A PR Lesson for the Marmara Hotel
In a day marked by the tragedy of the loss of Ebru, the stray dog, one
of Istanbul’s most endearing symbols we have witnessed one of the most
blatantly misguided examples of a PR exercise.
The Marmara cared flawlessly for Ebru for over a decade. They allowed
her to stay on the premises, they feed her, water her and provided for
all veterinary treatment. The Marmara was, and still is, an example of
how a company should exercise its civic and humane duty. So… up to
here is great.
But then the unexpected happens. Ebru gets kicked like a ball by some
thug or thugs in the vicinity. The animal the hotel had protected for
so long is fatally injured and ends up dead 48 hours later.
What would have been just a sad but quiet event some years ago
inmediately found its way onto the computer screens of many thousands
of people in a manner of minutes. And this presented a PR challenge
for the Marmara hotel.
It was a matter of choice:
a) Present themselves as the concerned entity that had lost an old friend.
b) Rush to the veterinary clinic, collect the body in a hurry to avoid
further questioning and issue a statement saying the poor innocent
Ebru died of old age. In short, pretend it didn’t happen.
Conventional wisdom would have said The Marmara choose option A. It
would have been a great opportunity to show the human side of a great
company.
Instead it choose option B.
Since the Press caught on the unfortunate event the Public Relations
Team of the Hotel has been working overtime issuing press statements,
and sending emails to its Business/Gold members stating that Ebru died
of old age.
Why would they do that? They obviously cared for that animal. Why
would they go to such extend as to fake the cause of death?
The answer its simple: Its bad for business.
What would people think about the ability of the Marmara to take care
of its guests if they cannot even take care of their dog? Is the Taxim
area a safe place to stay? Is it advisable to walk around at night?
Some would even think.. ummm.. maybe people will think its not safe to
come to Istanbul.. so.. lets pretend poor old Ebru just up and died!!!
On one side you have Turkish largest animal protection network, who,
unfortunately, has to deal with similar cases on a daily basis,
presenting accompanying pictures showing Ebru just out of an operation
and showing a massive scar across her belly. That operation lasted for
hours and it wouldn’t have been perform hadn’t it been because of its
extreme urgency. Ebru presented clear signs of trauma and this had
nothing to do with old age.
On the other hand you have a nervous Public Relation executive
desperately trying to deal with a situation for which he was clearly
not prepared.
Here are the pictures and the story. Ebru is dead. Her body has been
collected by the Hotel. To this time we have no idea of what happen
with Ebru’s body.
Surely, The Marmara PR Team will come out with a good answer for that question.
Our suggestion, the Marmara should look at its PR policy and they
should try a more open, transparent and honest approach in the future.
After all the Marmara group is an institution in this country.
Lets Adopt wont engage in further discussion on this issue. Instead we
maintain our reward of USD 2000 to whomever provides vital information
which leads to the conviction of Ebru’s killers.

LAST UPDATE: Ilhan, the veterinary surgeon at Animalia has declined to
make any statements on the issue of Ebrus death.
Some of you will find this puzzling. It is not so. Ilhan is an
excellent professional and he cannot release false statements. He
would never announce Ebrus cause of death old age.
Once again, we applaud the work of the Maramara hotel for the last
12-14 years… unfortunately they decided to follow the advice of a
wrong PR adviser..
There are already calls for a Boycott to the Marmara Hotel. Lets Adopt
will NOT support any calls for Boycott to the Marmara Hotel, on the
contrary, we hope their business continues to flourish and they keep
to their pet-friendly policy, support of the Istanbul stray and
sponsor of some of the most dedicated animal protectors in this city.

Bunlar gibi insanımsıların mutlaka toplumdan tecrit edilmeleri, tedavileri mümkünse yapılması( hiç sanmıyorum ama) mümkün olmadığı anlaşıldığında, ömür boyu toplumdan tecrit edilmiş olarak , tek başlarına yaşamaları, hem insanlar hem hayvanlar için en sağlıklısıdır diye düşünüyorum.

After caring for Ebru so well for so long it is a true shame that the hotel has chosen this course of action. They will retain respect and support by reversing their decision, acknowledging the truth and helping to find the culprits. This should not be about money and the public would have far more respect for the Marmara if they behaved honestly and caringly now.

This hotel should have the clout and guts to find the thugs who murdered Ebru! She did alot for their business and it was all positive. And yet they cover up her murder by saying she died of old age! Hotel Marmara I implore you find your backbone and find these murderers.

I’m so sad about how Ebru pass away, and I really think Marmara hotel must to find who did that’s instead to act like nothing happen!

Ebru was a credit to that hotel the Marmara, it is time that the people in the hotel spoke out and help stop this brutal torture of a dog who has served them for all these years ,SPEAK OUT MARMARA for the animal that gave its all, she was your dog ,if you don,t then these brutal sadistic thugs get away with it, how many more dogs are they going to do this to ,without your voice Ebru has died in vain, the world is watching and waiting for you ,we are all behind you ,well done for looking after her all these years, now it is your turn to repay the love that dog showed to you and all your customers .
The Marmara Hotel has the moral obligation to avenge the horrendous murder of its most reknown and beloved symbols. It is unacceptable that Ebru was left alone and defenceless at the mercy of her murders and nobody moved a finger for her! I cannot believe that nobody in the Marmara Hotel saw what was happening. The poor dog should be atrociously screaming for the fear and the pain, it is impossible that something like this went unnoticed! Please, it is YOUR DUTY now to help finding the responsibles in order they are duly punished for this crime!
I met Ebru in front of the Marmara in October 2007 and thought what a wonderful example of corporate kindness. Her horrendous death shocked and saddened me yesterday. I am extremely disappointed that the hotel did not come straight out with the truth, add to the reward and lend their prestige to the hunt for Ebru’s killers.
They would have done much to help the plight of the “street” dogs, gained in respect to have gotten behind the agencies which are working for a better life for the strays and other animals in Istanbul and hopefully all of Turkey.
I feel so sad that there are such cruel yobs about that took Ebru’s life. The hotel must stand up now and get the police and anybody that saw this to come forth with her killers, she belonged to the hotel, they will not lose their business by trying to find those that harmed her so badly, in fact it would get people to show respect that the hotel people cared so much that they are willing to look for the thugs, it must not happen again to another innocent animal and that person or those people who did this must be found to save another dog suffering, we are talking about deranged/dysfunctional sub humans, not normal people.Get the killers
R.I.P. sweet little soul, at least they cared after you for a while, but why hiding the truth, it’s so silly as anybody knows the truth. People who saw this and did nothing are even worse than the staff of this hotel.
I hope someone will denounce them, but sadly I doubt they will be prosecuted.
Let’s raise our voices again, to ask for revenge and punishment.

Ebru was a decent neighbour, somebody to say hi as I passed by the Marmara Hotel and get a warm tail wag in return. Never more, as she was a serious, veteran street dog and felt herself utterly responsible from the security of her area which was the Marmara Hotel. She was highly intelligent, she would walk hundreds of miles down to get food from neighbours she somehow convinced to provide her with juicy bones and carried them to an almost inflated black stray dog to share…
I thank Marmara Hotel for the humanity and kindness they have endowed upon Ebru for years. Her death was very sad and the hotel may have given an unfortunate response but stil Ebru would not have had such a long and loving life had Marmara not adopted and cared for her…
I will miss her a lot and tell my daughter that Ebru died peacefully in her death due to old age…
I did not realise Ebru had passed away following the brutal attack on her defenceless body, until reading these messages. How shameful that an innocent street dog and one who symbolised, until the time of her tragic death, a goodness in humanity, should be struck down and killed because of mindless violence. Why was she left to suffer this beating alone, why did people stand by and ignore her cries? Obviously people celebrated and enjoyed Ebru’s company outside the hotel. It is imperative that the hotel staff and the authorities and police begin a thorough and high profile investigation into the savage murder of this poor dog. If you allow cruelty to animals within your community you will soon find you have cruelty to people. Whoever kicked Ebru to death could just as easily hurt a child. Animal cruelty leads to violence towards human beings, that’s a fact. Please do all within your power to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice and together we must all speak out against cruelty to sentient beings, if not us, then who? They cannot protect themselves. Compassion is vital in our society today.

Everyone is waiting for a response from the Hotel Marmara.. they owe Ebru this decent act .. she served them faithfully for over a decade and now they quickly forget her and deny her justice .. The Marmara needs to add a large sum to the reward and to help investigate and bring to justice Ebru’s killers!

This is the e-mail that I sent to the Marmara yesterday:
Dear Marmara Hotel Management,
I’m an American who is married to a Turk. We live in Bostanci, and frequently dine at your Taksim hotel. We especially love having coffee and listening to the band (Sevket Ugurleur). When our guests come from abroad, we have them stay at the Marmara. And as dog owners, of course we always loved seeing Ebru when we came to the front entrance.
We are very disappointed in your handling of Ebru’s attack. The Marmara has done a great job of taking care of Ebru for so many years. You are really a model for all Istanbul citizens. We take care of our apartment’s strays, too, providing neutering, vet care, food and water. We understand that you don’t want to publicize the attack, as customers may be scared to stay at your hotel.
However, if a human was murdered in front of the hotel, do you think you could so successfully say “he died of old age”? “Just forget about it, and don’t worry about catching the murderer”? In America, people who kill animals like this can go to prison for 10 years. A deadly dog beating is a very serious situation. People who murder other people usually begin by first murdering animals. If Ebru’s killer(s) can be caught and punished now, it will probably save the lives of many other animals, and even humans.
I hope that you will reconsider your position, and begin an investigation of who killed Ebru. Do you have security cameras? Can the footage of the attack be shown on television? Maybe somebody will recognize the criminals. We believe that you should be honest about the problem, and even offer a reward for solving the crime.
Finally, we hope you will adopt and continue to care for another street dog, as Ebru had a great life with you for many years.

I would say the most dangour thing that can happen is for ANYONE to kill or torture an animal and get away with it !!!!!!

My heart sunk when this news broke and those responsible need to be brought to account for this criminal act – and this hotel will not gain respect again until they seek justice for Ebru !

Marmara Oteli’nin bu güzel kıza senelerdir sevgi ve şefkatle baktığını hepimiz biliyoruz. Zaten sorun burada değil. Büyük yanlış, olanları olmamış gibi yapmaya çalışmakta, eski bir dosta ödenmesi gereken vefa borcunu görmezden gelmeyi denemekte. Marmara Oteli’nin “evet böyle bir acı durum yaşandı, biz de elimizden gelen yardımı ve desteği göstereceğiz ki yapanları yakalayıp, yeni olayların olmasını önlemek için bir adım atabilelim” demesi gerekirdi. İstanbul’da suç yok mu, Taksim’de yaşanan suç olayları olmuyor mu ki bunu saklamaya çalışasınız? Kaldı ki görseniz bir şeyler yapacak olduğunuza zaten inanıyoruz yürekten. Bunun suçlusu siz değilsiniz ki? Ama gizlemeye çalışmayın ki bu da unutulup gidilen binlerce olaydan birine dönüşmesin…
Dahil olduğumuz grubun ilettiği detaylar ve gördüğümüz fotoğrafların doğruluğunu sorgulamayacak kadar net bilgi edindik. Bu dünya güzeli kızımızın yaşlılıktan ölmediğini gördük. Durumunun ne kadar ağır olduğuna dair fotoğraflar var, bütün karnı boyunca uzanan koca bir taze ameliyat izi, onu kurtarmak için elinden geleni yapmış son derece başarılı bir veteriner var. Onu da zor durumda bırakıyor bu gereksiz örtbas girişimleri…
Bunları bırakıp yapanları bulmaya çalışmaya odaklanalım lütfen… İnanın bunu yapanları bulmaya çalışmanıza destek verecek çok müşteriniz çıkacaktır.
Eğer endişeniz müşterilerinizin bu durumdan tedirgin olarak sizi tercih etmeyeceği ise, daha önce yaşanan çok daha vahim ve acı durumları da atlatabildiğinizi hatırlatırım…
I feel the Hotel did care for her for years and i only hope other hotels follow their lead and adopt a dog, i really hope also The Marmara adopt another dog off the street, so at least it will give another dog a chance of a home with food and hopefully spaying.I do also think the Hotel should acknowledge the fact Ebru was murdered and make it a policy to try and find out who did this terrible thing. We must remember that the person or persons responsible are vivious and evil and if that sort of badness is in them it will not change, as people with that psycho personality rarely alter and go on to committ more sick things, those people must me caught and soon,as for the people around when it happened, let it be left on their conscience ofr eternity(if they have one which i doubt) but whatever what goes around comes around.

Ne anamiz kaldi, ne mezardaki babamiz kaldi, ne kocamiz kaldi, ne yatak odamiz kaldi, atilmadik yalan, iftira, edilmedik hakaret kalmadi… Can tehditleri ciddi boyutlara gelince, durumu, yasamakta oldugum Amerika`da FBI a kadar bildirmek zorunda kaldik, Turkiye ayaginda, failler yine bulunamadi.

The Marmara Otelinden yapılan açıklamada, ”Ebru” köpeğin ”yaşlılık kaynaklı solunum yetmezliğinden” öldüğünün veterineri tarafından rapor edildiği bildirildi.
The Marmara Hotels & Residences adına yapılan yazılı açıklamada, ”The Marmara İstanbul olarak henüz 1 yaşındayken ailemize katılan, 15 yıldır birlikte olduğumuz köpeğimiz Ebru’yu kaybetmiş olmanın büyük üzüntüsü içerisindeyiz” denildi.
Bugün çeşitli yayın organlarında ”Ebru Köpek Dövülerek Öldürüldü” başlığıyla yayınlanan haberlerin gerçek dışı olduğu ve bu haberlerin üzüntülerini artırdığı ifade edilen açıklamada, şu hususlara yer verildi:
”29 Mayıs Cuma akşamı nefes problemi yaşadığı gözlenen ve oldukça yaşlı olan ‘Ebru’, tarafımızca veterinere götürülmüş ve solunum yetmezliği teşhisi konmuştur. Bütün ihtiyaçları, aşıları, yemekleri, günlük bakımı, veteriner kontrolü The Marmara tarafından karşılanan ve özellikle otelin bell team’i tarafından yakından ilgilenilen Ebru’nun yaşlılık kaynaklı solunum yetmezliğinden öldüğü, veterineri tarafından rapor edilmiştir.”
Açıklamada, The Marmara’nın gerek otel yönetimleri, gerek otel personeli olarak hayvan haklarının her zaman savunucusu bir grup olduğu, tüm tesislere evcil hayvan kabul edildiği, tesislerin artan yemeklerinin hayvan barınaklarına yollandığı ve Ebru’ya da 15 yıldır The Marmara İstanbul’da sevgi ile bakıldığı kaydedildi.
Açıklamada, ”Ebru” köpeğin ölüm nedeniyle ilgili araştırma yapan İstanbul Barosu Havyan Hakları Komisyonu Yönetim Kurulu Başkanı Avukat Hülya Yalçın’ın konuya ilişkin şu açıklamaları yaptığı vurgulandı:
”Ebru köpeğin ölüm haberinden derin üzüntü duyduk. Konuyla ilgili gerekli mercilerden temin ettiğimiz raporları inceleyerek, ölümün yaşlılığa bağlı solunum yetmezliğinden kaynaklandığı bilgisini edindik. Ebru köpek, iddia edildiği gibi dövülerek değil, yaşlılık sebebiyle ölmüştür.’ (AA)

Ebru has been for nearly 12 years a symbol of this emerging City, Istanbul.
A pure Istanbul stray Ebru was “adopted” as a puppy by the Marmara Hotel in
Taxim, the square that many consider Istanbul centre. For over a decade, Ebru
has been a fixture of this emblematic location. This kind and affectionate
dog has been greeting and extending her paw to countless personalities
visiting our beloved city. Ambassadors, Heads of State, businessmen, tourists
from every corner of the world, Ebru was always there, standing or lying
right by the Hotel Concierge, a symbol of hope kindness and tollerance in a
city that in recent times seems to have forgotten the meaning of those
abstract concepts.
Ebru has been featured in some of the worlds most prestigious publications,
Time Magazine, Newsweek, Paris Match, even Wallpaper, the monthly design
publication, put this amazing animal on its cover.
Ebru’s life just took a dramatic turn on Friday night. Ebru, the wonderfully
kind old dog was brutally attacked by one or more individuals who,
presumabily trying to emulate their favourite footballers, proceeded to
merciless kick her in the stomac one, two, three, multiple times. The attack
was savage and of a brutality typical of animal abusers. Worst of all, it
happened in the centre of Istanbul busiest square, and in plain view of tens,
possibly hundreds of people who did nothing to stop the merciless thugs.
Ebru stood there, looking into the eyes of evil. They kicked her with their
full strenght time after time. She suffered as they walked again, leaving her
bloodied and paralized on the Taxim pavement. Never Ebru felt more alone that
last friday night.
A bloodied and inert Ebru was rushed to one of Istanbul best veterinary
clinic where an emergency operation had to be performed.
Multiple fractures in the toracic box, perforated lungs, a fractured
diaphragm. Ebru’s intestines were pushed up by the force of the blows and
reached the heart area. The skilled veterinary surgeon had to re-compose Ebru
internally, much like a puzzle.
The diagnosis: Critical.
The fear and confusion she must have felt will forever leave an
impression in our minds. Of all the cases we have worked on this one has
touched our souls in a profound way.
A Nation’s treatment of its Heroes is a reflection of its values. We must
therefore reflect about what the story of Ebru (and countless animals victims
of abuse) tells us about ourselves.
Let’s Adopt will track down witnesses, collect available evidence, prepare
necessary reports and prosecute the culprits but first we have to find them
and for that we need your help.
Let’s Adopt will offer a USD 2000 reward to whoemever provides information
that leads to the conviction of those who commited this despicable atrocity.

Ebru yaklaþýk 12 yýldýr bu geliþmekte olan kentin, Ýstanbul’un simgesi olmuþtur.
Safkan bir Ýstanbul sokak köpeði olan Ebru, Ýstanbul’un merkezi sayýlan Taksim’deki Marmara Oteli tarafýndan yavruyken evlat edinilmiþti. On yýldan fazla bir zamandýr Ebru bu simgesel mekanýn demirbaþlarýndandý. Bu nazik ve sevgi dolu köpek sevgili kentimizi ziyaret eden pek çok kiþiyi karþýlamýþ, onlara patisini uzatmýþtý. Büyükelçiler, Devlet Baþkanlarý, iþadamlarý, dünyanýn her tarafýndan gelen turistler… Ebru her zaman oradaydý; yakýn zamanlarda böyle soyut kavramlarý unuttuðu anlaþýlan bu kentte ümit, þefkat ye hoþgörünün sembolü olarak Otel Konsiyerjinin yaný baþýnda durur ya da yatardý.
Ebru dünyanýn önde gelen yayýnlarýndan bazýlarýnda yer aldý. Time Dergisi, Newsweek, Paris Match, hatta aylýk tasarým dergisi Wallpaper, bu inanýlmaz hayvaný kapak yaptýlar.
Ebru’nun yaþamý Cuma akþamý dramatik bir þekilde altüst oldu. Ebru, bu harika, þefkatli yaþlý köpek, herhalde en sevdikleri futbolcularý taklit etmeye çalýþan bir veya birkaç kiþi tarafýndan saldýrýya uðradý, ve defalarca karnýna tekmeler atýldý. Saldýrý çok vahþi, ve hayvanlara eziyet edenlere has bir gaddarlýkta idi. En kötüsü, bu saldýrý Ýstanbul’un en kalabalýk meydanýnýn ortasýnda, ve bu acýmasýz canavarlarý durdurmak için parmaðýný bile kýpýrdatmayan onlarca, hatta yüzlerce insanýn gözü önünde gerçekleþti.
Ebru orada, kötülüðün gözünün içine bakakaldý. Onu defalarca, olanca güçleriyle tekmelediler. Onu Taksim kaldýrýmlarýnda kanlar içinde ve felç olmuþ durumda býrakýp yürüyüp gittiklerinde ýzdýrap çekiyordu. Ebru hiç geçen Cuma akþamý olduðu kadar yalnýz hissetmemiþti kendini.
Kanlar içinde ve hareketsiz Ebru derhal Ýstanbul’un en iyi veteriner kliniklerinden birine götürüldü, ve acil ameliyata alýndý.
Göðüs kafesinde çoklu kýrýklar, delinmiþ ciðerler, yýrtýlmýþ bir diyafram. Tekmelerin þiddetinden Ebru’nun barsaklarý yukarýya itilmiþ, kalp bölgesine gelmiþti. Becerikli veteriner operatör Ebru’nun iç organlarýný bulmaca çözer gibi yeniden yerleþtirdi.
