THE STORY

We always try to write with as much emotion as possible, in an effort to reach out, touch you and draw you in to join yet another fight for life.

This story however we will attempt to write based on facts only — because it asks hard questions, the answers to which we do not know.

We do know, however, that every once in a while you simply have to figure out how to go on, even when you can’t.

SHADOW

Shadow is a stray, rescued off the streets by someone who meant to help her. The person did not plan to adopt the cat but only took her in because she was heavily pregnant, nevertheless accepting responsibility for her and her kittens. She gave birth and for a while all was good.

Then one terrifying day Shadow somehow managed to fall out of the 6th floor window of the apartment building the rescuer lived in, and ended up all broken and helpless in a veterinary clinic.

The rescuer paid part of the initial bill but after receiving detailed information about the surgeries and care Shadow would need to fully recover, asked for her to be euthanized.

That was the moment the clinic contacted us and asked if we could help.

Upon admission Shadow was in shock; with multiple fractures, one of which a compound open one, and with trauma-induced hepatitis — a life threatening secondary condition often developing after a fall. The vet team managed to stabilize her and performed an emergency surgery addressing the open fracture, securing it with an external fixation device. More surgeries are required for the remaining fractures in the legs. Because she was unable to nurse, Shadow also developed mastitis, inflammation of the mammary glands, for which treatment has been started.

THE EUTHANASIA

Shadow will not be euthanized, of course.

She will not be euthanized because of the kindness of the vet team, who refused to kill a young animal with a full chance for recovery.

She will not be euthanized because we will step in, despite the fact that we have active ongoing rescues, chronically ill patients and pending bills.

She will not be euthanized because, if we paraphrase the wise Little Prince, “You become responsible forever for what you have rescued“. Her rescuer could not carry that responsibility to the end, but we will.

We named her Shadow because she is a shadow of a cat. Help return life & light to her beautiful eyes by donating for her medical care.
