It was a dark night when stray boy Lucky got hit by a car on a lonely road. By all accounts that would have been his last moment.
For some unfathomable reason however fate would not have it that way, and seconds after the hapless stray was flung from one lane onto the neighboring one, another driver saw him. Something in the position of the crumpled little body gave the man hope that the cat could still be alive.
He immediately pulled over and ran to the animal. It was at that precise moment that Lucky received two great gifts — a name and a chance to live.
The rescuer rushed Lucky to a veterinary clinic where he was found to be in shock, fractures to his skull and jaw; unseeing, with fully dilated pupils, possible brain edema, pulmonary contusion (bruising of the lungs) and a damaged front leg. Urgent work started on stabilizing the boy and evaluating his injuries. The jaw was immediately immobilized and a gastrostomy tube was inserted to keep him nourished. Lucky is on intravenous therapy, receiving antibiotics, hydration and pain medication. He will need a CT scan for the multiple fractures to be correctly observed and the right surgical approaches to be planned.
As we worked on preparing Lucky’s photos, story, and everything else required to share with you, we made a mental note to change his name. Lucky has got be to one of the most common rescue names, so we mused that the sweet boy could benefit from a more interesting one.
On second thought however we decided not to touch Lucky’s name — a precious gift made by a kind human at an unseen crossroad where life and death both fought for the same soul.

It has now been a few months since Lucky’s rescue.
The surgeries were successful, our boy has long left the clinic and has been spending time in a cozy foster home. The bandages are off, his jaw is completely healed, he eats on his own and has probably even forgotten what happened to him.
His leg however is not doing so well.
We gave the leg all the time in the world to recover but it is now obvious that it must be amputated. It has not responded to any of the tests the vet team has subjected it to, and it just gets in the way of Lucky walking and running.
