Meet Orie. Only a couple of months ago he was born in a little village somewhere in Europe. Only a couple of hours ago he was abandoned by the side of a back country road.

And only seconds before we took this photo he was hit by a car.

Orie - Let's Adopt! Global

Do you know what abandoned dogs do? Those old enough to remember?

They try to get back home.

On hot summer days and freezing winter nights, without food or water, these loyal dogs walk for miles, totally devoted to the human who betrayed them. Yearning to get back to safety, to a familiar place, to their people.

It only takes one step in the wrong direction and they can lose everything in a second.

We glimpsed Orie just as he was gingerly setting off across the road. Then a passing car hit him head on and continued, the driver unperturbed. Orie was flung into the air, fell hard, lay still for a moment, and started crawling towards the hard shoulder – hind legs no longer working, front legs clawing at the pavement, laboriously dragging his broken body to safety. We were still far but could hear his panicked cries.

We pulled over and managed to get to the little pup before any of the cars flying past ran him over a second time. He was in a state of shock and lay there motionless, eyes wide open, pupils dilated, his right paw a bleeding gaping wound. We provided first aid, such as we could, and took off in search of a veterinary clinic.

The impact had fractured both his hip joints, and had torn a large piece of flesh from his front paw.

Orie being examined

Orie shouldn’t have been abandoned by the side of the road; he shouldn’t have been hit by a speeding car; and he shouldn’t have known the pain and fear of those desperate moments that followed.

Orie in our clinic

The only good thing in Orie’s life has been us, who stumbled across him by accident, and you, who can decide to help him today.

UPDATE, August 14, 2015.

Orie has been operated successfully.

The impact from the hit and run he suffered had damaged Orie’s hind legs. Our surgeons took great care aligning and fixating the knee of the one, and the hip joint of the other leg. The front paw was luckily only grazed and had surface trauma.

Orie's operation

Right now Orie is a sad, green-legged, matchstick dog with 3 out of 4 legs having undergone restoration. Lots of physiotherapy and healing is ahead of him. It won’t be easy but we promise you – Orie will soon run.

Fingers crossed for Orie!

    Hi,
I’m so happy what you have done and what you do to all the dogs and cats and the other pets. I have never in my life thought so many people will be so cruel to the dogs and cats and other pets, before I see your website. Now I see the animals in the world wide how cruel the humans are to animals. That’s HORRIBLE! If you have take care of an pet it’s your responsibility in the animals whole life to take care of it. I be in shame to be a human when I see this. Poor the dogs and cats and I hope I have could give them all stray dogs and stray cats a home, but so big home haven’t I. You in Let’s adopt are worth gold for what you do. Thank you so much and give all the dogs and cats a big hug from me.

  9. Hello,

Trying again, I am from the UK but currently visiting India, and I have been taking care of a very sick dog I found lying in the street 1 month ago.

He has a skin infection, and he was being eaten alive by thousands of maggots.

I rented a room just for him, to keep him away from more flies, and a vet has also seen him. The vet said he was about an hour away from dying.

He is slowly getting better but he will need a home. Local people say he was originally a pet, but abandoned.

I have cats in the UK and can’t adopt him. He would have to go into 6 month quarantine if he arrived in England direct from India in any case. Can you help, or do you have any animal rescue contacts in India, I can pay his air fare and sponsor him for the rest of his life if necessary.

Please don’t delete this message without contacting me!!! I am desperate.

    1. The Let's Adopt Global Team says:

Hi, we would not delete your message under any circumstances.

We have sent you an email with some questions. Let’s see if we can help.

  10. Stories like this always break my heart. I will never understand how someone could leave such a loyal and loving animal on the side of the road for dead, when their love- or lack of love – is all the know and long for. I can’t even put into words how much I appreciate what you do and it warms my heart so much knowing that you’re out there being an advocate for their safety and wellbeing.
