“If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together… there is something you must always remember.  You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.   But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you.”

– Winnie the Pooh

The home foreclosure crisis in America is affecting the most innocent of victims.  They are left behind when families are forced out of their homes with nowhere to go.    Most homeless shelters and many apartment landlords don’t allow or welcome these innocent victims.   And sometimes, people just don’t’ care about their companions enough to take them with them.    So, they are left behind.  Abandoned to fend for themselves.  Or worse, locked in the closed home.

These victims have no voice. They didn’t  choose to be left behind.  They don’t know why they’re left alone with no food, or water.  They don’t know why their loved ones are no longer home.  These are the foreclosure pets.

Orangey is one of those victims.  His family left in the middle of the night and left him behind.  For two weeks he was locked inside!!  A neighbor spotted Orangey  and called Animal Control but was told that they wouldn’t  do anything without the bank’s permission.  The bank never returned the call.  So the neighbor contacted Let’s Adopt! for help.

We came right away.

We found him with no food or water…emaciated, dehydrated, and very ill.   Still, he didn’t want to leave.  He seemed to want to keep waiting for his family to come back to get him not knowing  they never would.       Orangey is now our responsibility and we won’t leave him alone.

Orangey’s condition is critical and needs help.  His kidneys show some damage and he has a systemic infection.  Please help us give Orangey a second chance.

UPDATE May 9

ORANGEY has been in intensive case for the last 72 hours. The weeks spent locked in that home without food or water damaged the kidneys irreversibly.

Orangey put up a brave fight but in the end, he lost.. he lost his life against cruelty, against neglect, inhumanity and the absurdity of a system that treats animals as dispensable things that you just leave behind.

Goodbye little friend… we’ll always remember you.

  1. The people that leave these pets behind should be charged. How cruel! I have a dog that was rescued from a foreclosed home. She, too, was left behind with nothing and locked in a house. What is wrong with people? I pray for the speedy recovery of this cat.:)

  2. Terri Macaitis says:

Please get well soon Orangey. I can’t donate but my heart is big enough to love all of you. You will know love again. Not all 2 legged humans are beasts.

  3. Why is this happening in America never mind spending millions on arms help these animals . You would not leave one of your own behind would you

  4. Joëlle, from Brussels says:

What’s wrong with people indeed?? All my wishes to sweet Orangey, the starved cat… now he’ll catch up and surely be eventually adopted by a loving family who, whatever circumstances, will never let him down… Donated a bit as usual… Thanks LAG! (Is he now in Valencia, Viktor?)

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Hi Joelle.. well.. no.. he is in Boston, I think he’ll stay there, I think his case can be treated there..
      fingers crossed.. 🙁

  5. Breaks my heart. I have 25 rescued cats and 6 dogs. I could not imagine doing that to one of mine I don’t care what my situation is. They go where I go. I do not understand the mindset of someone that could do a thing like that to an innocent animal that loved and trusted them to care for it. I am donating on behalf of my kitty cats that are all fat and sassy. God Bless Orangey and God Bless you.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Thank you Marie… you have quite a gang yourself…
thank you for your help.. xxxx

  6. P Fiennes says:

America is sick, sick from Obama and his gang, sick from all the thieving banks and corporations and the criminal political elite. To do this to a living creature is inhumane and shows just how broken the people of America are. Even of you are being thrown out, you DO NOT leave any living creature locked up to slowly starve to death, that is sickening. I pray for Orangey that he gets the strength to recover with the love and care he is getting now.

  7. goldie catania says:

I can understand people losing their homes but will never understand leaving your pet behind. They could have at least turned him over to some place to be taken care of. Never left to starve or die. How horrible. Shame shame on them.

  8. Jane Pipkin says:

poor sweet Orangey, thanks so much for what you do, Viktor! I’m out of donations again now for a couple of weeks, in fact I’m trying to figure out how to pay my $152 vet bill, but I will help again when I can. xoxo Orangey, beautiful cat, you know more love now and you will know more and more love again.

  9. crystal will says:

well a foreclosure had an owner so find out who they are and where they are and hold them accountable, animals are unfortunately not important enough, the laws need to change, people should have to attend courses on how to care and sign contracts with the spca or some kind of organization like they do with children ,animals should be and are in my books a privledge

  10. Heidi Marie says:

The cat sitting besides me purring like a rusty motor boat was abandoned when my neighbors across the street moved out. They abandoned all their cats and among them was Mama. She was pregnant and out alone in the middle of winter. I took her when I saw her shivering on my doorstep, pressed against the glass for warmth. She had her babies in my home and I am finding them all loving homes. Mama didn’t ask to be abandoned and I know the sting of abuse so together we love each other unconditionally.

all these poor innocent animals are in my prayers.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Thank you Heidi… many thanks for saving Mama… xx
      Viktor

  11. Honestly, I would have broken a window and tried to get him out or put some food in. Go ahead and my me buy a new window, I couldn’t leave an animal like that.

  12. I could never leave my cats no matter what , their my kids. Could anybody leave THEIR kids behind to starve, I don’t think so. So leave your 4- legged child behind. If I could afford another mouth to feed I would take him in a heart beat. Hang in there Orangey there is someone for you how will love you and never leave you behind. Thank you Baebara P

  13. Trisha Stanton says:

    NAME AND SHAME…THE OWNERS…THE LANDLORDS…THE BANKS…
NAME AND SHAME….AND DO IT AGAIN….NO PEACE FOR THE WICKED…..JUST THE KIND OF STORIES THAT NEWSPAPERS THRIVE ON….HELL MEND THEM……
    ….GREETINGS FROM SCOTLAND…..KEEP THE FAITH…..
    …………))………..

  14. Donated…on behalf of those who I would NEVER and have NEVER left behind. I have been in the same situation, and would not take a place that would not accept my pets. There is always a place. So what if it’s not the most ideal place, your pets are your family, your responsibility… This is criminal, and my heart is broken just seeing this. Sending prayers on behalf of my beloved Charlie, found in a box, a left-behind cat who was given another blissful, peaceful 14 years with us after being dumped. At least his ‘family’ didn’t leave him IN the apartment.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Thank you Helen… we are passing your best wishes to Orangie…
      Charlie was very lucky…
      xxx

  15. Susan DiCello says:

There is no excuse for anyone to leave them in such a dire situation to die. That is what shelters are for if indeed they can no longer take care of their pet. I think anyone who could do this has a real problem with empathy and shows in the way they live their lives. Animal cruelty should be handled by the law, always….. Makes me feel sick

  16. Kim Savage (@kimswordworld) says:

I am in the foreclosure property preservation business and this is not a rare occurrence. I have bought many home and found homes for them. We have found them locked in the homes and outside the homes. People are not “suddenly” thrown out of their homes. Depending on the state – it can take anywhere from 4 months to 4 years. It is not difficult to turn your pet over to animal control before you leave. I think that they need to prosecuted to the fullest for this kind of cruelty.

  17. please adopt Orangey he needs someone right now,and know animals don’t deserve to be abuse or left behind, they need loved and caring.I hope there is someone out there that will adopt him.God bless all the animals!!!!!!!!

  18. Desiree prinsloo says:

It is a life time commitment when you have a pet. How can you leave it behind in a hurry, they did not make the mistake why should they be punished? If anything would happen that is the first I take with me…. my pets no matter what. I hope Orangey pull trough but I also know he is in the best care…

  19. Sue Wilde says:

I don’t understand how people can be so cruel and heartless – if he were in the Kansas City area I would adopts him and take care of him. Will send a donation for a speedy recovery.

  20. Is he at Angell Memorial? I may go see him and offer to adopt him.
have to convince my husband we need another cat.

  21. Judy Chute says:

Will the owners that left him be charged with cruelty?..and the bank that foreclosed and would not return a call knowing an animal was locked inside be charged with cruelty?…the Bank should take care of this vet bill to save “Orange”..certain the owner’s do not care, nor have funds to do so, or did they think someone was going to be checking the house and find the kitty and he would be ok? What is the name of the bank?….that would be of interest.. Has anyone sent something in writing to them..stating this kitty’s needs.. Such a horrid thing..

  22. Cindy Anderson says:

Several followers want updates. Positive prayers for good updates! ♥

  23. This poor guy. If all of my cats weren’t felv and fiv+ from my last foster litter I’d be begging to take him.
My house is a final home. For unwanteds. Felv and fiv+ cats. Before that cats in advanced stage kidney failure. Senior cats.
I would rather a few weeks or months of happiness for them because I can live with that, knowing I gave them a loving home for whatever time they have left.
Pets are lifelong commitments. Not area rugs you replace when you feel it’s convenient.

  24. RC Keldarion says:

There are rescues for just such circumstances. Unfortunately, some people are a waste of oxygen and should not be allowed the blessing of pets. I’ve been homeless and my cats were with me. We lived in my SUV because the homeless shelter would not take them. This cat reminds me sooooo much of the fellow sitting on my shoulder and purring right now. It breaks my heart that he didn’t want to leave, thinking his people would come back for him. If you find names of the people or the bank, let me know. I’ll post them to name and shame. Bless this poor kitty and please, please let him be OK.

  25. Heidi Marie says:

    Viktor,

I didn’t put it in my last comment but I did donate what little I had left. I wish Orangey all the best and I shared the link on my FB page so hopefully you get a little more that way.

God bless you and all that you do.

    Sincerely,

    Heidi

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Heidi… I’m terribly terribly sorry.. Orangey passed. We are devastated.
      I’m very very sorry..

  26. Rev. Renee L TenEyck says:

this is actually more common than people realize. When the property is foreclosed, someone may not enter the property again for many weeks or months. When someone is evicted from a rental property, however, I don’t understand why the owner or rental management can’t go in (or send maintenance staff in) right away to specifically check for remaining animals. It would take only a few minutes.

  27. Just wondering how this sweet kitty is doing now…thank you for what you do…

  28. Hi
Canyou please give us an update on Orangey
    Regards
    Desiree

  29. Praying for you Orangie – that you get well and get a loving home, where they won’t abandon you again! I just donated what I can, and only hope they’ll be able to save you.<3 <3 <3

  30. Joyce Y. Van Pelt says:

My God. Too many animals are being abused and neglected, especially in the USA, richest nation on earth. All people seem to value in the US is money anymore! I am 67+ and I have seen this country get more and more materialistic everyday. Why couldn’t someone have knocked the door in or broken a window to get this terribly suffering cat out? Are we now becoming a nation of cowards? Have we forgotten that “THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL”? .Why are so many healthy pets being gassed in so called “shelters” every day and their tiny bodies thrown into dumpsters to rot with the filthy trash in places like New York (financial capital of the world and home of the very wealthy)? There is NO EXCUSE and payback (karma) will one day hit us hard. “To whom much is given much shall be required” as President John F. Kennedy so wisely told us in his 1961 Inaugural address.

  31. Todd Carpenter says:

Victor, I am so sorry. This poor thing seems to be suffering terribely. Could you PLEASE post the let’s adopt! global mailing address again for me as I lost it and I don’t have a credit or debit card. I have’nt been able to donate for some time because I’m taking care of a very sick pet of my own, but I’d like to at least send something. Thank u.

  32. Donated for Orangey the other day.. How is he doing? My heart is with him, as I rescue cats too! (:

  33. Padraig Fienens says:

So sad, so very sad… these owners need to be found and taken to court, it is the only way that this type of situation can be stopped. To not do this would be senseless…

  34. I hope this people read what they have done to their cat and how he suffered and waited for them! I hope he will follow them in their dreams, forever haunting them! Shame to you !

  35. Jennifer DeBord says:

<3 God Bless this sweet baby now and welcome him into your loving arms, Lord. This makes me so sad. I just do not understand the inhumanity of people and their thinking on what is right for an animal. Surely these people knew that leaving him there with nothing would bring horrible consequences. I pray this family realizes their mistake and is left with the guilt that they killed an innocent baby, and I pray that they decide NEVER to have an animal again. God Bless Orangey and all like him who have to endure these sickening, cruel acts towards them. What makes it even worse is that the animals look to us to protect and care for them, and when they just leave with no notice.. that poor creature has no clue what is wrong, or what it did to be left behind. My heart is broken <3
We love you, Orangey! ALWAYS <3 ~ The DeBord-Raynors

  36. I run a no kill cat rescue and this is why I offer our No Paws Left Behind permanency program. There is no excuse in the world to just leave an animal behind when you don’t go back daily and take care of it’s needs. This breaks my heart.

Due to reasons not caused by my husband or me, we lost our home also. We had 4 cats and 2 ducks. Our home was foreclosed upon, we had to move to a motel with 1 of the cats and 3 children. Our other 2 cats and ducks stayed on our property (the property was ours). We went back and fed and watered our ducks and cats daily, went in the middle of the night during storms to check on them. The very moment they moved the mobile home, we took the cats to the motel with us and then got a house and took the ducks. Never in my life would I had left my pet behind to do nothing other than die.

I understand rehoming a pet due to foreclosure but never just leaving them to die.

RIP Orangey. I will never forget your story.

  37. RIP Orangey

  38. Judy Chute says:

I am so sorry for the great loss of “Orangey” 🙁 ..my deepest sympathy and condolences to all that saved him from dying alone, hungry, thirsty and so ill.. The neighbor who saw him, the rescue that got him out..and the hospital that worked so hard to bring him back.

Thank you for giving him fluids, comfort, softness to lie on…and love…

    Very tearful regards…

    Judy

  39. so sorry to hear poor Orangy lost his fight for life. God Bless you Viktor for giving him love and attention in the last days of his life. Such a sweet cat. The owners need to be traced and prosecuted and pay a huge fine to be given to you

  40. Judy Chute says:

….Godspeed, sweet “Orange”…run free, with all that your heart desires in the special place for kitties in Heaven..

    Judy

  41. This is so sad, he was such brave cat due to the fact that his family left him behind, he was a true, honest love that anybody can take an example from.RIP big boy, life can just go so far.

  42. Charmaine Morgan says:

    R.I.P dear boy.

  43. My heart breaks for dear Orangey…….in my heart I thought my small donation might save him however I realize that all the money in the world could not undo the horrendous neglect he had gone through. I have eight special needs cats and know that they know they are loved even when the end is near. ORANGEY knew goodness and soft caring hands even when he was letting go. bless his little strong heart…we know angels will make you whole and loved again….

  44. My heart bleeds for you Orangey. You never had a chance to enjoy life to its fullest and to be loved by so many. You have left us to go to a place where there is so much happiness awaiting you and to be loved forever! As you cross the Rainbow bridge to be greeted by so many of your now new friends where there are angels to help you along the path of happiness you will will always find peace and love where there will never be anymore pain or suffering for you. You will always and forever be in everyones heart and always be in our thoughts and prayers. For you have been an inspiration to us Orangey and may you continue to live on forever in our hearts and smile with us. I wish you had a better life than what this person gave you but now you will be at peace and be surrounded with love and happiness pretty boy. R.I.P now and be well my friend. XOXO always! The tears will keep coming when I think of you but there will be a smile in between each tear. Good bye my friend!

  45. Joëlle Ley says:

So sad… not even had the time of getting used to loving this little guy, and there he goes… At least surrounded by love and care – you did the best you could to save him… May he rest in peace and meet all those who preceded him in Heaven… :'( <3 – And may the evil persons who left him behind be found and prosecuted!

  46. Chris Kochesky says:

That is so sad, I had to fight back my tears when reading this. Thank you for caring and doing your very best…keep spreading the word and keep up the good fight. I dream of a world where cruelty towards animals doesn’t exist. We have a long way to go but we must keep the faith. Again, thank you so much, you have a friend (and ally) in me!

  47. Breaks my heart how people can be so cruel to a family member. Orangey, find Fat Cat Midnight and Pumpkin and tell them I love them. You are a blessing.

  48. Orangey is now in the arms of Mother Nature he did not die along he had love an caring humans until the end an it is sad how humans throw away non-human life like trash I have moved from one end of the USA to the orther with my Moggies by my side in 07 i moved from San Curz to Imperial valley 20 miles north of the US/Mexican board an all of my Moggies came with me there wore six new ones that I saved when I was living in San Curz that made the trip too all life has value the humans that abandon Orangey did not leave there kids behind I think these humans need to walk a mile or two in the paws of a abandon or forgotten cat doing so will change their minds an they will see the value of life not just human life the next time they bring a non-human life into there home. =^..^=
