DAY ONE.
“Canada eliminated the death penalty on July 14, 1976.
The last execution in Canada took place on December 11, 1962 at Toronto’s Don Jail.”
Canada is, by all measurable standards, one of the most advanced countries in the world. The Economist ranks Vancouver as the world’s most liveable city, ahead of Vienna and Melbourne. Toronto is number 4.
Canada is the country where the cream of the crop wants to emigrate. A haven of sorts where individual freedoms are respected and communities care for their members.
A model society.
This is what makes Brindi’s story so puzzling and this is the reason why the eyes of the international animal welfare community are now fixed on Canada as a whole and on the city of Halifax in particular.
Brindi is an adopted mutt. She is smart, gentle, affectionate and has passed obedience classes.
On July 24, Brindi was seized and put on death row.
A minor incident, completely distorted by some of the people involved, would lead into a most incredible ordeal for Brindi and her family. Brindi’s owner, Francesca, an American recently emigrated to Canada, found herself tangled in the worst possible plot any animal owner could ever envisage: Her beloved dog, her child, put on death row by the City of Halifax.
There was never an offence charged; Brindi was assessed by an expert and found highly trainable. Thousands of dollars were paid to get the execution order quashed in court. But the city ignored the Law and kept Brindi. Instead of holding a fair hearing to decide whether Brindi presents a true danger (she obviously does not), the city charged Brindi’s owner with 3 by-law violations in a last minute attempt to push for a new kill order.
On the 23rd of February Brindi’s owner was found guilty on all counts.
Sentence hearing will take place on March 9. It is feared the judge will order the Killing of the animal.
We have 13 days to Save Brindi.
History is full of miscarriages of justice.
Brindi’s case is one of those. It was never about the dog.
It was obvious from the beginning that the issue had grown into a personal vendetta, as it is too often the case; a power play where Brindi and her owner Francesca had become mere pawns in the hands of “authorities” clearly more concerned about saving face than about truly pursuing justice.
We have 13 days to Save Brindi.
Today we are launching a local and international campaign to drive public opinion and to prompt the world to take action.
We want each and every one of our readers and the entire international community to stop for a second and think.
Her life is all that Brindi has. We will not allow it to be taken away from her. Think how you would feel if it was YOUR child put in this position. Going through months of isolation while waiting for the moment to be administered a lethal injection and killed. What would you think of Canada every morning if you were in Francesca’s place?
Today the internet and social media have made a new kind of world and a new way to demand justice possible. There are millions of us ready to stand up and fight for what most would consider worthless.. a dog.
However, Brindi is not just a dog. Brindi is a living being, with feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear, longing. A living being that will be executed unless we all stand together and take action.
Starting from today, Brindi is no longer just a dog.
Brindi is now a symbol that represents our most essential values: Justice and the Right to live.
The Universal Declaration of Animal Rights was solemnly proclaimed in Paris on 15 October 1978 at the UNESCO headquarters.
Article 7 states:
Any act unnecessary involving the death of an animal, and any decision leading to such an act, constitutes a crime against life.
We need YOU to tell the government of Canada and the City of Halifax that to execute an innocent animal based on obscure by-laws is about the lowest a government can sink into. We will do our best to send a clear message to the Canadian Government and concretely to the City of Halifax; we will show them that doing this would be a terrible mistake, a miscarriage of justice.
We have 13 days to save Brindi and we are going to need YOUR help.
Get involved. We wont give you a model letter to copy and past. We want YOU to speak your mind.
Contact:
Mayor Peter J. Kelly, Mayor of Halifax on ph: 902-490-4010. Email kellyp@halifax.ca and express your deepest inner feelings regarding this case.

What makes you to think that you are allowed to take life.? You did not give Birindi’s life so you can not take it back. Only god can…Please think about it..
I shared this post and sent the email to whom interested.
Canada migth be one of the most advanced countries in the world but, you guys are so cruel to the animals. The whole world knows about the pleasure you get out of killing the babe seals to feed the endustry of stupid fashion victims. How can you possibly put a dog on a death row?????!!!!!! the poor thing is owned and obviously not causing any harm to anybody… Please lift his death sentence or are you gonna put scraching cats in a death row as well as a next project of cruelty. it is just discusting!!!!
I emailed Halifax and also Caesar Milan here in the states. Sometimes he can step in and help.
This is a shame. There is no reason to have this baby put to death before his time. STOP!!!! Let him go home PLEASE!!!!
please do not let this poor dog die, he has his right to live as do we all, this is a life we are talking about, not polictics, justice must be done for this poor dog and its owner.
This is so wrong – this dog hasn’t been violent, she is loved, so why can something like this happen??? Something is not right here …. justice needs to prevail and some common sense as well. Re-unite Brindi with her owner!!
WHY ?????????? This is so very sad, as did not need to happen.
Please saved Brindi..
canada is gross they are killing harp seals again 42%are skinned alive they are jackasses as far as i am concerned .
gross gross canada the are killing the seals 42% are skinned alive they are discusting
I am against killing this dog. There should be a right to a fair trial, and it needs to be proven from both sides, if the person(s) involved are paying court costs, then this should be allowed to be proven beyond a doubt with both sides getting to present their sides with professionals involved.
Thank you for your time, and please listen to the public, so you can prove that this is indeed a fair trial from all aspects of this case.
From now on, everyday ı will send my deepest feelings in deferent ways…to whom interested.
hello there, i wrote a letter to mr. kelly, … so i will wait for his reaktion.
hope love and peace***

shared. what else can we do??? please let us know.
This is clearly officials covering someone’s A_ _ who thinks there more important then the rest of us. The people who are pursuing it to this extent are disgusting. You obviously have no souls. I’m sure you’ve heard of a little thing called karma. The citizens of Canada should be ashamed of there country for the acts of cruelty they allow to take place to the animals that live there. This is simply gross. They say that there country is advanced, mabye from a caveman’s point of view and certainley not from people in this century! Mayor Peter J. Kelly, you need take a moment, step back, open your eye’s and take a real good look at what you are doing, because the rest of the world is watching. People elected you to your position and can certainly elect to vote you out! Do the right thing and set brindi free to be with her mother that love’s her.
Have emailed them. I know i’m from the UK and don’t understand, but surely the more voices saying this is wrong can hopefully pressure them into a u-turn. Good luck with the cause!! My thoughts are with Brindi and her owner.
I send an email to Mayor Peter J. Kelly, I hope that e-mail will be read by authorities.
Dear Sirs,
Allow me to say that I find your decision to put a dog down (after all the evaluations that she has received) completely irrational and unethical. Do not put Brindi down. Her owner loves and deeply cares for her and it is wrong to do that in a world where we are trying to teach people that animal abuse is a bad thing. This is not just abuse for the animal but for the human owner as well.
Regards,
I have sent emails from all the family and i will also be making a phone call ..Also shared far and wide x
PLEACE STOPP!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have sent a letter to the email provided…I hope everything turns out okay. Stay strong and don’t lose hope!
I agree with Suna…. No country can called themselves “advanced” that would allow the merciless slaughter of thousands of innocent seals! And now this! Yes, the eyes of the animal loving public worldwide is watching! You have no right to take this creature’s life!
Please find it in your HEART to SAVE HER there is NO REASON TO PUT HER DOWN
I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WITH HER. THANK YOU I WILL KEEP HER AND HER FAMILY IN MY PRAYERS
PLEASE FIND IT YOUR HEART AND DO NOT PUT BRINDI TO SLEEP HE HAS A LOVING FAMILY SO WHY DO YOU HAVE TO MESS THAT ALL UP TO THE FAMILY OF BRINDI GIVE HIM LOVE FOR ME AND I WILL KEEP YOU ALL IN MY PRAYERS
This is a terrible tragedy, the dog and owner must be distraught. If this was my dog, I would do the same, please help release Brindi – what on earth do they think they will achieve??
plz…dont let this happen.i’ve post this link at my FB.hope it would help…..
come on Canada, wake up you don’t have any right to do this, how bad is your country to let this happen to this poor pooch shame on you all.
We look to Canda as a progressive country but my views are changing quickly. Brindi has shown she can be trained. She has a loving owner who will do anything for her. She stands fighting for Brindi, facing a world of bureacracy to let Brindi live. How can you not listen, not allow Brindi to live. We preach rehabilitation of people, how can we not offer the same chance to Brindi? Our animals are our children. You need to understand how important they are. Respect our right to protect our children.
WHY DOES MAN HAVE TO KILL EVERYTHING AROUND HIM?? THIS HAS TO STOP, WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO PUT A WONDERFUL ANIMAL? WHAT IF SOMEONE JUST DECIDED TO PUT DOWN YOUR CHILD? SAME THING. KILLING IS KILLING. THINK HARD ABOUT IT, REALLY THINK..
I am in the UK and am willing to go to the newspapers about this, it is disgusting, shame on you
What happened in the end ? Please let me know !
I did a search to find out what happened and found a news article online advising that Brindi was not put down. Although this sounds like it was a horrible situation, it does not seem like the laws in Canada are much different than the UK. I know in the UK a dog can be put down if it bites another dog or even scares people. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/nova-scotia/story/2010/04/30/ns-brindi-dog-spared.html
Can anyone in the town go to the local TV stations and have them cover this or is the town also under a death threat warning by this mayor!
I say send this link to bbc, cnn, animal planet, anything and everyone you can think of.
