THE ANSWER

Never. We are starting this story by directly providing the answer — because it is Friday, because the last seconds of a precious life are trickling away, and we only have this chance to touch and engage you to join us in the fight.

While there is hope you should never give up trying to save a life.

This is exactly what a handful of incredible people did this week, amazing and inspiring us.

THE IMPOSSIBLE RESCUE

When we noticed a plea for help with catching a badly injured stray cat, little could we imagine the extent of the injuries the furkid had suffered. There were no photos, just the desperate words of a couple of kind people, trying again and again, and failing to trap her. We got in touch, discussed approaches, offered help and a humane trap — only to discover they already had everything needed and were following all the right procedures. We promised to consider assistance if the cat is captured and waited.

We admit that we did not believe in their success. Trapping an injured stray cat, who does not want to be caught, is incredibly difficult, bordering on impossible. It requires levels of dedication, unfamiliar and impossible for most people. It requires keeping the fragile hope of success alive, nursing it while you endlessly traverse freezing streets, search abandoned basements, and crawl through spider-infested shafts and vents. It requires tracking the cat so you discover her home and learn her routine in order to best position the trap, and then it requires waiting. Waiting for hours and hours on site while hoping that the trap will catch not one of the tens of other stray cats in the neighborhood — but your injured stray cat, the one you want to rescue, the one blinded by panic and pain — the one which is ten times more cautious than any other cat.

If you have never attempted to trap a cat in a similar situation you will have trouble imagining such desperation, and you will have to simply believe our words.

Despite everything they did. The handful of special people who dedicated their lives during the last week to save another, succeeded.

SERDICA

Serdica was immediately admitted to a veterinary clinic in shock, with huge lacerations and fractures in her one front leg, massive infection and on the brink of life. Amputation of the leg which cannot be saved is scheduled, which the vet team is hoping will control the infection.

Dear friends, our work is not solely to rescue animals. We also aim to motivate people to do what is right, to do good — because those are two ingredients of the recipe for a better future for all of us. The refusal of Serdica’s rescuers to accept defeat, to retreat to their warm homes and turn their back on a precious life is remarkable and deserves utmost respect. Today we ask you to help us support and inspire them in return and save a life together.

Please donate today towards Serdica’s rescue and treatment fund and share her story.
