“You have 20 minutes to decide if you want to save her.” These were the words we heard this afternoon when we answered a call from our clinic. “She is an injured owner-surrender, we are scheduled to euthanize in 20 minutes so let us know ASAP.”

What would you do?

During the next few moments we learnt that Stella is a 1-year old cat with her whole life ahead of her.  She lived with a dog, and today that dog mauled her. She was taken to the clinic and an ultrasound revealed that her intestines are perforated.  Emergency surgery could save her.  The cost of the life-saving operation she requires however caused her owners to reach for the euthanasia form instead of their wallets..

Stella’s whole world ended on this fateful day.  Attacked in a home she thought she was safe and then left because “she’s not worth the cost.”

Stella awaiting her fate.

Stella

Her pain is controlled withmedication but she is hiding, a sign of an animal in severe distress.

How could the owners have allowed such an accident to happen? Why aren’t they doing the right thing and saving their pet’s life? We’ll never know…

Life is never easy and tough decisions await us at every turn. At any given moment we have many animals in our care, plenty of vet bills and, being true volunteers, usually very little time.

Today we took on another case. We decided to push darkness back a little further. And we ask you to join us in this attempt to gift back life.

This is a live rescue happening as we speak.

Live rescue means that we don’t know if the operation will succeed in repairing the internal damage or whether Stella will be strong enough to pull through. We cannot guarantee that we won’t make you hope today and cry tomorrow. We cannot promise you a miracle.

What we promise you is thatwe are here, we are real and we are doing everything we can to help.

Stella

UPDATE 26 June, 2015

Stella is a fighter and today she survived a four-hour surgery during which the doctors often wondered if she would make it. Her vitals were terribly unstable during the entire operation and she was barely holding on.

It turns out Stella was left to suffer for at least three days after the attack, while her owners considered options and discussed what to do. Eventually by the time they decided on euthanasia Stella’s state was critical. When the doctors opened her what they discovered shocked them. Fecal matter had flooded her abdominal cavity, having been slowly seeping and freely leaking from the many damaged sections of her small intestine, causing a massive infection.

The surgeons had to remove a large part of the small intestine due to necrosis, luckily some sections remained viable and were spared. Stella’s fight will now be for those sections to recover, resume peristaltic function and start functioning properly. This will be the make orbreak of her – if the remaining small intestine doesn’t recover her chances of survival fall drastically. Enterostomy was performed, which creates a temporary opening into the intestine through the abdominal wall and provides a way for bowel evacuation.

Stella’s doctors did all they could, now her life depends on her will to live and.. on us. She remains in ICU and is still very critical.

UPDATE JULY 2, 2015

STELLA WILL LIVE! We’ve held our breath for days waiting for signs that Stella will make it. What the doctors found when they went in for surgery was shocking. Feces covered the insides and intestines were rotting. Apparently, Stella was left like this for days before being brought to the hospital to be euthanize. It was all up to Stella to recover. At times we thought we would lose Stella, but then… the miraculously fight for life. Peristalsis functionality IS BACK and Stella’s got one paw firmly planted on the side of LIFE! Never has a POOP been so celebrated. We’ll have a full update with photos coming up, but we couldn’t wait anylonger to announce that STELLA WILL LIVE! We also have a HUGE surprise about Stella.

UPDATE JULY 12, 2015

SAY “CONGRATULATIONS” TO LEONID!

You may think that Leonid looks like STELLA, which would be very observant of you. In fact, Leonid has been Stella all along, something which was only discovered during surgery. SURPRISE! This gender mix-up is enough to make a cat laugh and, behind his stoic exterior, Leonid is very amused. The BEST NEWS of all is that our boy has recovered so well from his operation that he is ready to be fostered, or even adopted. Can you see Leonid’s luxuriant white whiskers twitching in happy anticipation of a new life in his own home?

Stella Leonid had 20 minutes to live, or die. We chose life and now he’ll have years ahead of him.

UPDATE July 16, 2015:

Just 3 weeks ago Leonid (Stella) almost left this world. His prognosis was poor and the likelihood that he would not survive was very high.

After major surgery, which lasted four hours, and many long days of not knowing whether he would live or die, he managed to pull through!

And now Leonid is ready to go to a home to continue recovery! He is healthy, soft as velvet, very gentle, and unbelievably calm despite his ordeal. But he’s also a little lonely being stuck at the hospital. We visit every day, but he longs to be next to someone all day and night. We’re looking for someone to fix that!

  3. My heart bleeds as I see her unable to go back and rip the guy’s eyes out for letting one of his pets, harm the other one to such extend. Donation on the way for this innocent face that she now hides away. If I could only go and seek that monster. Then we would have seen who does what. Hug little Stella for me plz.

  4. I hope that the people who had her get flagged or banned from being able to take in small pets since they have an out of control dog.

  5. Have made a small donation and hope that this kitty does heal sufficiently to lead a good life as the beloved kitty of some wonderful person in the future…

  6. Can we put the so called humans to sleep? what jerks.

that poor sweet baby. It’s on their karma if she dies.

  7. Poor baby! I’m so broke right now I can’t donate, but I will pray for Stella, I can’t imagine someone leaving her like that for three days – can you file criminal charges against them for negligence? We need to keep pushing for stronger laws to prevent this from happening. I would give a kidney to save my animals.

  8. I’ve just made a little donation for Stella.
Hope she gets a quick recovery!

Stella turned out to be Leonid, a one-year-old boy – something our vets found out when they operated him. He is doing great, he survived a very complicated abdominal surgery. He is currently in a foster home, waiting for his new Humans to find him. Thank you for caring!

Of course you had to try, because that is who you are. Sadly, if her persons had brought her in sooner she might not have suffered so much! They are the ones who should have shown more care to this beloved cat. Praying she makes it after all the pain she has been thru.
