THE BEGINNING | May 2021

A homeless stray, Martin was found one evening unable to walk, stumbling and falling around in a state of total confusion. He was rushed to a vet clinic and was hospitalized with difficulty breathing, bloody discharge from the nose, head wounds, oedema of both eyes and a dislocated lower jaw. The vets suspect these injuries were cased by a car. Marty was started on a recovery protocol and a cerclage wire was inserted to temporarily stabilize his jaw.

The initial examination also revealed that the right side of Martin’s face is paralyzed, and X-rays uncovered the reason — there were bullet fragments in his head.

Marty was not only run over, he was also shot.

At this point, his rescuers reached the end of their abilities, and asked for our help.

While we were trying to evaluate our readiness to take on a new case, Martin’s rescuer messaged us that coming home after work, she had found him with a mouth full of blood as his tongue had caught on the cerclage wire and had torn. In addition, one of his swollen eyes had ruptured and the eyeball was leaking out.

We realized we had no other choice but to take Martin’s case on.

Martin is now in our clinic; we will share new photos as soon as our volunteers manage to get some. Martin will need surgery for proper stabilization of the jaw and enucleation of the ruptured eye. He also will require a CT scan and a consultation with a neurologist to evaluate the paralysis of his face. He is currently unable to eat on his own and his rescuers had been feeding him with a syringe. After we tackle these challenges, Marty will also need an examination by an ophthalmologist so we can find out whether he has some vision in the left eye or is completely blind.

Marty is a sweet, calm and gentle boy. Despite all the pain he has experienced, he asks for cuddles and welcomes contact with human hands.
