A lesson for the Rector of the Yildiz Technical University

Yildiz Technical University.

A respected center of higher learning, training ground for some of the brightest young minds in the country. So many people hold this institution in high regard.
Unfortunately, sometimes, even Universities can align themselves with the views and positions of the uneducated.
The story that follows would be bad enough on its own but it is truly scandalous and pathetic coming from such a respected institution.
I could tell the story with all kind of details but as I don’t want to bore you. I will be straight to the point.

– Rumours start circulating that the Office of the Rector of the Yildiz University will be catching the cats living in an out the campus and dumping them somewhere else. Apparently the rector, Prof. Dr. Ismail YUKSEK believes that there are too many cats and that they are dangerous animals filled with fleas.

–  We called the General Secretary and offered our assistance in neutering the cats and sterilize, vaccinate. They told us that under no circumstance they were planning to catch any cat and that they understood to drop the cats somewhere else would be dangerous to the cats. We would never do that! they say…

– Those who never tell the truth express themselves in the same way so we didn’t believe a word….

– In the evening we sent a group of volunteers to patrol the campus and make sure all cats were ok. And what did we found? To our surprise we bumped face to face with a couple of university workers busy catching cats and dropping them on a plastic bag to be closed buy ambien online reviews with rope and thrown away.

– As usual people doing that kind of job are cowards.. they run away the moment they saw us, dropping the bags behind. Upon questioning they denied everything, first they denied having anything to do with the bags (and its content) then they acknowledged the situation but refused to tell us who they received orders from… then they ran away..

It was pathetic.

So, here is the truth. The Rector of the Yildiz Technical University, Ismail Yuksek, is responsible for this cowardly act. What were those two individuals going to do with the cats? were they going to drop them in the highway? Maybe in some garbage container?

Yildiz University is filled with students who are animal lovers. Many of them are our members. Mr. Yuksek, what a ridiculous way to taint the good name of your insitution.. Your actions and those of your team are wrong, illegal, criminal and cowardly. Furthermore they are useless.. No matter how many cats you catch and drop (or kill) there will always be new cats arriving. The only way to reduce the cat population is to neuter the existing cats and allow them to stay in their territory. Anything else is not only useless, its illegal, cowardly and ridiculous…

Please drop a quick line or a call to Prof. Dr. Ismail YUKSEK, The Rector.

Phone: +90 212 261 20 02 Fax: +90 212 261 42 84

Simply tell him that his actions are bringing disrepute to this respected institution and that he should use his brains for something productive instead of planning cat catching operations…

Unbelieveble….

  1. I sent the following e-mail to YTI yesterday, but haven’t received a reply:

Dear Prof. Drs. Yuksek and Ahlatcioglu,,

I am an American wildlife biologist who lives in Istanbul.

I’ve just read about Yildiz Technical University’s plan to eradicate cats on campus by moving them somewhere else. This is a completely irresponsible approach, AND it won’t work! I urge you to reconsider.

Throughout the world, people have tried to eradicate animals like coyotes and feral cats by killing them. What happens is that more coyotes or feral cats move in quickly to replace them. Those replacement animals have twice as many babies as normal, until the area is once again full.

A far better solution biologically is to neuter all females on campus that are not neutered yet. Since the campus will be full, no new cats will move in. And the cats outside YTI will have fewer babies because there are no “empty” territories for new babies. This biologically-proven model is the only one found effective by the World Health Organization for controlling street animals. Please read this Turkish-language article for more information: http://www.shkd.org/tr/neuter.html.

I’ve heard that animal rescue groups have contacted you and have offered to neuter the cats and apply flea products like Frontline. Please let them do so. Even better, show that YTI has a heart and a sense of public responsibility. Arrange for the funding of this project through YTI. It will probably cost about the same as hiring people to capture and move the cats, and it will be far more effective.

Make YTI, and Istanbul, a place that cares for animals and controls their population sensibly and humanely.

    Sincerely,

    Sharon Yildiz

  2. yesterday I have already written this ” high man “. Many may have a good education, however, no education of the heart. My family thanks the students who worry about these cats and publish this scandal.
These young Turkish people earn our respect !
The persons who break a law are worse than a Cat-flea…

  3. I have also sent an email.. no reply as yet , why am I not surprised ?
Do these people even know of the Animal Welfare Law 5199 .. I wonder.

  4. University should be the place of Culture, not an example for uncivil behaviours! Killing is never the solution, spay/neuter is. Be kind with animals! I wrote him 2 emails, I’m waiting for a response that probably won’t ever come…
All my support to activists in Turkey!

  6. I think I have seen one of the cruelest actthat was done to kittens. It as on a menonite farm. I was a child then. My parents said I could hav one of the kittens the owner said I could have one. I walked about two miles to see my kitten only to see their oldest son using the kittens for a target. He was shooting all of them. Target practice. I was there in time to see my kitten shot. This was a long time ago but I will never forget it.

  7. doruk saglam says:

    hey people,
It is very exciting that all of you are interested with the cat situation. I study at YTU which you are talking about of it’s rector, I’m sadly telling you that rector will not going to reply your mails because his IQ is not enough to realize what he is doing to our campus. This is not the first case he interfered. He is now moving Art and Design Faculty of YTU, which was in the center of Istanbul(downtown), to 20-30 miles away from the downtown. What he doesn’t know is an Art and Design Faculty can not be far away from the city-life, there won’t be any inspiration, any art.

Anyways I just saw that it’s been 2 months since the last reply…
