What an incredible dog!!! What a survivor!!!
Other than the shot on the face Lady is fighting two terrible diseases, Erlichia and Anaplasma, transmitted by the ticks that were eating her alive. Her treatment is not over yet and she remains hospitalized.

We have called her Lady. Everyone knew about her in that small village since the moment she appeared, about a month ago, with a bleeding, gaping hole, pieces of flesh hanging alongside her cheeks. Lady has been shot point blank on the face. She has hundreds of small metal pieces all over her skull. Infection did the rest. Her head is literally split into two, right through the bone. 
Her palate has a massive hole, she has been unable to eat for weeks, whatever bits and pieces she managed to find entered her breathing channels and went to the lungs, creating infection and pneumonia. 
She is in Intensive Care, receiving IV fluids. We need to do a surgical clean up of the area, extract whatever metal pieces we can, see how much of her face can be salvaged and start working on reconstructing with whatever we’ve got left… It is heartbreaking.

Update 24 April We have conducted an emergency procedure on Lady. We have cleaned surgically all the area, eliminated all infected and necrotic tissue. Fleas and ticks kept on coming out from INSIDE THE WOUND. We have never seen anything like it… We have also operated her palate, the gunshot made a hole on it… we have closed it very carefully. This will enable her to eat normally once she is recovered. Finally, to ensure delivering nutrients we have installed a feeding tube directly to her stomach… Her condition remains critical but she is experiencing some comfort now… — 
Friday 25 April This is the smile of a dog that has seen death right on the face and said NO! I WONT DIE TODAY!! This is a dog telling all of those that thought she should be euthanized: NO PLEASE!!! I WANT TO LIVE!! Please assist us in our efforts to rebuild what a disgusting killer tried to distroy! Her treatment has just begun, this is going to be quite a journey for Lady.

HELP US REBUILD LADY´S FACE!! For the last five days Lady has been in Intensive Care at our clinic. A feeding tube has been supplying her with nutrients. Her blood levels have been normalized. She has been recovering her strength. She has been fighting pneumonia and infection that threatened the closing of her palate. Today we sedated her in order to procede to a further surgical cleaning and inspect the full extent of the injury. The cartridge emptied on her face penetrated until the base of her skull. It´s truly a miracle that she survived. With infection more or less under control it´s time to rebuild her face. This afternoon we meet with our team of surgeons and we discussed the best procedure to treat this massive injury. Lady is ready to be operated and to have her face rebuilt. Today Lady needs us more than ever. If you have been following her story, please give her a hand towards her ongoing medical treatment… Her treatment has just begun, this is going to be quite a journey for Lady.

UPDATE 30 of MAY…
We knew Lady´s rescue would present an amazing medical challenge… we knew it, and still, we promised her we would save her.
Since rescued Lady has gone through five surgeries… The first one was a first effort to close the hole left in her palate by the shotgun. Then proceeded to close the injury on her face. That operation failed. There was too much infection and stitches came out. This forced us to wait longer and continue fighting infection while making sure she would continue getting food through a feeding tube.
A third operation was needed to further close the palate that kept on opening up… and then a fourth.
Finally, once we can safely say that the palate has been fully closed and healed we tackled the facial injury again. The challenge here was to find a way to reduce the tension so that stitches wouldn´t come up. The gap was too large, it was going to be difficult.
And so… we used an innovative technique that enabled us to dramatically reduce skin tension and is enabling the healing and scarring of the damaged tissue. We believe this technique could be used in many similar injuries, reducing the number of failed surgeries and animal suffering. Please look in detail…

UPDATE 23 of June…
Lady is dead.
If you are reading this you are probably aware of the tragic events surrounding Rockett. Rockett was rescued from India, paralyzed, and he came to us for treatment and rehabilitation.
He was the most beautiful dog.. so full of life… It was love at first sight. From the moment Lady and Rockett met they became inseparable.
But Rockett´s came with a terrible baggage. Upon arrival he was tested against all infectious diseases. He came up negative and in perfect state of health other than his paralysis. It was a false negative. Rockett was carrying distemper that he had been incubating while on India. Shortly after his arrival he fell sick and died just three days after he developed symptoms…
But like in a Greek Tragedy our little fallen hero didn´t die alone. Lady also contracted distemper and started showing symptoms just two days ago. An specially virulent strain of the virus, its progress jumped over two of the diseases known stages, going straight to the neurological phase.
It caught us completely by surprise and no matter how hard we tried the brutal strength of the virus took Lady away from us today.
We are totally devastated by both Lady´s and Rockett´s deaths. Two incredible dogs that had gone to hell and back. Two incredible fighters whose stories moved the hearts of thousands… and now they are both gone.
Words fail me. Last 36 hours have been a marathon against disease and the diabolical strength of a virus that took us completely by surprise.
Maybe one day I will get to write the final letter I wanted to write… but today I can only say: I am sorry Lady. Go find Rockett and be happy forever.
How can someone do something like this! How? How?

Unfortunately this kind of thing is common in Spain.
Abandonned dogs and dogs who don’t perform as seen fit by the owner often are tortured to death, like being set on fire or hanged.
I hope this lovely girl will survive, she looks like a fighter to me.
Further i hope the shooter will go through the same ordeal sometime.

I don’t understand how people can do something like that. It just breaks my heart to see how this could happen. I pray they catch the person who has done this and serve justice. To some people they are just animals, but to pet lovers those animals these people hurt are family. Some pets are children the owners cannot have. I am a dog lover myself and I would find the person who did that and turn them in. That dog is a beautiful dog and should have never been touched in a cruel and heartless way.

You must be an amazingly strong man to see the atrocities certain people inflict on innocent animals and still keep faith in the basic goodness of humankind. Cruel acts like this are so disturbing, I am almost tempted to block these sites. These dogs continue to fight and struggle with everyday life and they would never give up on us so I keep the fight for them.

I’m sorry if I missed this, but there doesn’t seem to be much information about this dog. Where did this happen? Was she a stray? Do you know who shot her and why(I know there is no legitimate reason to shoot a dog, but the guy who shot her may think he has one)? There is no mention of the numerous ticks that are covering her, and it would seem more likely she is a stray or a runaway to be in this condition with so many ticks. I will do what I can to help, I know this group is notorious for performing miracles and giving love to infinity <3 Thank you all so much for what you do!
Hi Mary … We just don’t know… She was living on the streets in the village of cheste, Valencia, Spain and she was shot. The ticks we dint know their story either, they were together. Ticks are gone now, she is on treatment … No one has ap legitima reason to put a gun on a healthy animal eyes and shoot.

Why don’t they take those ticks out..it’s draining her blood..we get the picture on how badly she looks…why do they do that ..for more sympathy..we are animal lovers..and advocates…the hole in her nose was enough to let us all help..including the fact she is blind in one eye…

My stomach is churning after seeing Lady. Once the ticks are removed and Let’s adopt fix her up we will see this gorgeous girl with hope in her eyes again. I donate each month to Let’s Adopt and I will donate next week when I get paid!

You obviously know nothing about Viktor, “Let’s Adopt! Global” or bothered doing research before making the comment, “…don’t know how true this story is…”. Viktor and the people he works with, to save so many lives that would have been lost, are amazing. Thanks to Viktor and his people, along with the dedication and support of the rest of us, these lost souls are saved and moved into loving forever homes. If you do not know about a group, read the previous comments, go to the webpage, find out how many have been saved, before making such a comment. Viktor ALWAYS put the animal first. And just because he did not mention the ticks, good God, even a fool would know to do something about that, you can bet your last dollar, those ticks were one of the very first things removed, after the pup was stabilized enough for their removal.

Here you have a dog, she has been shot on the face, There are photos, live video, there is an Xray showing in all detail the shots on the face. This post is part of a larger blog of a rescue group that has been rescuing similar cases for nearly a decade…
and your comment is those could be photos from the internet? Come on! Contact proper agencies? Who do you want me to contact? the FBI? NASA?
We are a rescue group, this is what we do. Please refrain from making absurd uneducated comments that hurt the lives of the animals we are trying to save.

TO ANONYMOUS – do you think all the supporters are stupid animal lovers. Well think again. I am a retired solicitor, before handing any of my hard earned cash to Charities I fully check them out. So I find your comment inuslting not only to the team of people who rescue these animals but to the thougsands of supporters. I live on the same continent – less than 7 hors from where this poor dog is being treated. If you want to do something useful, either donate or shut up and crawl back inot your corner.
As for LADY, surely someone must know who did this to her, its a small village, why didnt they do something to save her before now. its shameful. Spain is not a third world country why do these villagers and the purpetrator of theis heinous act behave like they are. My family lived in Spain for 18 years (Torreveija), apart from stray cats, we never saw anything like this. I am totally disgusted.
However, I have full confidence in LAG to get this Lady through the hell she has been in and to find a loving home, and if it isnt possible to save her at least she is with people who really care.

Unbelievable.. Spain seems to be a troublesome place for animals with no homes. I am sure this is not the only country who deals with animals in this way. Thank you once again Viktor for your help. As not working I will donate a little again, this week, I wish you and Lady well. I hope she makes it. I am a firm believer in what goes around comes around. So the person who did this, will undoubtedly have something happen to him in the future.
Also to the person who left the messge whoo asked for her to be put down. Viktor is the one who is with the dog he can gauge the situation and gets a feeling from the dog which way to go. It is not up to us to suggest even that. we are not at the site and monitoring this dogs performance. Viktor believes she is a fighter that is good enough for me. It is hard to say something like that when you are not there with the dog.

I have a dog exactly like this. They are so loving. I dont have a lot of money to give. But I will take her and give her a great home. She will never feel this pain again.

Who ever did this to Lady will pay with the consequences from God! Karma will also play a part in this persons life. I want to say something to the person that does not have the guts to show their name. You really need to not comment at all. Victor and his team have saved many many beautiful animals. Even Sherlock which I was heartbroken to hear he had to be put down. The team did everything they could to help him but with his issues he could not be saved. Victor and his team give these animals a second chance at life. They do everything they can do to help them and give them a new home. It is so sad that not only do people do what they did to this poor little lady, but people like you put people like Victor and his team down. If it was not for them these abused and neglected animals would die. It is also so sad that countries treat their animals like this. But I will say this does happen in the US also. I helped save a dog by the name of Buck who also was shot in the face and put in a garbage bag and hung on a fence to die in the cold. He only had a few hours of life left and this wonderful lady saw this bag hanging that was moving. This happened in
TX and many other dogs have been killed there also. She found remains of several dogs after what happened to him. He is blind and has pellets still in him but he is the most beautiful loving dog. She kept him for herself and is traveling all over the place making sure that people are aware of the pain and suffering that these poor animals go through and then they turn around and are the best dogs. She like Victor and his team are angels. So please if you have nothing good to say don’t say anything at all. And yes there is a saying what goes around comes around and bites you in the ass. Victor keep up the great work. Someday when I get my own place I may want another dog. Everyone tells me that want to come back in the next life and be one of my animals. I treat them with love and respect like they deserve. They are there for me when I am happy and very depressed. All I have to do is look at my little one and thank God that he is in my life. He keeps me going.
I can see from the photo that you’ve made a good start with Lady’s lovely face and I’m so glad she is already more comfortable . What a relief it must be for her to have no more terrible fleas and ticks in her wounds . I have lived in Spain and they don’t care much for the concept of pets. My ex kicked my cat and I lost it and dumped his ass and came back to the states.
Look at their much vaulted bullfighting. How much crueler can you get than sticking swords in a bull’s back to make it angry and then teasing it? It’s just barbaric. And they call it culture and say you should be tolerant. Let’s start a culture of sticking swords in the backs of people then and defend it in the name of culture.

Glad to see the surgery is helping. Now all she needs is a bit of ‘plastic’ surgery to fix the hole. My collie lived for 15 years with a broken muzzle on one side after my horse kicked him in the face. The vets decided to let it mend slightly lopsided thant o put him through massive reconstruction. He went to rainbow bridge last year (broke my heart). I know lady will be fine once the hole is closed, at least with her pallet repaired she can eat normally again. On another note: feeding tubes are life savers, take it from me a human – I had one for 2 years after major gastric surgery. So lady when you finally get to taste proper food again it will be like tasting heaven.
I trust the person(s) who did this to Lady SHOULD be treated the same way. It is a pure horror that people of this kind exist. I don’t know of any punishment good enough for him/her or they. What an appalling sight poor little thing and to be reminded and considered they are man’s best friend.
I can never comprehend why some people can be so cruel. I can only take comfort that there are caring people like you that are willing to help such a beautiful creature. If there is any justice, the people who did this to lady will be caught and prosecuted. I have made a donation and hope that Lady is on the mend soon. I wish I lived closer as I would love to give her a loving home.

I am deeply saddened by the fact that there are people in this world who would do this to such a beautiful soul. I feel very deeply connected to her for some reason. As if she were already my dog . LADY REMINDS ME OF STAR = This is the story which really made me aware of the abuse of animals. It occurred in Malta. The dog’s name was Star. The citizens of the country rose up in protest. Below is what happened. In the end, even though the man admitted to what he did, his sentence was suspended. So… it will take laws and education for those in power to understand this is simply not acceptable. I am still haunted by the memory of Star and for some reason Lady reminds me of that story.
2011: Alfred Vella, 44, a farmer from Birzebbuga, Malta this morning admitted in court to having shot the dog Star at his field in Birzebbuga last month. The man was arraigned by the police. He admitted to charges of animal cruelty and illegal hunting. Alfred Vella is liable for a jail term of between three months and a maximum of five years for illegal hunting. In the case of animal cruelty, as a first-time offender, he can only be fined. It was revealed in court that the dog had been buried for 14 hours until it was rescued by animal welfare officers. The accused admitted to the police that he shot the dog using a home-made gun. He first tied up Star, then shot her and buried her. He claimed he shot Star because she was old. She was 10 years old and was called Buttons by a previous owner. The owner had had the dog for 10 years but gave it to Alfred Vella after the dog started shedding fur. Magistrate Edwina Grima turned down a request by defense counsel to order a ban on the publication of the name of the accused because of vulnerable family members. The prosecution, headed by Inspector Ramon Mercieca, objected to the request, asking why the court should protect the same family members who knew about this crime and had not come forward. “Should we be protecting these people?” the prosecutor asked. He also insisted that the prosecution was seeking a jail term for the accused. Defense counsel Peter Paul Zammit said the Court should give a message that it was not after a ‘pound of flesh’ but wanted to see justice done. “We are in the 21st century and justice needs to be done”. The prosecution said that in the 21st century, such barbaric acts are not supposed to happen. Judgment will be delivered this afternoon.
2013: Alfred Vella, 45 of Birzebbuga, who had been convicted of killing the dog popularly known as Star has had an effective three-month jail term converted into a three-month jail term suspended for two years. A €10,000 fine was reduced to €9,000. The decision was taken by the Court of Appeals. In the original case, Mr. Vella admitted to charges of animal cruelty, manufacturing a home-made gun and being in possession of stuffed, illegally hunted birds. Both the Attorney General and Mr. Vella had appealed. Mr. Justice Lawrence Quintano dismissed both appeals and said that after he took into consideration the early admission by Mr. Vella and his ‘clean’ police record, he was converting Mr. Vella’s effective jail term into a suspended one. Mr. Vella was also suspended from hunting for two years from today. The tragic story of Star hit the international headlines after she was discovered almost totally buried near Għar Ħasan by Animal Welfare Department officers on May 19, 2011. Whimpering, she poked her nose through the soil of the grave, which managed to save her life. However, she died on June 6 from an acute inflammation of the pancreas, barely 24 hours after hundreds rallied in a protest against animal cruelty sparked by her story. During Mr. Vella’s arraignment in 2011, Police Inspector Ramon Mercieca said Mr. Vella had shot the dog using a homemade gun built for illegal hunting. He told them that he had first tied up the dog because the gun couldn’t quite fire immediately and accuracy was an issue. He then shot her and buried her. He also told them that she had been in the grave for some 14 hours before being discovered.

Are you really so blind that you can’t see that for yourself and what good, kind people these are who are helping to save these animals? As for Viktor and his crew, thank you SO much for all you do for these needy animals and I’m so happy to see Lady looking so amazingly well after her surgeries. She looks incredible ! ! Whoever adopts her will be very lucky indeed to be able to give her a home and have her be a part of their family! She’s an amazing dog. 🙂

But we and the animals deserve no less than for the person who did this to remain behind bars till they die.
No one can guarantee they will not do it again and statistics are very clear that humans who can do this to animals can do it to humans.

Happy endings are the best, but the horrors to the happy endings are what piss me off. Then there are the horrors that do not have happy endings. I will never understand individuals, how they were raised, where they were raised, and what they were taught as far as morals. People like you daily restore my faith in humanity, where creatures like those, who did this to Lady try to destroy it. As long as there are caring souls and so many wonderful people supporting, the war is not lost.
I adopted a shelter dog last year and pay monthly food costs for an abused stray dog in Thailand in a private rescue, who escaped while they tried to skin him alive. Wonderful people there got him medical treatment and give him a forever home and knowing he is getting better every day, makes me happy.
I sincerely hope that Lady will find a place with love and care after her recovery. She is such a strong girl and wants to live, thank you for all you are doing for her and others seeking your help.

Whoever is responsible for this insane and severely Cruel act needs to be taken into prison and left to rot forever. There is ZERO excuse for this and none should be accepted either, only a guilty verdict and off to prison. I donated for lady…minimal but the best that I could do at this time….I was reading comments and Rob said unfortunately this is common in spain…well…tell me why they don’t have some sort of interview process for people to have dogs over there??…there’s gotta be a better way for these animals all over the world…it’s horrible the way people treat what are supposed to be “mans best friend”….it’s just not fair!!….I wish that I was a multi-millionaire, I’d take all the animals that needed a place to live, and be loved……praying for these pets!

I live in a very small town in southern Arizona, and we would love, and be willing to give that sweet girl a home. We luve on 5 acres, and have a large yard. We have 4 fur sweet dogs, spoiled rotten, and would open our home to another in need. IT BREAKS MY HEART, and I find it extremely hard to understand how anyone could ever do such a thing. Our animals are like kids. I believe that there is a special place in hell for anyone who could hurt a child or animal. This honesty brought a tear to my eyes. God bless you guys for being a rescue to these helpless souls!

Viktor – you are an amazing and strong man. You see such suffering close up, every day, and yet you remain calm and a gentleman, even to the creeps who try to convince the world that you are not doing good.

Dear Victor , and all the wonderful team at LAG , I am desperately sorry that after all this , all your love and great efforts that you have showered on these 2 wonderful animals , they have both been taken from you . I did say before that I hoped in their beautiful friendship that they could be together for always , and now they certainly are , for as Chief Seattle said , ” Death , there is no death , but only a change of worlds ” and Rockett and his darling Lady are now for ever inseperable . I don’t know if you have a grave yard , but if so I am sure you have placed them side by side . Rockett and Lady both had about them the same indefinable look of wisdom and spirituality. You enriched their lives and they have enriched yours and that of all your wonderful followers , including me .

Oh, Viktor! How sad and broken you must feel right now. I am in tears and I never got to see the amazing strength each of these dogs displayed in person. Know that I, and your other supporters share some part of your pain. Know also that we realize that the types of rescues you do are fraught with danger and risk. Sometimes you can do everything right and still have it all go wrong. An example, my only child was killed by his sitter’s husband while I was working. I did all I could to find a safe place for him, but it did not work out. It has been 27 years, I still grieve, but I still find hope and love in this world. You have the biggest, most generous heart and I admire and respect you. I send you long-distance hugs from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
When I saw Lady’s story I was heart broken. That something like this could happen to any animal.
I remembered my dog that I never got to say goodbye to. I wish I could have held and comforted lady and see her healthy and well.

Like so many people I am crying and wishing that Lady and Rockett were still her so they could find out what a truly loving home is really like~ I guess the only positive thing out of this is that you gave them a chance at life that they would not have had and now I know they are not in any pain anymore. I had donated when she was first brought to you guys and i had such a hard time finding the link for her to see how she was doing. I found this today. It has broken my heart and I know that you did all that you could to help her heal from the wounds. I do have one question…..was she not vaccinated while in your care? I find that very weird if she wasnt.
Cassie.. she wasn´t, but there is an explanation for that. She came from the streets as an adult. Also, she was severely injured and had multiple surgeries. You can´t vaccinate a dog that is battling infection and is going through surgeries…
Distemper was a 1 in a million possibility, and it only happened when Rockett came from India, without symptoms.

First of all, Hans DeBartolo is a jerk. Secondly, this is one of the most heartbreaking stories I have read. But all the work you did and love you did forgave to Lady was a great thing, and her last days on earth were filled with love. If it wasn’t for you, she would have died miserable. Rockett also received the love he deserved from you. They are both together now, free from pain and never having to be hurt again by rotten people who have no heart, like Hans. Thank you so much.

So sad to read that after such a huge fight to health and such wonderful care by such wonderful compassionate humans that both Lady and Rockett should succume to a virus like distemper. I remember first seeing the story of Lady and wondering what sort of human could do such a thing. But these “people” are not proper humans. Those that show compassion to animals, those that don’t eat animals and those that care about the planet are proper humans. I feel deeply saddened for all those who helped this beautiful and kind animal and wish to convey my sincerest condolences and also thanks for the kindness you have all shown. May Lady and Rockett Rest In Peace together and play in the land of Light with those special friends of us all who have also passed on.
OMG, I am so sad to read this! I found out about Lady only yesterday, and I didn’t know about Rockett at all. I was hoping for a good recovery for Lady. She and Rockett are at the Rainbow Bridge together now, and someday, a long time from now, a lucky person from LAG will be greeted by both of them, to be together forever. Lady and Rockett will think that they had to wait only a few minutes, though, because time passes differently at the RB than it does on earth.
