Akmerkez / Pet World… a Husky puppy turns in desperation inside its cage. The lights directly on top of his head make the heat unbearable. He is thirsty. There is no water.
Showing evident signs of distress the puppy eats its own excrements in plein view of the adoring public of “animal lovers”.

A few centimeters away a tiny Chihuaua barely has enough strenght to breath. His lungs are filled with infection. He will not make it through the night.

In 1993, three powerful industrial conglomerates set up to build a Shopping Mall in the Center of Istanbul. They called it Akmerkez.
180,000 square meters, a four story shopping area, 14 and 17 stories of office space and 23 stories of residential area. 41 escalators, 2 panoramic elevators, and 30 elevators.
Akmerkez was a first in Istanbul, and its design made it win prestigious awards.

Summer 2010. Seventeen years have passed since Akmerkez opened its doors to the public. The recent multi-million dollar renovation has barely improved the situation. Empty corridors leading to struggling shops barely able to pay the premium rents. At the bottom floor one shop seems to be doing exceedingly well. Pet World.

Behind its glass cages the shop exhibits its precious commodity. An assortment of puppies and kittens, imported from the neighboring countries lay on top of white sheets of paper that give a false impression of cleanliness and health. Most of those best online pharmacy review xanax animals arrive bearing the scars of an hazardous trip from Russia, Moldova. Many of those animals are ill with distemper and Parvovirus and are sold to unsuspecting clients under the promise that if the animal dies in the first few weeks he will be inmediately replaced by a healthy one.

The animals are thirsty. The animals are ill. No matter how hard they try to mask it, the scent of death floats in the air.

PetShops are, by law, forced to operate under strict health conditions and are subject to strong regulations. PetWorld does not seem to care much about those. This comes as no surprise. The prices those animals command are exhorbitant. A puppy purchased at a russian puppy mill by as little as 50 Euro is sold here for a couple of thousand. With such margings, is not surprising that all regulations and directives are disregarded.

Pet World is one of the most visible cases of animal cruelty at the hands of Pet Shops in Istanbul, and this dirty business will continue as long as turkish animal lovers don’t express their rejection to this inhuman trade.

Tell the people responsible for PETWORLD exactly what you think of these images.

  1. When thousands of strays roaming in the streets of Turkey, petshops should be outlawed. PERIOD!!!.

This is inhumane and abusive practice. The abuse does not end when these poor dogs get adopted, because eventually they end up being dumped in the streets.

The good petshop is a “closed’ petshop.

I fail to understand how Turkish “animal lovers” can continue to support a business when it is so blatantly clear that no care is being taken of the animals priced so highly. Why on earth would anyone pay so much for an animal that is so obviously sick? This is deplorable! Where are the authorities? Why is this place allowed to continue to sell animals? I agree with Sujen, the only good pet shop is the closed pet shop.

  3. all pet shops are the same…..they are a disgrace!! ………all of them should be closed permanently!!!!

  4. Again, the lowest levels of human nature and the hegemlony of sociopathic, greedy, bastards rule!!

Disgusting. This makes me ashamed of my species. Is there any question why dogs and cats are so treasured by us humans???!!!

  5. Cenk Karayazgan says:

This place is a torture for animals….
And the place should be shut down because the cages are smaller than 1/4 of the dimention STATED at THE PET SHOP LAW in Turkey….

Ak Merkez is a GREAT place but this store is A SHAME!!!

  6. Das wäre es!! Grundsätzlich müsste der Handel mit Tieren verboten werden!!
    Kastrationspflicht!!

I HATE ALL THE OWNERS OF THOSE SHOPS…I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY OF THEM TAKING CARE OF THE ANIMALS THEY SELL…THOSE SHOPS MUST BE CLOSED.

  8. As long as people keep buying pets from petshops, petshop owners will keep doing the same thing again and again without any feeling or idea what those animals are going through. It doesn`t matter in which country it is happening. The same thing is happening everywhere.Because these people are only thinking about the money they will get from innocent creatures. One of the biggest petshops in USA “Petsmart” doing the same thing to animals.I am not trying to defend these guys.I am against all kinds of cruelty to animals.Shame on all my species who make animals suffer. For me, these people are kind of mentally and psychologically sick.

  9. Well. I bought a Golden Retriver puppy from this guy. He promised to give me a high quality pup. I waited three months for this puppy. He is three years now and an amazing beautiful Golden. I also give bulut(my dogs name) to Can for training and i didnt see anything bad with him. I also one time ask him why they dont keep water inside the boxes and he told me that small puppies splash water and they can be sick if they lie inside the water. He said they are giving 5-6 times water a day. I also dont like pet shops very much but for me is not true to say bad things about somebody who you dont know only looking for some photos. Sorry but for me you are wrong….

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

So, you bought your nice golden retriever . Congratulations. You were lucky.
I can get you in touch with 9 others whose “purchase” died within a week.

    2. Viktor Larkhill says:

And I wonder… why wouldn’t you adopt one? the shelters are full of them, all of them abandoned by animal lovers like yourself that bought a nice pup a few months earlier.

You are not a fan of petshops but what do you do? You spend thousands on a dog there..

      Its moronic.

  10. To spend thousands on a puppy is my decision. When i spend most of my time with a dog i want him to be an original one. I dont understand why you are so angry after ı told you my experiance. This is the way I think and you must show RESPECT. I take Bulut to some shows and I met there some other people bought their dogs from the same place. They were also happy and didnt tell me bad things about that place. Perhabs you have a special problem with them and you want everybody think like you????

  11. Apparently Banu is a real “animal lover”, the target client of these torture shops. A golden retriever is no different than a Chanel bag which she’ll carry everywhere proudly and no need to care for the dying babies as long as she has her pure-blood GR. Congrats!

  12. Thank you for the concern and informing people about Petworld Turkiye. Our first baby Marni is from Petworld but unfortunately has died as Petworld did not care her properly when she was puppy. We have depend many months at the vets and we have many reports saying the same. So there was an abuse. When we have informed the Can Paksoy his reaction was so weird and he offered another one. ! He sees this little lifes as a good on the shelf. He never apologize and he never accepts that there was an abuse. But he does not change the conditions too. After Marni died we have done many search and seen many complaints about the Petworld.

We have complained the Petworld and the Can Paksoy to the authorities and learned after a while that THEY DO NOT HAVE LEGAL LICENSE TO OPERATE… besides many fault situations to operate ! Means they are illegal.
