We found Gianna in a dumpster.
A security guard was walking to work along a back street in Jakarta. Pitiful mewling stopped him in his tracks and made him look around. The sound lead him to a garbage container, inside which he found a small cat. The man could not bring the animal to the premises where he worked, so he hid the kitty away until the end of his day, when he took her to an animal clinic.
After examining Gianna the vets concluded she was most likely a backyard breeder failure, and was born blind. A current trend in Indonesia has breeders mixing purebreds with local cats. Extensive breeding often results in birth defects such as blindness.
Realizing she was defective and could not be sold, the breeder must have simply thrown Gianna away like a useless piece of trash.
Kitty is scheduled for an operation that will remove the tear glands and will close the eyes. The open eye sockets of dysfunctional eyes can serve as entry points to infection and require specialized surgical intervention to seal the socket closed.
UPDATE, October, 2015
Gianna’s left eye was removed. The vets are hoping the right eye can be saved, and have left it intact.
Gianna will never see you, but do you see her?
Help us operate this sweet cat.
I raised two male kittens that were also thrown in a dumpster behind a fast food restaurant when they were born. Their eyes had not yet opened. They were wrapped up in a paper bag. Lucky for them it was not a plastic bag and a girl cutting through the alleyway heard then meowing. Although they were always well cared for and vaccinated, I lost Cujo to Pan-Leukemia when he was 7 and I always imagined it was because he was taken from his mother too young, plus he was the runt of the litter. Zyd never got over losing his brother and developed behavioral problems, but he’s still thriving at 18! Neither was blind, but I donated to help not just Gianna but in memory of all the dumpster kitties!
Thank you for your heartfelt story. We appreciate your support!
Please keep posting on face book on her condition. Thank you
Chipped in what I could for her. Maybe little Gianna can get to Blind Cat Sanctuary in NC, USA in the future, they do amazing things there for blind and FIV/FELV kitties. Go bless this baby.
Thank you for your support! We are sure that we will be able to find an adopter for Gianna.
