desperation in cages, shelters, at the corners of streets, chained to posts, dumped into forests…

Every nation is lives the fate it deserves and it seems that this is what this nation deserves.

Melike, we wish you the best and will support your work every step of the way.  We understand your decision and respect it.

Hayvan koruma örgütlerinin diğer sivil toplum örgütlerinden farkı, bu örgütleri oluşturan bireylerin kendi hakları için değil, farklı bir canlı türü olan hayvanların hakları için biraraya gelmiş olmasıdır. Hayvanlar yaratılış itibariyle haklarını savunmak için gerekli yeteneklerden yoksundurlar. Bu işi onlar adına örgütlenen insanlar yapar. Nihayet hayvanlar da bu toplumun parçasıdırlar, bütün canlılar gibi türlerinin gerektirdiği koşullarda yaşama hakkına sahiptirler. Onların tıpkı bebekler, yaşlılar ve düşkün insanlar gibi, zayıf canlılar olmaları haklarının olmadığı ve korunmayacağı anlamına gelmez. Haklarının korunması için acı çekebiliyor olmaları yeterlidir.

NGO’s and GONGO’s in Animal Protection Movement in Turkey

NGO’s are established to expand the area of freedom of individuals in a society.

In modern societies, the purpose of NGO’s is to protect and widen the limits of civil society against the state. In other words, civil society should be active and alert about the risk of the state evolving to be an autocratic one. In modern societies, individual responsibility is not limited with voting but is wide as to include the right to organize to participate in governance.

The distinction of animal protection organizations from other NGO’s is that the individuals there don’t organize for their own rights but for the rights of animals. Animals by nature lack the traits necessary to stand for their rights. Humans who organize for them do this on their behalf. Animals are also a part of the society and as the human members of it, they have the right to live in harmony with their nature. Just like babies and old people, their weakness doesn’t mean their rights will not be protected. The fact that they can suffer is sufficient for them to have rights.

Some of the animal protection organizations in Turkey position themselves as if they know nothing about what an NGO is. Animal Protection Law has been passed in 2004. But still, many municipalities ignore it and continue cruel practices toward animals. The reaction of some animal protection societies to this reflect the ideology of an autocratic society. They prefer to keep silent about the shelters that are death camps, they ignore the fact that some municipalities are still killing dogs and further they accuse the organizations which struggle to end this torture for being traitors to the state and homeland. These are called GONGO’s meaning organizations directed by the government.

State is for serving the people and has to abide by the laws. NGO’s are not founded to pay obedience to the state but in the contrary to force the government to apply the law and further to widen the scope of civil rights which also comprise animal rights. This is the rational behind the existence of NGO’s and of civil society.

Bu Tattoo, 4 haftalık bir kedicik. Tek istediği koşmak, oynamak, başka kediciklerle beraber olmak ama olamıyor.

Neden?

Çünkü Tattoo kör, ve İstanbul’da bir veteriner kliğinde küçük bir kafeste kendisini sahiplenecek aileyi bekliyor.

Tattoo gercek bir kedisever tarafından sahiplenilmeli. Bu kişi kedilerin de duyguları olduğunun, kör de olsalar normal bir yaşam sürebileceklerinin farkında olmalı.

Kör kediler muhteşemdir, üyelerimizden kör kedi sahiplenenlere bir sorun… Ve evinize muhteşem bir can getirin.

Tatoo, the blind kitten..

This is Tattoo… a beautiful 4 week old kitten who wants to run, and play, and be with other cats but he cannot..

Why can’t he?

Because he is blind… and he lives in a cage in an Istanbul veterinarian whilst waiting for a family to adopt him.

Ta ttoo needs to be adopted by a real cat lover. Someone that understands that cats have feelings, and that even if they are blind they can have a great, normal life.

Blind cats are amazing… bring an amazing animal into your home.
