THE BIG AND THE STRONG

What is the role you play in the world if you are big and strong?

The sub-human who hit the tiny kitten from our story on the head hard enough to fracture his skull and then set him on fire, would probably say: to hurt and kill.

We, as you imagine, would beg to differ.

Baby Ginger’s story is short, painfully familiar but with an unexpected twist.

Baby Ginger, who would fit in the palms of your hands, was recently born on the streets of a large city. One of hundreds of thousands of little furry souls, living and dying around us unknown and unnamed while the world keeps turning, Baby Ginger somehow managed to survive a couple of months, dodging cars and stray dogs, his mommy feeding him, invisible to people.

Then one day Baby Ginger disappeared, only to be found on the next lying in a patch of grass, lifeless, in shock, with a fractured head and a gaping burn wound.

THE END

Only it wasn’t.

This time luckily the end did not come for the tiny stray kitten. Another human found him, also big and strong, but different. This human was kind. He did not think that the big and strong were meant to spread darkness, to hurt, to kill. He did not accept such an end for the tiny universe that was Baby Ginger, so he picked up the lifeless body from where it lay in the grass, and held him close.

Baby Ginger was taken to a veterinary clinic and his complicated rescue began.

HOPE FOR BABY GINGER

Baby Ginger is about to undergo a series of complex reconstructive surgeries. A procedure called debridement will carefully clean the surface of the exposed bone, followed by superficial curettage to refresh and prepare the area for a skin graft. A section of neighboring skin will then be moved forward onto the damaged zone in what is known as advancement skin flap. If Baby Ginger’s body is strong enough and manages to promote development of granulation tissue over the exposed bone, a separate skin graft will also be applied in a consequent procedure, thus closing the wound completely.

The vet team has warned that any delay in performing the procedure will increase the risk of failure. The surface of the skull was meant to be covered by skin and every day of it remaining exposed decreases it’s viability as a base layer for living tissue.

UPDATE | August 13, 2018

We are now ready with the incredible details and photos from Baby Ginger’s first of a series of surgeries, with an update on how he is doing.

What the surgical team discovered when the tiny kitten was sedated and prepped at the operating table, and the debridement process had started removing damaged tissue from the wound — was that parts of the skull bone were missing altogether!

The dark areas around the wound which we had assumed were necrotic bone, turned out to be brain and bits of the meninges, the membranous envelope which surrounds and protects the delicate brain tissue. Baby Ginger had spent at least 5 days since his rescue before we found out about him with areas of his brain exposed to the elements, totally unprotected.

That he had not developed an infection of the brain, the vet team very cheap xanax considers a true miracle. Baby Ginger’s strong spirit seems to occupy an even stronger little body.

After cleaning the wound the senior surgeon initiated the restoration procedure by pulling and layering neighboring muscle and skin over the damaged section. A negative-pressure vacuum technique is being applied with a special dressing to draw out fluid from the wound and increase blood flow to the area. Because of the unexpected discovery Baby Ginger is now considered at an even higher risk of infection so he is on intravenous antibiotics, and will remain hospitalized longer than planned.

Baby Ginger has the bluest blue eyes and the cutest furry face.

Baby Ginger has forgiven. He has forgiven people, forgiven evil.

He is an innocent victim in a frightful war which only we can stop — but only if we are united. We held Baby Ginger in the palms of our hands during one of his examinations, and while the vet carefully looked over his injuries the tiny kitten with a fractured head crowned by a gaping burn wound never stopped turning and looking for cuddles. He would roll over on his back and stick his little paws in the air, trusting, loving..

Do we as a species deserve this forgiveness, trust, and love?

We don’t know.

Fate dealt Baby Ginger a truly stinky hand, showering him with cruelty and danger. But then fate decided to throw in some hope as well for good measure, in the shape of the second human — the different, kind one.

Do you know what we call those different, kind people?
