Herşeyi değiştirmeye çalışırız.
Statükonun bizi rahatsız eden bir parçasını bulduk, iyileştirilmesi gereken, değişmek için sabırsızlanan bir şey, ve onu değiştirdik.
Biz büyük, kalıcı ve önemli bir değişiklik yapmaya çalışıyoruz.
Nihai hedefimiz Türkiye’de hayvanlara gösterilen davranışları iyileştirmek. Biz, bir barınağa hapsedilmek ya da bir belediye tarafından uzak bir ormana atılmak yerine her köpeğin ve her kedinin sahiplenileceği bir ülke yaratmak istiyoruz.

Sahip Çıkalım topluma ulaştı ve hayvanları umursayan, daha önce barınaklarla ilişkisi olmamış, tutkulu insanlarla bağlantı kurdu. İlerleme büyük bir hızla gerçekleşiyor. Hedefimiz toplumu tamamen değiştirmek.
Bir fikir yaratmak, bir fikri yaymak basit bir iş değil.

Biz değişikliği simgeliyoruz. Öncekinden sonrakine. Zamanda, fikirlerin yaratıldığı ve farklı şekilde uygulandığı bir anı yaşıyoruz.
Biz önderliğe inanıyoruz. Değişiklik yapma tarzımız bir sistemi etkilemek için para ya da güç kullanmak değil, önderlik etmek.
Biz bir kabile yarattık.

Sahip Çıkalım, önderlik etmekle ve insanları bir fikre bağlamak, kendi kabilemizi yaratmakla ilgili.
Kabileler dünyamızı değiştirebilir, kabileler politikaları değiştirebilir, sayısız insanı, onları yapmak istemedikleri bir şeyi yapmaya zorladığınız için değil, onlar bağlantı kurmak istedikleri için bir araya getirebilir.
Sahip Çıkalım değiştirilmeye değer bir şey buldu, bir kabile topladık, bir fikri yaydık, ve bizden çok daha büyük bir şey, bir hareket oluştu.
Sahip Çıkalım sadece bir organizasyon değildir, bir harekettir.

Sahip Çıkalım’da ülkenin her tarafında hayvanlar için çalışmaya ve fikirlerimizi yaymaya istekli binlerce insan var.

Milyonlarca insana değil, fikirlerimizi tekrar tekrar yaymayı üstlenecek kadar onları önemseyecek sadece bin kişiye ihtiyacımız vardı.

Sahip Çıkalım bir kitlesel hareket değil, onunla hiç ilgisi yok. Biz gerçekten inananları bulmaya çalışıyoruz. Nitelik istiyoruz, nicelik değil.
Hayvan severleri biz icat etmedik. Biz sadece onlara önderlik etmeye karar verdik.

Bir buçuk yıl önce, zaten bu arzuya sahip, ama birbiriyle bağlantısız bir grup oluşturduk. Biz sadece insanları organize ettik ve bir hareket yarattık.

Biz aykırı inançlara sahibiz. Biz saldırganız. Statükoya baktık, abartılmış hayvan istifçileri tarafından yönetilen hayvan barınaklarına baktık, ve bu devam edemez dedik. Bu statükoya katlanamayız. Beğenmiyoruz. Ayağa kalkıp durumu zorlamaya, ileri götürmeye istekli idik. Başımızı eğmek, bunun işe yaramayacağını söyleyenlere inanmak yerine herşeyi farklı organize ettik. Üyelerimiz statükoya baktılar, anlamsız olduğunu gördüler, ve bağlantı kurmayı ne kadar istediklerini farkettiler. Bunu tek başımıza yapamayacağımızı anladık, ama başkalarının da bize katılmasını sağlarsak hep beraber inanılmaz sonuçlar elde edebilecektik.
Dinlemek isteyen insanlara bir öykü anlattık. Şiddetle birbiriyle bağlantı kurmak istiyen insanlardan bir kabile oluşturduk. Biz bir harekete önderlik ediyoruz, ve değişiklikler yapıyoruz.

İnsanları rahatsız etmemiz gerekiyordu. Neden? Çünkü eğer kimseyi rahatsız etmiyorsanız statükoyu değiştirmiyorsunuz. Çoğumuz bizim gibi insanlarla bağlantı kurmak istediğimiz için bağlantılar yaratıyoruz. Biz önderlik yapıyoruz. Değişiklikler önderliğe odaklanarak gerçekleştirilebilir.
Ayrı ayrı çalışarak grubun büyümesini ve fikirlerimizin yayılmasını sağlayacak, güçlenmemiz için zamanlarını ve becerilerini hibe edecek üyelerden bir çalışma grubu oluşturduk.
Niye hayvanlara yardım etmeyi seçtik? Çünkü bu bizim için önemli. Etrafımızdaki insanların bu bağlantıya, önderliğe ihtiyaçları vardı, onlar için bir fark yarattı.

Önderlik etmek için insanlardan izin almak gerekmez. İnsanlar buradan sonra nereye gideceklerinin gösterilmesini bekliyorlardı.

Sahip Çıkalım statükoya meydan okudu. Eşsiz bir kültür oluşturduk. İnsanlar arasında bağlantı kurduk. Ve son bir şey daha yaptık, bağlılık sözü verdik. Davaya bağlandık, kabileye bağlandık, insanlarımıza bağlandık, hayvanlara bağlandık.

Benim için bir şey yapmanızı isiyorum. Yapmanızı istediğim şey hareketimizi yaymak için etrafınızdaki herkese bizden bahsetmeniz, bir arada hareket ederek Türkiye’deki bütün hayvanların yaşamını iyileştirebileceğimiz fikrini yaymanız.

What do we do at Lets Adopt?

We try to change everything.
We found a piece of the status quo, something that bothered us, something that needed to be improved something that was itching to be changed, and we changed it.
We try to make big, permanent, important change.
Our final aim is to improve the treatment of animals in Turkey. We want to create a country where every dog and cat will be adopted instead of being locked up in some shelter or drop in some far away forest by a municipality
Lets Adopt has gone to the community and connected with people who care about animals, people not previously involved in animal shelters, people with passion. Progress is made at a fast rate.Our aim is to completely transform the community.

Creating an idea, spreading an idea is not a simple task.
We signify change. From before to after. We are living a moment in time when ideas are created and implemented differently.
We believe in Leadership.  The way we make change is not by using money or power to influence a system but by leading.
We have created a tribe.

Lets Adopt Its about leading and connecting people with an idea, creating our own tribe.
Tribes can change our world, tribes can change politics, align numbers of people not because you force them to to do something against their will but because they wanted to connect.
Lets Adopt found something worth changing and we assembled a tribe that spread an idea that became something far bigger than ourselves, creating a movement.
Lets Adopt is not just an organization, it’s a movement.

Lets Adopt has thousands of people around the country willing to work on behalf of animals and spread our ideas.
We didnt need millions of people..we only needed a thousand people who cared enough to spread the idea time and again.
Lets Adopt is not a mass movement, that is not what it’s about. What we are trying to do is finding the true believers. We want quality, not quantity.
We have not invented animal lovers. We merely decided to lead them. One and a half years ago we funded a group that was disconnected but who already had a yearning. We just organized people and created a movement.

We are heretics. We are transgressors. We looked at the status quo, we looked at the animal shelters run by glorified animal hoarders and said: this cannot continue. We can’t abide this status quo. We dont like it. We were willing to stand up and move things forward. Instead of  keeping our head down, instead of believing those who told us this wouldn’t work we organized things differently. Our members looked at the status quo, they could see it made no sense and realized how much they wanted to be connected. We could see we could not do this by ourselves, but if we could get other people to join us then together we could all achieve amazing results.
We told a story to people who wanted to hear it. We connected a tribe of people who were desperate to be connected to each other. We lead a movement and make changes.

We needed to upset people. Why?  Because If you are not upsetting anyone you are not changing the status quo. We build connections, realizing that most of us needed to connect with people like us. We lead. By focusing on leading is where change comes.
We created a working group with members that would work individually to make the group grow and spread our ideas, members that would donate their time and skills to make us stronger.
Why did we choose to help animals? Because its important to us. The people that surround us needed the connection, needed the leadership, it made a difference to them.
We didn’t need permission from people to lead them. People were waiting to be shown were to go next.
Lets Adopt has challenged the status quo. We have built a unique culture. We connected people to one another. And we did one last thing.. we committed. We committed to the cause, we committed to the tribe, we committed to our people, we committed to the animals.

I want to ask you to do something for me. What I want you to do is to enlarge our movement, to talk to everyone around you about us, to spread the idea that we can improve the life of all animals in Turkey by acting together.

Sahip Çıkalım bugün Dr. İlhan Gökhol ve eşi Özlem’le bir toplantı yaptı. Ebru meselesini konuştuk ve konu üzerinde kendi tutumlarımızı karşılaştırdık.

7 Haziran tarihli yazımızda Dr. İlhan Gökhol’un Ebru hakkındaki ilk ifadesini değiştirdiğini yazmıştık.

Bizim ifademizin yanlış olduğu çıktı ortaya. Gerçek, Dr. İlhan Gökhol’un en baştan beri Ebru’nun ölüm nedeninin akut travma olduğunu açıklayan bir ifade vermiş olduğu. Yaşlılık hiç söz konusu değildi.

Bu noktada Dr. Gökhol’a, eşi Özleme ve Animalia Kliniği çalışanlara, bu yanlış bildirimiz için içten bir özür borçluyuz.

Bu baştan beri savunduğumuz, “yaşlılık” açıklamasının trajik olayı örtbas etmek için Marmara otelinin Halkla İlişkiler Ekibinin bir uydurması olduğu ifademizi destekliyor. The Marmara, Ebru’nun doğal nedenlerle, yaşlılıktan öldüğünü açıklayan bir basın bülteni yayınladı. Basın onlara inandı, birçok okuyucu da onlara inandı, ve kızgınlıkla Sahip Çıkalım’a yönelip bizi yalancılıkla suçladılar.

Otelin Genel Müdürü, bir köşe yazarı olan Ayşe Arman’a grubun Avrupa Birliği’nden ödenek almaya çalıştığını iddia edecek kadar ileri gitti, ve bu saçma iddiaya birçok zayıf mantıklı insan inandı.

Baştan itibaren Sahip Çıkalım The Marmara’nın Ebru’ya yıllarca bakmış olmasını alkışlamıştır. Ancak şimdi onun ölümünü ele alış şekillerine ve onun anısına sürdükleri lekeye sert tepkimizi dile getirmek bizim görevimizdir.

Sahip Çıkalım The Marmara Oteli’ nden bu blog vasıtasıyla olayı kötü ele alış şekilleri ile ilgili yazılı bir özür talep etmektedir, ve bu kötü durumdan sorumlu olan kişilerin, yani Otel Genel Müdürü’nün ve Halkla İlişkiler Ekibinden sorumlu “uydurma uzmanının” en kısa zamanda değiştirilmelerini saygıyla önerir.

The Marmara Otelinin Genel Müdürüne ulaşmak için sarf ettiğimiz bütün çabalar sonuçsuz kaldı.

Lets Adopt had a meeting with Dr. Ilhan Gökgöl and his wife Ozlem
today. We discussed the Ebru case and compared positions on the issue.

In our post of the 7th of June we wrote that Dr. Ilhan Gökgöl had
changed his initial statement about Ebru’s death.

It turned out our statement was incorrect. The truth is that Dr. Ilhan
issued a medical report stating from the very beginning that the Cause
of Death was acute trauma. Old age was never a cause.

At this point we must sincerely apologize to Dr. Gökgöl, his wife Ozlem
and to the staff of the Animalia Clinic for our inaccurate reporting.

This confirms what we always maintained, the “old age” explanation was
fabricated by the PR Team of the Marmara hotel in a desperate effort
to cover up the tragic event. The Marmara proceeded to issue a Press
Release explaining that Ebru died of natural causes, of old age. The
Press believed them and so did many readers who turned in anger
against Lets Adopt and accused us of lying.

The General Manager of the Hotel went as far as suggesting to Ayse
Arman, a columnist, that the group was trying to apply for European
Union funding, a ridiculous suggestion that again, many weak minds
believed.

From the beginning Lets Adopt applauded the way the Marmara had taken
care of Ebru for years. It is our obligation now to express our stern
rejection for the way they handled her passing and the stain they have
left in her memory.

From this blog Lets Adopt demands a written apology from the Marmara
Hotel for its mishandling of the situation and respectfully suggests
that the people responsible for this mess, namely, the Hotel General
Manager and the “spin doctor” responsible of the PR Team, be replaced
at once.

All our efforts to contact the GM of the Marmara Hotel remain unsuccessful.

Song for Ebru

Dear Friends,

Ebru continues to inspire and the debate has not ended. Animal cruelty is a major issue that requires attention.

Over the coming weeks Let’s Adopt! will be unveiling a set of initiatives in order to raise awareness against animal cruelty in the country.

Here is the first. Our friend Maria Daines has written and performed a song inspired on Ebru‘s story. An emotive Rock Ballad retrospect titled Ebru and how she impacted the lives of so many people who directly or indirectly got to know her.

Ebru Lives On

Ebru için Çiçekler: Gerçek Ortaya Çıkar

Bazı gerçekler o kadar çıplaktır ki, insanlar onlara acır ve biraz da olsa üstlerini örtmeye çalışır.

Beklendiği gibi, Animalia Kliniği’nden Dr. İlhan Gökgöl, nihayet ifadesini değiştirdi.

Basına geçen Cuma verdiği bir açıklamada, İlhan Bey Marmara’nın köpeği Ebru’nun Akut (Ağır) Travma’dan öldüğünü kabul etti.

Ebru yaşlılıktan ÖLMEDİ.

Ardından İlhan Bey, bir hafta önce Sahip Çıkalım tarafından açıklanan, korunmasız bir hayvana bir veya daha fazla kişi tarafından yapılan bir saldırının profiline tıpatıp uyan bir resmi tamamlamak üzere yaralanmaların ayrıntılı bir tarifini verdi.

Biz tesadüflere inanmayız. Bir binanın içine girmesine izin verilmeyen sokak köpeği Ebru’nun yüksek bir yerden düşmüş olabilmesi ihtimali yok denecek kadar azdır. Yaralanmaların şekli araba çarpması sonucu oluşabilecek yaralanmalara uymuyor. Yaralanmanın zamanı önemli değil.

Öte yandan, Marmara Oteli Ebru’nun yaşlılıktan öldüğünde ısrar ediyor.

Halkla İlişkiler felaketleri açısındanbu kolay unutulacak gibi değil. Halkla İlişkiler örtbası nadiren işe yarar, ve toplu iletişimin parmağımızın ucunda olduğu bir toplumda hiç yaramaz. Kötü Halkla İlişkiler, ne kadar çok olursa olsun, gerçeği saklayamaz. Gerçek her zaman kazanır

Dün saygın bir köşe yazarı Ebru’nun katilini bulmak için koyduğumuz USD 2,000 ödülü köpeğe Taksim Meydanında bir anıt dikmek için kullanmamızı önerdi, ve çok kimse bu fikri uygun buluyor. Sahip Çıkalım iki nedenle bu gibi planlara katılmamaktadır:
a) Biz bu işi yapan kişi veya kişilerin oralarda bir yerde olduğuna, ve yakında bulunacaklarına inanıyoruz.

b) Eğitim parayı harcamak için çok daha iyi bir yoldur.

Yarın, 8 Haziran Pazartesi günü, Sahip Çıkalım Marmara Oteli’nin sahipleri ve Animalia Veteriner Kliniği’nden Veteriner İlhan Gökgöl’e ulaşıp onları Türkiye’de Hayvanlara Kötü Muameleye karşı ülke çapındaki bir farkındalık kampanyasının ön saflarında olmaya davet edecek.

Bir hatayı kabul etmekte küçük düşürücü hiçbir şey yoktur. Marmara Oteli hiçbir şekilde Ebru’nun ölümünden sorumlu değildir, ama bu konudaki duruşunu en kısa zamanda değiştirmelidir. Bunu yapmaları bir zayıflık olarak algılanmayacaktır. Tam tersine, Ebru’nun ölümünün gerçek nedenleri konusunda nihayet aydınlatılmış olan halk bunu olumlu bir gelişme olarak görecektir. Şimdiye kadar gösterilen ilgiye bakılırsa, hem basılı hem de internet tabanlı medya da bunu olumlu bir ışıkta algılayacaktır.

Viktor Larkhill’in Sahip Çıkalım’ı medya tarafından ancak bir aptalın inanacağı akılalmaz yalanlarla suçlanmıştır. Hayvan ticareti, hayvan katliamı, hayvan kaçakçılığı… Hatta Marmara Otelinin müdürü tarafından köşe yazarı Ayşe Arman vasıtasıyla açıkça Avrupa Birliğinden milyonlarca Euro elde edebilmek için bir tiyatro sergilemekle bile suçlandık. Ayşe Arman’a cevabımız şuydu: SİZ buna gerçekten inanıyor musunuz? Maskeli bir adam tarafından yönetilen AB sponsorluğunda bir Facebook grubu… SİZ buna gerçekten inanıyor musunuz?

Flowers for Ebru: Truth Prevails

Most truths are so naked that people feel sorry for them and cover them up, at least a little bit.

As expected, Dr. Ilhan Gökgöl, of Animalia Clinic has finally changed in tune.

In a statement issued to the Press last Friday Mr. Ilhan finally conceded that Ebru, the dog of the Marmara died of Acute (Severe) Trauma.

Ebru did NOT die of old age.

Mr. Ilhan then proceeds to give a detailed description of the injuries, to complete a picture that, as announced by Sahip Cikalim already a week ago, fits perfectly the profile of an attack by one or more people on a helpless animal.

We don’t believe in coincidences. The chances that Ebru, a stray dog that was never allowed inside a building could have fallen from a high place are absolutely negligible. The nature of the injuries do not correspond with the nature of the injuries sustained on a car crash. The timing of the injury is irrelevant.

On the other side, the Marmara Hotel, continues maintaining that Ebru died of old age.

As PR disaster goes this is one of those that wont be forgotten easily. PR Spin seldom works and even less so in a society where mass communications are at the reach of our fingertips. No amount of bad PR can hide the truth.

Truth always prevails.

Yesterday a prestigious columnist suggested that Lets Adopt uses the USD 2000 reward offered to find Ebrus killer to build a statue to the dog in Taksim Square, an idea that is being currently considered by many.

Lets Adopt wont be involved in such plans for two reasons:

a) We are convinced the person or persons who did this are out there and will soon be brought to light.

b) Education is a much better way to spend the money.

Tomorrow Monday the 8th of June Lets Adopt will reach out to the owners of the Marmara Hotel and to the Veterinarian Ilhan Gökgöl from Animalia Veterinary clinic and invite them to be at the forefront of a nation-wide awareness campaign of awareness against Animal Abuse in Turkey.

There is nothing humiliating about admitting a mistake. The Marmara Hotel is in no way responsible for Ebru’s death, but it must quickly reverse its stance on this issue. Doing so would not be perceived as an act of weakness, on the contrary, the general public who has now been finally enlightened about the real causes of Ebru’s death, would perceive this in a positive manner. Judging by the interest shown so far, Media, both printed and internet-based, would also look at this in a good light.

Viktor Larkhill’s Lets Adopt was publicly accused by the media of a number of outrageous falsehoods that only a fool would believe. Animal trading, animal slaugthering, animal smuggling. We were even publicly accused by the Manager of the Marmara Hotel by way of Ayse Arman, the newspaper columnist of orchestrating a charade in order to  seek millions of Euros from the European Union. Our reply to Mrs. Arman was: Do YOU really believe that? A EU sponsored Facebook group run by a guy with a mask… Do YOU really believe that?

Truth Prevails

Sevgili arkadaşlar,

Ebru’nun ölümünün ardından yaşadığımız karmaşa beklenen bir şeydi. Bu olayların normal gelişmesi, şaşkınlık, şok, kızgınlık, inkar, kabul etme ve sonunda da bazı şeylerin değişmesi, ve bu değişikliklere birey olarak bizlerin önayak olması gerektiğini farketmek.

Ebru’yu kimin öldürdüğünü bilmiyoruz, ama büyük bir travma sonucu öldüğünü biliyoruz. Bir gün bunu kimin yaptığını öğreneceğimizi umuyoruz. Ben bundan eminim.

Şimdi daha büyük resme bakmalıyız.

Ebru Marmara Oteli’nin koruması sayesinde uzun bir yaşam elde eden şanslı bir köpekti. Her sokak köpeği bu kadar şanslı olmuyor. Aslında çok azı öyle. Sokaktaki bir köpeğin ömrü 4-5 yılı geçmiyor, ve bu süre sürekli kötü muamelenin izlerini taşıyor. Bundan söz etmemem gerekirdi, ama edeceğim. Tekmelenerek öldürülen, işkence gören, yakılan, zincirlenen, küçücük yerlere kapatılan, bıçaklanan hayvanların sayısı inanılır gibi değil. Ülkenin her yanındaki hayvan sağlığı organizasyonları bu gibi olaylarla her gün karşılaşıyor. Bunu biliyoruz. Ancak kısıtlı zekaya sahip biri (ne yazık ki onlardan da çokça var) bunu inkar eder.

Bu olaylara sokaklarda kaybolmuş halde dolaşan onbinlerce terkedilmiş hayvanı da katmalıyız.

Bu sorun sadece Türkiye’nin sorunu değil. Özellikle Yunanistan, İtalya veya İspanya gibi Akdeniz ülkelerinde durum kötü.

Ancak biz Türkiye’ye odaklanacağız. Neden mi? Çünkü bu bizim ülkemiz, ve her birimizin kalıcı bazı değişiklikler yapabileceğimiz yer burası.

Ebru’nun trajik ölümü, ne kadar üzücü olursa olsun, bir amaca hizmet etmeli. Onun zamansız ölümü üzerine yükselen sesler kanunlardaki, ve daha da önemlisi, kanunların uygulanış şeklindeki değişiklikler olarak yansımalı.

Sahip Çıkalım organizasyon bünyesinde sadece hayvanlara uygulanan kötü muamelelerin saptanıp açıklanmasına adanmış bir bölüm oluşturacaktır. Biz yargılamayacağız, o işi yargıya bırakacağız. Ama bu gibi durumları ışığa çıkaracağız ve onları sonuna kadar ilan edeceğiz.

Bu seferberliğimizde bize yardımcı olacak gönüllülere ihtiyacımız var. Avukatlara, fotoğrafçılara, ve genelde etraflarında bu zulmü görmekten bıkmış ve bir şeyler yapabilmek isteyen insanlara ihtiyacımız var.

Özellikle üç durumu hedefleyeceğiz:

- Aşırı hayvan ihmali durumları

- Köpek dövüştüren organizasyonlar

- Hayvanların terk edilmesi.

Aynı zamanda:

- Hem barınaklarda, hem de özel evlerde hayvanlara kötü muamele / hayvan biriktirme olaylarıyla da ilgileneceğiz.

Animal abuse: Time for change

Dear friends,

The turmoil we are witnessing in the aftermath of Ebru’s death was expected. Its the usual succession of events, surprise, shock, anger, denial, acceptance and in the end the realization that some things have to change and that those changes must be led by us as individuals.

We don’t know who killed Ebru, but we know she died because of massive trauma. We hope one day we will find out who did it. I’m sure we will.

We must now look at the bigger picture.

Ebru was a lucky dog who enjoyed a long life because of the protection or the Marmara Hotel. Not every stray dog is as lucky. As a matter of fact very few are. The average life of a dog in the streets its no more than four to five years, and those years are marked by constant abuse. I shouldn’t go into it but I will. The amounts of animals being kicked to death, tortured, burned, chained, confined, knifed, is staggering. Animal welfare organizations across the country deal with those cases on a daily basis. We know that. Only a oerson of limited intelligence  would deny it (there are plenty of those amongst us infortunately).
To those cases we must add the tens of thousands of abandoned animals that we find wandering losts on the streets regularly.

This problem is not Turkey’s alone. It is specially bad in Mediterranean countries like Greece, Italy or Spain.

We are, however going to focus our attention in Turkey. Why? Because this is our nation and because here is where, each one of us, can make lasting changes.

The tragic death of Ebru, sad as it is, must serve a purpose. The outcry created by her untimely death must translate on changes in the law, and most importantly on the way the law is applied.

Let’s Adopt will create a separate section within its organization solely dedicated to exposing and uncovering cases of animal abuse. Our purpose won’t be to judge, well leave the judicial powers to that. But we will be bringing to light such cases and publicise them to the full extent.

We will require volonteers to join us in this quest. We will need lawyers, photographers and in general people who are tired of seeing such cruelty around and would want to do something.

We will target four cases specially:

- Extreme cases of animal neglect

- Dog fighting organizations

- Animal abandon.

- Abuse in shelters/animal hoarding

Dear friends…

Over the last year we have been focussing our efforts on three basic areas:

Rehoming
Education
Exposing the animal massacres in Istanbul and other municipalities

Those who have been working with us since our inception last year know exactly what we do and how we do it.

Last week we undertook our first fundraising effort, to cover the multiple operations of Felix the cat. We were pleased to report this was a great success…

Normally we encourage our members to take responsibility for their own rescues and, if possible, we assist them in their rehoming efforts, but yesterday we received an email that will be taking us to a whole new level of engagement.

One of our members, Huma, paid a visit last weekend to the infamous Hasdal Municipality Shelter in Kemerburgaz. What she witnessed there left her in a state of shock. A couple of dozen puppies, most of them affected by distemper and other diseases, were struggling to keep standing under wind and the rain. On her way home she cried tears of impotence at the callousness and cruelty of the shelter employees who were treating the pups like garbage..

The next morning she woke up early and drove back to the Hasdal shelter. She then proceeded to go around the cages selecting those puppies who were in worst condition, a total of 13 pups.

Thirteen Lives.

Some of you are rescuers. Some of you have been courageous and generous enough to rescue a dog from near death, nurse him back to health and adopt him. Others have found him a loving family. But I’m 100 % sure none of you has rescued Thirteen Lives in an instant. Our friend did. It was done in an impulse.

She loaded the thirteen pups in her car and took them to her vet. Only that evening it dawned on her the enormity of her action and the difficulties she would have to deal with until the pups are healthy and placed in a loving home. At that point she wrote to Let’s Adopt.

Upon reading her letter our first reaction was one of shock and disbelief. This was a mission far too large for us to handle. So, initially we sent her a polite reply offering our help with rehoming at a later stage. She kindly thanked us for our offer.

The following hours we could not stop thinking about Huma and her thirteen puppies. How will she handle this? She is a student and her finances are tight. Those pups are going to require medical attention for the coming weeks, Huma will then have to find them foster or final homes and this won’t be easy.
You cannot imagine how difficult it is to find good homes for mix breed dogs in Turkey. It really is a nearly impossible task. We are terribly sorry to have to say this but this country is not ready yet. Too many people consider dogs a status symbol and to them a stray is not a dog, its a nuisance. In the best of cases the dog will be tolerated, in the worst shot, poisoned, tortured… We have seen it all.
At first, her close circle of family and friends will try to help but this help won’t last for long.

So… we wrote Huma and offered our help and support..

This is what we are going to do:

1. The pups are in desperate need of medical attention. Right now they are at a veterinary clinic in Istanbul. We need to raise funds to cover part or most of those expenses. As we were in the case of Felix, we are confident we will be able to count on the generosity of our members. Any donation, large of small will help. For those who live abroad we are in the process of setting up a system to handle international donations. Please contact us and we’ll explain you how. Needless to say you will be kept informed on constant basis about the evolution of the pups.

2. As the pups’ health improve, we are going to need foster and final families for them. We are going to need both, urgently. Once again we are asking for your help here. This is our largest project to date. We have rehomed hundreds of animals but always on an individual basis… This is a whole new level.

Update February 19

It has been 4 days since Huma rescued the 13 sick puppies from Hasdal. She did pick up the sickest ones of the tens of puppies agonizing at that killing station run by the Istanbul Municipality. The battle has been fierce and whilst some are progressively improving 7 of them gave up and crossed the Heaven’s Gates. Huma named them all so that she can call them and find them when the time comes… We are now trying to keep our last six from slipping away.

Dear friends,

Quick note to inform you that due to basic disagreements with the veterinary that has handled the 13 pups Let’s Adopt won’t be involved in this operation any longer.

10 out of the 13 pups died. This was a very difficult mission from the beginning and we praised the rescuer to no end, but we believe there has been clear negligence in the puppy’s veterinary care.

Needless to say though that the last 3 puppies still need loving homes; foster or final. Please do contact us for information.

Only two of our members wrote to us and offered their help. I would kindly ask them to get in touch with us if they want their donations returned or let us know if they are happy with those funds being used for another emergency in the future.
