Sookie… Umut var.

Son üç gündür hepimiz üzüntü, çaresizlik ve kızgınlıkla doluyuz. Bugün size umut getirmek istiyorum, küçük, siyah beyaz, kırma, ırk
meraklılarının dikkatini asla çekmeyecek bir köpekçik. Adını Sookie koyduk. Sookie cehennemden kurtuldu.

Safkan Golden
Retriever’larla dolu hayvan hakkı savunucuları toplantılarını ikiyüzlü buluyorum. Gülünesi bir durum.

Neyse, işte Sookie… dünyanın en şanslı köpeklerinden biri.

Lütfen Bahçeşehir Barınağından kurtulan bir köpeği Yedikule, Bakırköy veya SHKD Kemerburgaz barınaklarından birine giderek sahiplenin.

Lütfen Sookie’nin hikayesini sayfalarınıza, Facebook’a taşıyın, bu iletiyi başkalarına yönlendirin, Friendfeed’de paylaşın.

Sookie Türkiye’deki sokak hayvanları için umudu temsil ediyor.

Sookie… there is hope.

The last three days have been filled with sadness, desperation, anger.. today Im bringing hope to you, hope in the shape of a small
black and white dog, a mix breed, completely unremarkable to those who are obsessed about breeds. We called her Sookie. Sookie is a survivor from Hell, through sheer determination and courage she managed to stay alive during the flood of the Bahcesehir shelter.

Yesterday I went to SHKD, one of the shelters that has helped in hosting the surviving dogs and got her out.

36 hours ago she was living in Hell… today she is in Heaven, living in a foster home, a young family and a dogie friend.

Sookie is an example to all animal lovers. It can be done!. There should be no dog in a shelter in Turkey. Animal lovers should lead by
example and adopt one of those beautiful animals. I will never understand animal lovers who are “breed specific”.. I find completely
hypocritical to see gatherings of animal activists filled with pure breed golden retrievers. Its ridiculous..

Anyway, here is Sookie… one of the luckiest dogs in the entire world.

Please adopt one of the surviving dogs of the Bahcesehir shelter from the Yedikule, Bakirkoy or SHKD Kemerbugaz shelter.

Please share Sookie’s story on your homepages, Facebook, forward this email, share this story on Friendfeed.

Sookie represents hope to the stray animals in Turkey.

  2. I agree about the purebred thing. However, note that many purebreds may also have been rescued.

In the U.S., I volunteered one day a week at the public shelter, where half the dogs were purebreds. I also volunteered for Border Collie rescue. There are hundreds of homeless Border Collies in foster care in America, as you can see on http://www.petfinder.com. As far as I’m concerned, if somebody has a breed preference and can give a home to a homeless purebred, why not?

My main hobby is sheep herding, so I need dogs that are interested in working with sheep. I had three Border Collies in America: one from a breeder, one from a shelter, one from a puppy-mill raid. They all competed in a half dozen sports and went to a training club daily. (The two youngest are with friends in America, still competing in agility and sheep herding every weekend. One is the state sheep herding champion.)

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that you can’t assume that purebreds at a rally are pet shop dogs. Especially in America, many purebreds were adopted from shelters. My purebred puppy-mill rescue was found in a cage with 5 dead litter-mates who had been starved to death. (His father was also starved to death). He was loaded with disease and parasites, and just as needy as any of the dogs at the shelters here in Turkey… But whatever people get–purebred or mixed–please ADOPT, don’t buy!

  3. Hello everyone,
First of all I have to thank everyone who was helping our dogs, who went to the shelters. I was informed only yesterday through a mail about the situation, then I watched it in the news and read Victors mails.
I think we have to be more organized as animal lovers, we have to be under one roof, be in touch all the time, have our phone numbers in case of emergency and act as a team when needed like in situations like these. This should be a lesson for us all. Why not start an AKUT team (arama kurtarma ekibi) for animals??? I believe that there are many animal lovers who will want to take part in a project like this. We can find people who can train us maybe, so we know how to act and what not to do while trying to be helpfull.
What do you say Victor? Lets start this ASAP.

  4. Erin Peffley says:

Because I have severe allergies, the Bichon Frise and its cousins, the Maltese and Coton de Tulear, are the only dogs with whom I can live and also breathe. For medical reasons, I am unable to take antihistamines, which might allow me a wider choice. If it were not for the Bichon Frise and its cousins (I am allergic even to Poodles) I would have to live entirely without dogs, and my life would be empty and miserable.

There are many, many breed-specific rescue organizations in the United States. These groups understand the specific personality and health requirements of their chosen breeds. Ours, specifically, will foster Bichon Frise, Coton de Tulear, Maltese, AND mixes of those breeds: Bichon/Terrier, for instance.

When our rescue organization receives word of a dog in need whose breed is not one we can foster, we forward his/her information to other rescue organizations who can foster that breed, or who are able to foster mixed breeds. We aid them in the best way we can.

Please do not be impatient with us, Viktor: We do the best we can, given our physical limitations. Our passion for animals is as deep, though our exposure to them cannot be as wide, as yours.

With prayers for all the survivors of the flood in Istanbul,

    Erin Peffley

I am so happy to read this about Sookie and I hope , all dogs will find a good home !

  6. “I will never understand animal lovers who are “breed specific”.. I find completely
hypocritical to see gatherings of animal activists filled with pure breed golden retrievers. Its ridiculous..”
Viktor I know these sentences are for my friend asking for a purebred retriever. I was angry to you as you act very suspicious about him but now i know some people may change your thought on matter. It is very nice to hear people have reasons to have purebreds. I would like to thank Erin and Sharon that are very nice guys explaining us why people think it is necessary to have purebreds for a reason. We have to think twice when it seems choices of owners are ridiculous. Purebreds are also born and need safe places to live.
We all love animals and you know i am against paying for them.

  7. I really don’t want to be an overprotective of anyone else. These are my beliefs on subject. Think pozitive 🙂

  8. Christine says:

I have to agree with Viktor in the case of these goldens in turkey. The situation in the US can not be compared to that of Turkey. A short story to explain my feelings on this issue. I foster street dogs here in Izmir. Recently two, now homed in the US, lived in my home for a few months prior to transfer. These two dogs caused more problems then six hours of writing could explain. While my 58 kilo boxer was more than welcome, being a purebred. The ones making the most noise here in my village own goldens, the dog of the hour in turkey. While I agree all dogs need a home, I, like Viktor, find it disgusting that so many in turkey accept any number of purebreds in their village whilst throwing stones and killing off any stray that comes near! In the US, my family like many others have strays and purebreds, that is not the case in turkey. There are over 2000 members in lets adopt but you would never know the number were so high by the low number of adoptions. So on this one, I am completely siding with Viktor. Of course this excludes those who need to have a certain type of dog for health reasons, but shame oh shame on those who turn their backs on mixed breeds so that their ego’s can be satisfied with the breed of the hour!

  9. QUOTE: “I will never understand animal lovers who are “breed specific”.. I find completely
hypocritical to see gatherings of animal activists filled with pure breed golden retrievers. Its ridiculous..”
Viktor I agree completely with you, you are SO right!!!!!!!!!

  10. Erin Peffley says:

It is my dream to build a huge, beautiful, clean shelter with a 24-hour veterinary staff, a 24-hour caregiving staff, and homelike rooms for the animals to live in (unless their health required veterinary hospital conditions). It would welcome stray and surrendered animals of every breed, any age, and any health status. It would also have a great air-filtering system so that I could go there and still breathe, LOL! Seriously, I hope someday to make this dream a reality.

  11. Sookie is one lucky sweet dog. I wish her well and hope she is much loved.

  12. Ezgi Yemenicioğlu Negir says:

    Merhaba,
