Mübarek gecenin karanlığındaki çığlıklar – Screams in the darkness of the holy night

Düne kadar İstanbul’un Fatih Camii bahçesindeki durum ülkemizdeki insanlığın en iyi ve en kötü yüzünü bir arada sergiliyordu.

Bir taraftan yüzlerce iyi kalpli insan, gönüllüler bu yüce caminin kedi ve kediciklerine ellerinden geldiği kadar bakar, yiyecek ve su sağlar, sağlık ihtiyaçlarını (çok yetemeseler de) karşılar, güçlerinin yettiği kadarını kısırlaştırıken öte yandan Belediye 5199 sayılı Hayvanları Koruma Kanununa göre üstlenmeleri gereken sokak hayvanalrını kışırlaştırıp, aşılatıp yerlerine bırakmak görevini bile yerine getirmedi. Oysa bu sokak hayvanlarının çoğalmasını önlemenin TEK YASAL VE ETKİN YÖNTEMİ.

Dün gece, kutsal ay Ramazan’ın başlarındaki bu günlerde, dünyanın en yüce camilerinden birinin kutsal topraklarında, önce İstanbul’u sonra da sevgisiyle gönülleri fetheden Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in adını taşıyan bu semtte ve bu caminin bahçesinde korkunç bir suç işlendi.
Gecenin bir yarısında, karanlıkların arasından karnında  iftar yemeğinin artıklarını taşıyan güçlü kuvvatli işçiler kendilerine en kolay avları seçtiler. Onlarca, belki de yüzlerce, kimisi sadece birkaç günlük, annesinin memesine yapışmış, gözleri kapalı bebek kedi, vahşice toplandı, plastik torbalara dolduruldu ve bilinmez bir yerlere atıldı.
Tahminlerimiz bu işçilerin çok uzağa gitmediği yönünde. Çünkü, bu tür durumlarda genel yöntem canlı hayvanlarla dolu torbaların doğrudan çöp kamyonlarına atılmasıdır.
Belediyelerin sokak hayvanlarına karşı tutumu vahşetiyle ün salmıştır. Türkiye’deki hayvanseverler çöp kamyonlarının arkasında ezilerek can veren köpeklerin çığlıklarını kulaklarından silemezler. O ses hep oradadır, ülkemizin “görüntü ve sesler”inin bir parçası olarak izler bizi..
Dün gece kutsal bir mekanda işlenmiş olan bu suç ise konuşulamayacak kadar korkunçtur.
Fatih Belediye Başkanı 25 Ağustos’ta gururla yaptığı açıklamada Sultanahmet Meydanı’nın geleneksel Ramazan eğlencelerinin en renkli merkezi olacağını duyurmuştu. Meydandaki etkinlikler “Ramazan’a Merhaba” temasıyla düzenlenecekti.

26 Ağustos gecesi ise Fatih, yüzlerce kediciğe ve dünyanın dört bir yanındaki insana unutamayacakları bir eğlence sundu.

Onlara bu barbarca yöntemlerin geçmişe ait olduğu söyleyin. Onlara belirtin ki bu tür eylemler yüzünden Batı’da insanlar bizi babar bir millet olarak görüyor. Onlara, bu ülkenin insancıl yüzünü ve Türklerin masum yavru kedi ve köpekleri öldüren bir millet olmadığını dünyaya göstermenin onların görev ve sorumlulukları olduğunu hatırlatın.

Onlardan dünyaya gercek yüzümüzü gösterebilmek için yardım isteyin.

Cats of the Fatih Mosque

Until yesterday the grounds of the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, represented the best and the worst of humanity of what this country has to offer.
On one hand hundreds of kind people and volunteers fed and cared for this grand mosque’s  cats and kittens as best as they could. They provided food and water, did their best (although it was never enough) to provide them with basic medical care, spayed and neuter urgent cases when they could afford it.
On the other side the Municipality failed to fulfill its obligation to comply with the Animal Welfare Law 5199 that states that all stray animals must be collected, neutered AND returned to the place where they came from. This is THE ONLY LEGAL AND EFFECTIVE WAY to deal with stray animal overpopulation.

Yesterday night, in the beginning days of the Holy Month of Ramadan, in the holy grounds of one of the worlds largest mosques, one carrying the name of the Sultan who first conquered Istanbul then the hearts with his love, a most hideous crime was carried out.
In the middle of the night, under the cover of the shadows, a team of workers, strong men, with their bellies still filled with their iftar dinner, went around the grounds of the mosque selecting the easiest prey, the kittens. Tens, possibly hundreds of small kittens, some of them barely days old, eyes still closed, still feeding from their mother cats, were brutally collected, dumped in plastic bags and thrown in far away locations.
Our guess is that those brutal workers did not drive too far. The usual practice shown by a multitude of evidence, is to throw the animals alive on garbage trucks.
Municipalities’ treatment of stray animals is legendary in its brutality. The cries of dogs being crushed alive by garbage trucks resonates in the minds of any Turkish animal lover. It is always there, reminding us of the “Sights and Sounds” of our country.
The crime commited yesterday night, on holy grounds, is unspeakable.
On the 25 of August, the Mayor of Fatih, Mustafa Demir, proudly announced that Sultanahmet Square will be the city’s most colorful center of traditional Ramadan entertainment. Events at the square will run under the theme “Hello to Ramadan in Sultanahmet.”

The Night of the 26 of August,  Fatih provided hundred of cats and millions of people around the world with the kind of entertainment it will be difficult to forget.
A brutal spectacle, the cowardly killing of innocent kittens.
Denounce it. Scream. YOU have the power to force the reversal of such brutal policies.

Show them that this barbaric policies belong in the past.. Tell them that it is because of this actions that many people in the West view us as a barbaric nation. Tell them that it is their responsibility and duty to show the world the humane side of this country, and that, Turks are not killers of innocent and helpless puppies and kittens.

Ask them to help you show our real side to the world.
