LEAH

Kitty Leah’s story is another one of those we find especially hard to believe.

A kind person found Leah wandering the streets emaciated and disheveled, took her in and tried to feed her. This is when it became obvious that Leah could not open her mouth. The kitten was rushed to a veterinary clinic where an examination determined that her jaw was in pieces, and found old orthopedic bolts, wires, and a massive infection inside her mouth. It looked as if someone somewhere had taken an injured Leah in, attempted to help her, failed and disposed of her by simply returning her to the street.

And so a second vet team set off to work on Leah’s mouth, unfortunately once again surgery was unsuccessful. Leah’s body rejected the implants, her head swell up and the second orthopedic fixation set was removed.

When we learnt about her Leah was on her last life, and facing euthanasia.

SAVING LEAH

We immediately admitted the kitten to our clinic where the senior orthopedic surgeon examined her mouth and was dismayed to uncover the extent of her problems. The left side of Leah’s jaw is literally falling apart while a significant part of the bone on the right side is missing, the reason Leah’s tongue slightly protrudes outside her mouth. A massive bone build-up was discovered further back along the jawline, enlarging it to five times the normal thickness, preventing Leah from opening her mouth and effectively starving her.

The vet team recommended that we don’t delay surgery, so as usual we didn’t.

A titanium implant was inserted to secure the left side of Leah’s jaw, and the excess bone was scraped away. A second surgery will be scheduled to address the missing bone section as the procedure is too complex to fit within the scope of the first operation.

HOPE

Freed from the horrendous bone build-up in her mouth, Leah is now able to eat for what the vets think is the first time in weeks. She is a very gentle cat, welcomes attention and simply cannot get enough of the food she is being regularly offered. Her newly shaped jaw requires frequent movement to prevent a new build up, so she is enjoying plenty of small meals throughout the day.

UPDATE | February 12th, 2018

After 3 weeks behind bars.. today we freed Leah!

Perhaps because of her unusual looks not many people came forward to offer a foster home for Leah, so it took us almost three weeks to find a solution and finally discharge her from the veterinary clinic.

Leah will now spend some time recovering and getting ready for her next surgery. Message Let’s Adopt! Global if you are interested in adopting.

UPDATE | February 20th, 2018

After a week in her foster home Leah is starting to look more and more like a real cat. She has relaxed even further with people, absolutely loving any attention she can get.

While Leah is recovering before her next surgery, we are starting to look for her forever family. The sweet girl is absolutely healthy and the vet team is feeling very positive about her jaw, the surgeries for which should be finished within a couple of months. Message us at Let’s Adopt! Global if you think Leah should be a part of your kitty team, or share her request for a home.

UPDATE | March 22nd, 2018

Leah, the small cat with the huge presence, needs you again.

Baby Leah has been recovering from her first surgery in a loving foster home but recently she’s caused us some concern as blood was found in her urine. We immediately arranged for a visit to the vet clinic where an exceptionally thorough checkup was performed. Full blood and chemistry panels were run, and she was subjected to various specialized examinations, such as ultrasound and others. The vets did not find a specific reason for the blood, all tests returned good results and neither of the series of examinations revealed any problems with her internal organs.

Leah was scheduled for spaying as she is now stable enough to undergo the surgery, and the vet team will be monitoring her closely during the next couple of weeks.
