“My name is AXEL and I will work hard for my dinner, I will work hard for your love.”
Axel, a German Shepherd Dog, longs for nothing more than someone who will appreciate the boundless love he has to give, someone special who knows how to lead him through a big dog’s life full of exploration, challenging tasks and bracing walks in summer and winter alike. Axel’s pain-racked body has healed, his horrific wounds have since scarred over – now his powerful mind needs your devoted care in order to keep lively and healthy. In short, more than anything, Axel wants a job and he wants you!
You don’t know about Axel and his unbelievable rescue? Well, here’s a quick review: Axel was abused, neglected, and suffering from a deadly disease. Let’s Adopt rescued him and we could not make any mistakes with his case. He needed to be treated then adopted to a very special home. The latter part failed miserably, to no fault of the adopter. We’re correcting those mistakes. (read here: Axel’s Rescue).
Wasn’t Axel adopted?
After Axel recovered from his severe physical injuries, he was placed with a family who had not been advised of certain behavioral problems. These problems were not disclosed by the former founder – much less acknowledged as such – to anyone at all under the “old regime”. There was an upsetting incident involving Axel and his adoptive family on the way from the airport to his new home, with the result that this family no longer wanted Axel and returned him straightaway to LAG.
What were these behavioral problems, you may ask? How bad were they that Axel was rejected on the spot? Surely, Axel deserved a second chance! Yes, Axel most definitely deserved a second chance and he was given one when we engaged an experienced dog trainer, specialized in large working-dog breeds (better late than never). Nothing Axel did would surprise anyone familiar with the dark chapter in his past life, those long, cruel years when he was despised and brutally maltreated to the point of death.
Axel’s intensive sessions with his trainer proved a brilliant success! Most of his behavioral problems were due to a lack of socialization and of Axel not knowing his place in the man-dog hierarchy. With a firm, guiding hand in the future as well, Axel’s character will shine forth as a dog contently obedient and glad to do the bidding of the person he respects as pack leader.
Although, otherwise in robust health, Axel does have a chronic condition called Leishmania which is now barely detectable as the symptoms have receded thanks to medication. Allopurinol is the name of the inexpensive maintenance drug that Axel will need to take for the rest of his life.
Axel’s new family will need to be fully aware of his needs as a large, strong, high-spirited dog. Axel thrives on long hikes and plenty of mental exercise. In other words, a quick walk around the block and a squeaky toy for amusement would not be nearly enough. For the family who adopts him, the hours spent with Axel each day should not be a chore, but a dedicated pleasure which springs from a love for him as fervent and true as the love Axel has been longing to give for so very long.

Hello Lets Adopt! Global team, thank you for saving Axel, he looks so handsome now.
Axel is a beautiful dog and I am truly touched by his story. I would love to adopt him but i currently have two dog and although my heart is big enough for an other, my house and budget isn’t. I hope you are able to find him a home soon. and keep up the amazing work.
I was very concerned about Axel´s story since the beginning. That´s why I keep my eye on him.
I really thought about adopting him, but I think that we adopters should know very well all about his behaviour, in order to not return him, like it happened with the British adopter, what made me sad.
I would really appreciate if you´d share more stories from him, in order to check how much is he improving, where he is living with etc.
Thank you very much.
Hi, unfortunately our Spanish partners have stopped updating us on the situation of Axel. We are also worried and have done everything in our power to help him. We can now only hope his current carers care as much.
