Yeni salgın: Hayvanlar üzerinden ırkçılık!

Kimi zaman insanlar soruyor: Sana göre bu ülkenin en büyük sorunu ne?

Türkiye muhteşem bir yer. Her yerden zekâ, enerji ve gençlik dolup taşıyor. Son derece konuk sever harika insanlar. Burada olduğum için gerçekten çok mutluyum.

Yine de toplumdaki en endişe verici olgunun, bence, hangisi olduğunu söylemem gerekirse cevabım açık: Aşırı-milliyetçilik.

Aşırı-milliyetçilik ve yabancı düşmanlığı (ksenofobi) bu topraklarda doğmadı. Bu kavram insanoğlu kadar eski. Aşırı-milliyetçilik ve yabancı düşmanlığı, ilkel toplumlarda, toplumu işgalci yabancılardan korumak amacıyla oluştu/oluşturuldu (söyleniyor ya da tahmin ediliyor). Ancak sorun şu ki, bu kavram pratikte hiçbir zaman yürümedi. Toplumu güçlendirmesi gerekirken onu zayıflattı. Zayıflattı çünkü tanımı, toplumu oluşturan insanları kısıtlıyordu. Sonuçta aşırı-milliyetçi bu düşman görüşü benimseyen kişiler, toplumun en alt kademesinde, “öteki”ne karşı her daim bir nefret (ve korku) besleyerek marjinal bireyler olarak yaşamayı seçtiler. Ve yalnız ve yalnız kendi bakış açıları paylaşan kişilerle iletişim kurabildiler.

Aşırı-milliyetçilik bu ülkeye has bir olgu olmasa da, benim gördüğüm kadarıyla, yalnızca Türkiye ve Yunanistan’da var olan bir kavram var: “Yabancı düşmanı-ırkçı hayvan sever”

Türkiye’deki hayvan severlerden bir kısmının nasıl olup da böyle bir delilik seviyesine inebildiği beni aşıyor. Üzücü olan nokta şu ki, böyle bir kesim var. Nasıl olur da zavallı ve acı çeken bir sokak köpeğini aşırı-milliyetçi bir sembole dönüştürebilirsiniz?.. Gerçek ve tek amacı hayvan kurtarmak olan bir eğilimi/hareketi nasıl olur da hayvan ölülerinin başında aşırı-milliyetçi ağıtlar yakılan bir gösteriye dönüştürürsünüz?.. Bunlar beni kat be kat aşıyor.

Türkiye’deki “hayvan hareketi”nin arkasındaki karanlık sır işte bu. Sayıları hiç de azımsanamayacak rakamları bulan bu kişiler, içlerinde en ufak bir sevgi kırıntısı ya da yaşam hakkına saygı barındırmadan, yalnızca toplumda bir yer edinebilmek, bir “kesim”e ait olabilmek adına bu yola giriyorlar. Hayvanlara yardım etmek isteyenlerin büyük çoğunluğu, sevecen ve her zaman yardıma hazır harika insanlarla tanışıyor. Ancak birkaç talihsiz kişi, yanlış yola sapıp yanlış gruplarda kayboluyor: Bu gruplar nefret ve “öteki”ne duyulan korkuyla hareket ediyor. Öyle ki kendi kendine yetemeyen bu kişiler, aralarında canavar yabancıların Türk hayvanları üzerinden çıkar sağlamaları ve sokak köpeklerini Çin lokantalarına satmaları vs gibi komplo teorileri bile üretiyorlar. Bir komplo kuramcısının hayal gücü sınır tanımaz…

Bu hastalığın tedavisi yok. Ancak öyle görünüyor ki hastalık, aileleri tarafından kalıtsal olarak beyinlerine kazınan birkaç kişiden öteye de gitmiyor. Sorun şu ki, buradaki problem yalnızca genetik değil. Birkaç kişiyle sınırlı kalabilecek olan bu hastalık, Internet aracılığıyla bulaşıcı ve yaygın bir hal alıyor.

Yukarıda okuduğunuz yazının hiçbir bilimsel dayanağı yok. Tek kaynağı, yaklaşık yedi yıldır bu ülkede yaşamanın ve başta ve özellikle hayvanların refahı olmak üzere tüm ülke sorunlarını yakından takip etmemin bana öğrettikleri. Tam altı yıldır bu hasta beyinlerin içi boş saçma sapan komplo teorilerini dinliyorum. Kim olduklarını açıklamak isterdim ancak o kadar kalabalıklar ki!..

Sahip Çıkalım!.. ile neden bu kadar övündüğümü, gurur duyduğumu biliyor musunuz? Hepinizle gurur duyuyorum… Öncelikle kurtardığınız hayvanlar ve harika hikâyeleri ve ikinci olarak da toplumda geldiğimiz nokta için… Ancak gururumun en önemli ve ana nedeni, bu grubun beni sizler gibi insanlarla buluşturması ve her gün hayat kurtarıyor olmamız. Yalnız hayvan hayatından söz etmiyorum burada. Aynı zamanda, milliyeti bir “kriter” olarak görmeyen hayvan sahiplerini, Sahip Çıkalım!.. aracılığıyla, en büyük desteği alacağı hayvan dostlarıyla bir araya getiriyoruz. Sizler gibi insanlar…

İşte bu yüzden, Sahip Çıkalım!..’ın bugün dünyanın her köşesinden üyesi var. Sekiz ayrı ülkede aktif olarak hayat kurtarıyoruz (Sahip Çıkalım!.. Fransa dün kuruldu.) Türk-temelli hiçbir grup bu başarıya ulaşamadı ya da bu kadar kalabalık bir deha ve gönül grubu oluşturamadı.

İşte bu yüzden Sahip Çıkalım!..’ı seviyorum.

A new disease: Animal nationalism!

Sometimes people ask me: What do you see as the biggest problem of this country?

Turkey is a wonderful place, filled to the brim with bright, energetic, young things. Wonderful hospitable people. I truly love it here.

Still, when people ask me which one is, to me, the most worrying aspect of this society my answer is clear: ultra-nationalism.

Ultra-nationalism and xenophobia was not invented here, it is something as old as human beings. It developed in the early societies as a way to protect the group against invaders (supposedly or imaginary). The problem is, it never worked. Instead of making societies stronger it weakened them as by definition this attitude limits those who endorse it. As a result, those who sponsor ultra-nationalistic tend to live in the lowest echelons of society, marginalized individuals living in hate (and fear) of the outsider, and only being able to communicate with those who harbor their same views.

Whilst ultra-nationalism is not exclusive of this country, there is a movement which, to my knowledge, is exclusive of Turkey and Greece, and that is the “racist-xenophobic animal lover”.

How did a number of animal lovers in this country descended into such madness is beyond me. The sad fact is, they did. How can you turn an poor and suffering stray dog into an ultra-nationalistic symbol? How can twist the essence of the animal rescue movement to a point where around the dying corpses of animals you manage to scream ultra nationalist anthems is completely beyond me.

This is the dark secret of the turkish animal welfare movement. A great number of those who go into this cause do so no guided by love and respect for living creatures, but as a way to fit into society, to find their way into a group of people. The vast majority of those who reach out will find wonderful compassionate people, always willing to help, but a few unlucky ones will fall into the wrong groups, groups motivated by hate and fear of the foreigner, where a bunch of inadequate individuals exchange conspiracy theories about evil foreigners using Turkish animals for their own gain, selling stray dogs to Chinese restaurants, etc.. etc.. etc.. the imagination of a conspiracy theorist is endless…

There is no cure to this ill, as it seems to be a condition genetically engraved in the diminished brains of a few. The problem is, it is not only genetic, thanks to the internet, it has turned contagious, infectious.

What you have read is by no means supported by scientific evidence, it is merely the outcome of close to seven years of living and breathing the problems of this country, and in particular the issues related to animal welfare. Six years of listening to the mad ramblings of sick people and their conspiracy theories. I would love to give names, but there are so many of them…

You know why I am so proud of Let’s Adopt!? I’m proud of you all not only because of the amazing success stories, the animals saved, the influence we have achieved in this society, the main reason why I am so proud of this group has enabled me to find people like you, and because every day we are saving lives, not only animal lives, but the lives of those animal lovers who, through us, find a great support group of people for whom nationality doesn’t matter. People like you.

And this is why, today, Let’s Adopt! has members all over the world and officially operates in 8 countries (we launched Let’s Adopt (France) yesterday. No turkish-based animal group has achieved this feat, no turkish group has gathered such brilliant group of minds and hearts.

This is why I love Let’s Adopt!.

Sahip Çıkalım! son iki senedir, bitmez tükenmez bir gayretle üyelerini hayvan sahiplenme, kısırlaştırma ve hayvanlarla ilgili diğer konularda eğitmeye çalıştı.
Son iki senedir, hem Türkiye’de hem de yurt dışında, daha önce örneği görülmemiş, eşi benzeri olmayan bir bağlantılar ağı, her sorunu çözecek ilişkiler kurmaktayız. Bu süreç içinde, üyelerimizin inancı ve güvenini kazandık.
Ancak yine de başaramadığımız hissine kapılıyoruz.
İnsanlara en can alıcı kısmı anlatmayı başaramadık: SORUMLULUK

Başarısızlık riskini minimuma indirebilmek için Türkiye’de var olan en ağır sahiplenme kurallarını getirdik: Sahip Çıkalım! evinizde bir hayvan beslemediğiniz takdirde size bir başkasını vermeyecek. Sahip Çıkalım! hiçbir hayvanı bahçede ya da fabrika türü bir yerde bakılmak üzere sahiplendirmeyecek. Bu kurallar bizler için son derece iyi işlese de aslında kurtarabileceğimiz hayvan sayısını kısıtladı. Ancak bu kısıtlamaya rağmen, neredeyse % 100’e yakın bir başarı oranını da garantiledi.
Sorunlar beklentilerle başladı. Gerçek şu ki, son derece sert olan söylemimizin altında, aslında bizler oldukça yumuşak kalpli insanlarız ve bu nedenle, daha koyduğumuz ilk kural üzerinden beklentiye girdik… Hayvan sahiplenmek istediği sırada evinde herhangi bir hayvan beslemeyen “hayvan sever”lerin sözlerine inandık, bu insanların ne hayvanları ne de bizleri hayal kırıklığına uğratmayacaklarını düşündük.

Bu tür sahiplendirmelerin çoğu başarısızlıkla sonuçlandı… Yaşanan ekonomik kriz zaten zor olan yaşam koşullarını daha da zorlaştırdı ve bugün, hayvanları sahiplenirken “sonsuz bir sevgi ile sevecekleri” sözünü veren kişiler, bu hayvanları tekrar bizlerin sırtına yüklüyorlar. Hem de eşi benzeri görülmemiş bir oran ve hızla…
Bütün bunlar nedeniyle birtakım tedbirler almak zorunda kaldık:
1.    Sahip Çıkalım! bir daha ASLA “bir hayvan kuralı” konusunda istisna yapmayacak. İnsanlar hayvanı ne kadar isterse istesin, ne kadar söz verirse versin, bir daha asla istisnalar olmayacak.
2.    Sahip Çıkalım!, bugün itibariyle, yeni vakalar almayı kesmiştir. Şu anda bakımını üstlendiğimiz hayvanları sahiplendirmek için elimizden gelenin en iyisini yapacağız. Ancak hiçbir yeni hayvan alınmayacak.

3.    Sahip Çıkalım! sahiplendirmeye devam edecek ancak bütün kaynak ve gayretini yurt dışındaki ortak ağını geliştirmek/güçlendirmek ve hayvanları sahiplendirme başarımızın en basit ifadesiyle % 100 olduğu yurt dışında yuvalandırmaya odaklayacak.
Dolayısıyla, bugünden itibaren, yerel olarak sahiplendirme konusundaki yardım taleplerinizi yanıtlayamayacağız. Eğer içinizden biri, bir hayvan sahiplenmek isterse, lütfen bizi arayın. Sizin uygun bir sahip olacağınıza inanırsak, size yardıma muhtaç bir hayvan buluruz ancak son köpeğimizi de sahiplendirdikten sonra, bir daha yerel yuva arayışına girmeyeceğiz.

Bu, Sahip Çıkalım!’ın yuva arayışına son verdiği anlamına gelmiyor. Tam aksine, sahiplendirmeye devam edeceğiz, ancak çok daha seçici bir biçimde… En çaresiz vakaları tek tek seçeceğiz: Sakat köpekler, üç bacaklı hayvanları, körler… Bu hayvanları özenle seçecek ve onları yurt dışında sahiplendireceğiz. Bütün bunları hiçbir masraftan kaçınmadan yapacağız. Umuyoruz ki, bir gün Türkiye’de yaşayan hayvan severler ne yapmaya çalıştığımızı anlayacak ve adlarına yakışır bir şekilde davranacak: Evindeki koltuğa en çok uyacak köpeği (ki bu köpek sahibi için en ufak bir sorun yarattığında kapının önüne koyulacaktır) arayan kaprisli ve aptal insanlar yerine özverili hayvan severler olacaklar…

Bu yeni politika bizi daha da özgürleştirecek ve bu sayede BÜTÜN zaman ve kaynaklarımızı sorumlu insanların kendi başlarına halledebilecekleri konular yerine eğitime ayırabileceğiz. Toplumun “hayvan sever” kesimi birçok kademede eğitime muhtaç: Hayvanların davranış ve ihtiyaçları, kısırlaştırma ve diğer ahlaki konular…
Sahip Çıkalım! bu boşluğu doldurarak yoluna devam edecek…

Ears Before...

Dear Friends,

For the last two years Let’s Adopt has worked tirelessly to educate its members about adoption, sterilization and animal issues.
For two years we have been building an unprecedented network of connections, facilitating relationships, both within Turkey and overseas. In the process we have earned credibility and the trust of our members.
However we feel we have failed.
We have failed at instilling the most basic of the messages into people’s heads. Responsibility.
In order to reduce the chances of failure we set up the toughest adoption rules in Turkey. Let’s Adopt wouldnt give you an animal unless you currently had an animal at home, Let’s Adopt would not give any animals in adoption destined to be kept on a garden, or a factory. Those rules have worked very very well for us. True, it has limited the amount of animals we could save, but it ensured a nearly total success rate.

The problem came when we made exceptions. The truth is, under our tough retoric we are very soft-hearted people, we made expections to the first rule, we believed the words of “animal lovers” who didnt have an animal right then but who promised us they would never let their animals, and us, down.

In the vast majority of those those adoptions have failed… The economic crisis has made things tougher, and people who promised eternal love for their animals are now dumping their animals back on us at an unprecedented rate.

All of this forces us to take three measures:

1. Let’s Adopt will NEVER make another exception to the One animal rule. No matter how much those people want the animal, no matter how many promises, we wont make exceptions again. Never.

2. Let’s Adopt stops, as of today, to take up new cases. We will do our best to place the animals we currently have under our care, but no more new cases will be considered.

3. Let’s Adopt will continue rehoming but it will focus all its resources and efforts in strengthening its overseas partner network and rehoming our animals overseas, where our success rate is, simply put, 100%.

As of today we wont be able to answer your request of assistance with new cases to be rehomed locally. If any of you wants to adopt an animal by any means call us and, if we believe you are suitable well find an animal in need for you but after we have placed our last dog we wont be seeking local adoptions any longer.

This, does not mean Let’s Adopt will stop rehoming, not at all. We will continue doing so but in an even more selective way. We will be handpicking the most desperate cases, the handicapped animals, the three legged, the blind ones, and will rehome them overseas. We will be doing so regardless the expense in the hope that one day, the “animal lovers” of Turkey will have understood what we are trying to do and will live up to their name becoming just that, selfless animal lovers instead of capricious silly people looking for the cutest dog to match their leather sofa. Dogs that will be dumped the moment they have the slightest personal problem.

This new direction will allow us to be freer and to dedicate ALL our time and resources to education instead of having to deal with issues that responsible people should be able to deal with on their own. The “animal loving” community is in desperate need of education at multiple levels, animal behavior and needs, animal nutrition, even moral issues… Let’s Adopt! will continue providing just that.

Simba RIP

Lara Hakkında Gelişmeler!!!!

Kötü haber… Gerçekten kötü haber…

Lara’nın durumu çok ama çok kötü. Kemoterapiyle tedavi edilebilmek için çok büyük bir rahim tümörü var. Ameliyat edilmesi gerekiyor.

Bunun dışında meme tümörleri de var ameliyatla alınması gereken. Tüm bunlar onu 1,5 yıldır hapseden “hayvansever” bir veterinere götürmüş olsaydı önlenebilirdi.

Bu mesaj evinde dişi köpeği olan ve saçma sapan “ahlaki” sebeplerle köpeğini kısırlaştırmayan herkese; kısırlaştıramayan dişi köpeklerde meme ve rahim tümörü gelişme şansı çok yüksek, ve bu olasılık köpeğin ilk yıl içinde kısırlaştırılmasıyla neredeyse sıfıra düşüyor. İlk yıldan sonra kanser riski büyüyerek artıyor.

Bu, sevdiklerini kanser yüzünden kaybedenlerin öğrenmek zorunda kaldığı bir ders. Ben de çok iyi öğrendim. Kendi köpeğim Simba
kanserden öldü. Onu 14 yaşındayken kurtarmıştım, önceki sahibi kısırlaştırmayı aklına getirmemişti.

Hayvanlarınızı kısırlaştırın… Lütfen… Bu hayvan nüfusunun artmasını önlemek ve kanser riskini yok etmek için tek yol.

Tekrarlıyorum, dişileri kısırlaştırın… Lütfen… Lara’nın çağrısından bir ders alalım.

Simba RIP

An update on Lara,

Bad news… very bad news…

Lara’s situation is very very difficult.
She has a massive ovarian tumor that is too big to deal with chemotherapy. We will need to operate.

She also has mammary tumors that will need to be operated.

All of this could have been avoided had the “animal lover” taken her to the vet during the last year and a half of imprisonment.

Here is a message to all of you who have female dogs at home and refused to neuter them based on ridiculous moral reasons. The
incidence of mamary and ovarian tumors on unneutered bitches is massive, and it can be reduced to practically zero by sterilizing the animal during the first year of age. After that the statistical rate of incidence of cancer increases exponentially after time passes.

This is a lesson learned the hard way by all of those who have lost their loved ones due to cancer. I know this very well. My own dog,
Simba, died of cancer. I rescued her when she was 14 year old, her previous owner didn’t care enough to do it.

Sterilize your animals.. please… it is the only way to avoid the tragedy of pet overpopulation AND to eliminate the risk of cancer for
your loved ones..

I repeat. Sterilize your females… please.. let’s learn a lesson from Lara’s plea.

Okumaya başlamadan önce size şunu söyleyeyim, Bu iletinin sonunda size yazdıklarımı Facebook sayfanızda paylaşmanızı ve Türkiye’de veya yurtdışında tanıdığınız tüm ‘hayvanseverler’e göndermenizi isteyeceğim. Aklımda bütün ‘hayvanseverler’ varken yazıyorum bu satırları. Hepiniz mutlaka okumalısınız.

50 santimetre…

Ellerinizi öne doğru, başparmaklarınız birbirine bakacak şekilde uzatın, sanki birisini kucaklayacakmış gibi kollarınızı açın. Bu aralık yaklaşık 50 santimetre…

50 santimetre Lara’nın san bir buçuk yılda bildiği tek yerdi.

Lara, yaşlı bir cocker. Yaklaşık 1,5 yıl önce bir ‘hayvansever’ tarafından kurtarıldı, ki adını aşağıda açıklayacağım nedenlerle vermiyoruz.

Bu kişi köpeği evine götürdü. Ancak maalesef eve gidince farketti ki dairesinde 20 kedisi vardı ve komşuları bu son gelen hayvan yüzünden problem çıkaracaklardı. Zor bir durumdaydı. Köpeği bir barınağa götürmek istemiyordu çünkü köpek toplama kampı olan barınaklarda hayvanların ne korkunç koşullarda yaşadıklarının farkındaydı. Köpekciğe bir ev bulmaya çalıştı ancak başarılı olamadı. Kimse yaşlı bir köpek istemiyordu. Çocuğu bir garaja verdi, onlar da bir-iki gün sonra geri getirdiler.’Hayvansever’ arkadaşları ona yardımcı olmadı. ‘Hayvansever Dernekler’ çağrılarına ve mesajlarına yanıt vermediler…

Ve, o anda Lara’nın ve kendi hayatını sonsuza kadar etkileyecek bir karar verdi. Köpekle birlikte caddedeki arabasına gitti, bagajı açtı ve içerdekileri biraz kenara itti, köpeğe yer hazırladı ve Lara’yı bagaja koydu. Sonra bagajın kapısını kapattı  ve Lara’yı orada bıraktı, karanlıkta, yapayalnız.

Dediğine göre sadece bir geceliğine bırakmak istemişti… sonunda bu işkence tam 1,5 yıl sürdü. Tam bir buçuk yıl… 550 gün, 550 gece. Yaz, kış, bunaltıcı sıcak ve donduran soğuk… Ve yalnızlık…

Gördüğünüz fotoğraflar Lara’nın 1,5 yıl içindeki ilk doğru dürüst yürüyüşünde çekildi, bugün öğleden sonra…
Bu kurtarma operasyonu için, kalbimin en derin köşesinden Sahip Çıkalım! üyesi, müthiş bir gönüllü ve iyilik ve şefkatle dolu bir insan evladı olan arkadaşımıza teşekkür ediyorum. Lara bugün kurtulduysa onun yorulmak bilmeyen çabaları sayesindedir. Gerçek kahramanımız O’dur.

İnsanlarla hayvanlar arasındaki en büyük problem empati yoksunluğu. Hayvanseverler empatileriyle gurur duyarlar. Oysa hiç bir şey gerçekten bu denli uzak olamaz.

Sahip Çıkalım! iki yıl önce kurulduğu günden beri hayvanseverlerin ‘sevgi’ uğruna yaptıkları işkencelere tanıklık ettik, Hayatları boyunca kuş kafeslerine hapsedilmiş köpekler gördük, ağaçlara zincirlenmiş köpekler gördük, yere bağlanmış köpekler gördük, bodrumlarda gün ışığı görmeden yaşamış canlar gördük, hayvanseverlerin yüzlerce ‘kurtarılmış’ hayvanı, sağlık güvencesi olmayan, kışırlaştırılmamış 1500 hayvanla İstanbul’un ormanlarının bir köşesinde yaşayan bir adama sırf vicdanlarını rahatlatmak için terk ettiklerini gördük.

Bu insanlar kendilerini ‘hayvansever’ olarak takdim ediyorlar.

Ne zaman “Ben bir hayvanseverim…” diye başlayan bir ileti alsam korkudan titremeye başlıyorum.

Çoğunlukla gelen iletinin içeriği dudak uçuklatan cinsten. Hayvanların gereksinim ve doğalarından tamamen habersiz ve uzak… Hayatım boyunca daha cahil ve mantıksız bir grup insanla daha karşılaşmadım. Elbette istisnalar var, ama genelde hayvanseverlerle ilgili düşüncelerim daha kötü olamaz. Ve bu “bir defaya mahsus” olaylarla bağlantılı bir yargı değil. Sahip Çıkalım! her gün bu tür olaylarla başetmek zorunda kalıyor.

Son birkaç gün içinde Facebook’ta Lara’nın bir arabanın bagajında yaşadığıyla ilgili bir takım söylentiler dolaşıyordu. Günlerce kimse hiçbirşey yapmadı. Sonra, dün iki hayvansever durumu kendi gözleriyle görmek üzere gidip Lara’yı gördüler, sahibiyle tanıştılar, arabayı gördüler, yaşam koşullarını gördüler, fotoğraflar çektiler… VE hayvanı orada bıraktılar! Sonra, dünyanın her yerinde ‘hayvanseverler’in en iyi yaptığı şeyi yaptılar; bilgisayarlarının başına geçtiler, fotoğrafları yüklediler, ve bağırmaya başladılar… bağırmak, dilekçeler imzalamak, ve sonunda hiç birşey yapmamak…

Bu sabah yaşlı köpeğin hikayesini ve fotoğraflarını aldım. Önce inanamadım, ama yine de gönüllülerimizden birisinden gidip bakmasını rica ettim. Herşey gerçekti.

Lara

Köpeği veteriner hekimimize götürdük. işte Lara’nın konulan tanılar:

- Lara’da ileri derecede dehidrasyon var (susuzluk). Derisi zımpara kağıdı gibi. Bunun sebebi de bunca zaman  susuz ve vitaminsiz kalmış olması. 1,5 yıl boyunca karanlık bir bagajda yaşamanın sonu bu.

- Lara kör… Bu zaman içinde tamamen karanlıkta yaşamış olması bu durumun daha da kötüye gitmesine neden olmuş.

- Lara kanser hastası. Normal bir evde yaşıyor olsaydı tedavi olabilecekken kimse Lara’nın kanser hastası olduğunun farkına bile varmadı. Vücudunun çeşitli yerlerinde büyümekte olan tümörler ve memelerinde carcinoma var.

- Tahlillere devam ediyoruz ancak kanserin metastas yapmış olabileceğinden şüphe ediyoruz.

Bu “hayvansever” iyilik yapmak istedi. Ancak mantığındaki eksiklik ve yersiz korkuları onu en kötü işkenceciden beter duruma düşürdü,

“Hayvansever” olmak bu zulmü affettirmez. Allah onu affetsin, Allah hepimizi affetsin.

Cuma gecesi… Ülkenin en büyük gazetelerinden birisini okuyorum. 80 yaşında bir teyze Erzurum’da, güneşin altında, torunu tarafından arabaya kilitlenip unutulmuş.

Canavarlar… Etrafımız canavarlarla dolu…

Before you start reading let me tell you, at the end of this post I will ask you all to share this on your facebook pages and to forward it to every single “animal lover” you know, in Turkey, or overseas. I am writing with every single “animal lover” in mind. You all need to read this.

I want you all to extend your hands in front of you… with you thumbs facing each other and the hands fully opened. That is approximately, 50 cms.

50 cms was all the space Lara knew during the last year and a half of her life.

Lara

Lara is an old cocker. About a year and a half ago she was “rescued” by an animal lover, we will not disclose her name for reasons I will explain later.

That person took the dog home. Unfortunately when she got home she realized that her apartment was already occupied by 20 cats and that her neighbors created problems at her having another animal.  At that moment she found herself in a difficult situation. She didnt want to take Lara to a shelter because she knew dogs live in horrendous conditions in those hellish prison camps for dogs. She tried to find a home for the dog but she was unsuccessful. Nobody wants a old dog. She gave the dog to a garage but she was returned a couple of days later.

Her animal lover friends didn’t help her. Animal Organizations didnt’ return her emails, or calls.

So, at that moment that person took a decision that would forever mark Lara’s life, and hers. She and the dog went to street where her car was parked, opened the trunk of the car, moved some of the stuff around, made a little space and put the dog there. She then closed the trunk, leaving Lara inside the trunk, alone, in darkness.

She apparently intended to leave the dog for a night only… in the end, the torture lasted one and a half years. One and a half years…

550 days… and nights. Summer, winter, asphixiating hear, freezing cold. And loneliness…

The pictures you see here are the pictures from her first proper walk in 1,5 years, today, in the afternoon. For his amazing rescue story I would like to thank from the very bottom of my heart a wonderful Let’s Adopt! member, a great volunteer and a kind and compassionate human being. It was because of her tireless efforts Lara is saved today. She is the real hero here.

The biggest problem of the relationship between humans and animals is lack of empathy. Animal lovers pride themselves in their empathic abilities. Nothing further from the truth.

In the last two years, since the inception of Let’s Adopt!, we have seen some of the most horrendous torture being commited by “animal lovers” for love. We have seen dogs kept on bird cages during their entire lives, we have seen dogs chained to trees, closed in garages, tied to a hook on the floor, stuck in basement rooms for decades, we have seen animal lovers kill their rescues through improper care, we have seen animal lovers clean their consciences by dumping dogs by the hundreds on to a hidden corner of the Istanbul forest where someone lives with over 1.500 dogs, unneutered, lacking any kind of veterinary care.

Those people introduced themselves as “animal lovers”. I shake in fear whenever I receive an email starting with the following words: “I am an animal lover”…

Most of the times the content of that email is truly hairrising… complete and utter ignorance of the true nature of animals and their needs. In my entire life I have never met a more uneducated and illogical group of people. There are of course some exceptions, but onthe whole my perception of animal lovers just couldn’t be worse. And this is not a perception based on one-off situations…  Let’s Adopt! is forced to witness, and solve, those disasters, on a daily basis.

For the last few days rumors spread on Facebook about the existence of Lara, living alone inside the trunk of a car. For days nobody did anything. Then, yesterday, a couple of animal lovers went to check the situation by themselves, met the dog, the owner, saw the car, the living conditions, took some pictures AND… left the dog behind. And then they did what animal lovers tend to do around the world.. they go onto their computers, upload the pictures, and scream…scream, sign petitions and do nothing.

This morning I received a picture of an old dog and a story. At first I couldnt believe it but I asked one of our volunteers to check it out.

It was true.

We did what we always do. We rescued the dog. We took action. We saved a life.

We took the dog to our vet. Here is Lara’s diagnosis:
- Lara is severely dehydrated. Her skin is like sand paper. This happens because of the lack of sufficient hydration and lack of
vitamins. This happens when you live in total darkness for a year and a half.
- Lara is blind. Her condition has surely worsened by the lack of light during this period.
- Lara has cancer. What could have surely been treated had she been in a normal home went undetected. There are a number of tumors growing all around her body and she has carcinoma in her mamary region.
- We are conducting further analysis but we suspect cancer has metastasized.

The “animal lover” meant well.. but her lack of logic, combined with her irrational fears turned her into a torturer of the worst kind.

To be an “animal lover” is no excuse for this monstrosity. May God forgive her. May God forgive us all.

It is Friday night, Im just reading one of the nations largest newspapers.. an 80 year old woman has been “forgotten”, locked up, in
a car, by her grandson, under the sun in Erzurum.

Monsters… we are surrounded by monsters.

Before you start reading let me tell you this post will raise a storm amongst the Turkish animal welfare community. If by the time you have finished reading you relate to it please forward it to all animal lovers you may have on your friendslist.

Why is this post important? Because it marks the beginning of a new system. Because it is the proof that the current adoption systems in Turkish shelters doesn’t work. Its a sham. A number of people in those shelters, far from being animal lovers they have just become glorified hoarders, and people for whom animal protection is nothing but a power game, a game of control over the lives of innocent animals.

When Let’s Adopt was founded two years ago it was our intention to help the different shelters in Istanbul to rehome their animals in desperate need. However, it soon became obvious that this would not be possible. Let’s Adopt introduced a new system, a completely different set of values, a challenge of the status quo, and the old guard, the volonteers that treated those poor animals in shelters like their own “prisoners of war” didn’t like it. Every time we offered our help in rehoming three legged animals, blind animals, dogs and cats in desperate situation our offers of help were refused. Reasons? God only knows… No matter how much we tried to show them our completely transparent system those people wouldnt listen… and at times they even became violent.

We then changed our approach.

For the last 2 years volunteers of Let’s Adopt have been visiting Istanbul’s shelters and rescuing dogs in desperate condition. You can watch some of them in the following link, there are many many more. Those dogs were inmediately taken to our approved clinics for emergency treatments, in many cases they were in need of surgeries, in the case of broken bones they were sometimes flown to Europe for life saving operations.  The vast majority of cases though those dogs were rehomed amongst our closest volonteers, a very special group of people who would do anything to save a life. I wont mention any names, they all know who they are, the list would be too long anyway….

We have rescued scores of dogs from shelters like Uskudar (run by Asude Ustaoglu), Gurpinar (Sema Mandev), and many many others, Izmir, Ankara, Bolu, Adana… special pleasure it gives us every time we rescue a dog from the infamous Haykod shelter in Ankara. Each and everyone of those animals lives a perfect life in a perfect home in Istanbul, surrounded by REAL animal lovers, not just glorified hoarders in search of some sense to their lifes.

We never said anything about those rescues… why? Because we focussed on saving animals and in showing others how to do so.

We would like to give four pieces of advice to the volunteers of those shelters, specially those in charge of adoptions:

1. The single most important factor for the success of an adoption is NOT the proof of address, it is the character of the adoptant. In other words, before you give a dog to anyone make sure that person understands what it is to have a dog. This sounds like simple advice. The vast majority of cases those adoption “officers” are the worst evaluators of character we have ever met.

2. You have a sacred responsibility to improve the health conditions of the animals under your care. Fulfill it. You would be shocked at the amount of animals with Parvo we have rescued from those abject shelters. We managed to save all of them thanks to having at our disposal the most advanced treatments available, and when they were not available we imported them from overseas, regardless of the cost. Countless lives have been saved this way.

3. NEVER give dogs to people who plan to use them as security guards or to hunters. Those animals end up paying your decision with their lives.

Finally…

4. Accept offers of help from organizations such as ours. The unfortunate animals that fell under your care do not belong to you. Your obligation is to protect them. The moment you fail to fulfill that obligation it is your moral responsibility to accept help from others.

Those pictures are proof that the system on those shelters doesnt work and needs serious improvement. Our suggestion to the management of those shelters would be to inmediately reorganize their rehoming procedures and to check on the current state of the animals they gave in adoption. They are up for a surprise, as we are convinced a great number of those animals have been left in other shelters, or worst.

Finally,and very important, Let’s Adopt could not perform its life saving operations without the assistance of our volonteers. To them I must humbly thank for their support whilst encouraging all our other members to get involved in our work not only by asking for help but by offering your help to us.

In the hope that one day, “animal lovers” involved in shelter work start acting as such instead of “jail masters”…
