Simba, Hayatımı Değiştiren Terrier…

Bugünün yazısı, Simba’ya, ondan her bahsedişimde gözlerimin dolu dolu olması ve boğazımın düğümlenmesine dair olacak.

Sanıyorum ki çoğunuz Sahip Çıkalım’ın çıkış öyküsünü, bu işe nasıl başladığımızı bilmiyorsunuz…

6 Ocak 2008, yaşlı Terrier’im Simba, ameliyat masasında hayatını kaybetti. Memelerindeki tümörler sebebi ile tedavi görüyordu. Tümörler yayıldı. Sahibi, onu kısırlaştırmadığı için hastalığa yakalanmıştı. Bunun yerine onu çiftleştirmişti. Simba, o kör haliyle başının çaresine baksın diye sokaklara atıldığında 14 yaşındaydı.

Bu fotoğraf, onu SHKD’de ilk gördüğüm anda çekilmişti. Barınakta çalışanlar ciddi davranış bozukluğu olan kör bir köpeğin varlığından bahsetmişlerdi. Kimseyi yanına yaklaştırmıyordu, cesur ve haşindi… Ona ait ilk anım, bir tomar gri tüyün aniden üstüme saldırarak beni öldürmeye çalışmasıydı. Sonra, aniden hırlamayı kesip elimi yalamaya başmıştı.

İlk görüşte aşktı bizimki. O gün barınaktan, herkesin korktuğu ve kimsenin istemediği o kör köpekle beraber ayrıldım. Bu yaşlı köpek hayatımı sonsuza dek değiştirecekti.

Neredeyse üç sene boyunca Simba ve ben hep beraberdik. Bana çok düşkündü ve benden başka kimseye güvenmediğini söylersem abartmış sayılmam. Başlarda diğer iki köpeğimle beraber evde kalırken, zaman içinde benimle beraber toplantılara bile gelmeye başlamıştı. Simba, daha önce hiç bir köpeğin bulunmadığı yerlere gidiyordu.
Simba kördü. Tedavisi yapılmamış hipermatüre kataraktı vardı… Durum karmaşıktı ve çok acı çekiyordu. Simba’yı iki kere ameliyat ettirdim.

Sadece çok az bir süre görebildi ve yeniden kör oldu. Sonra kanseri ilerledi.

Tüm bu yıllar boyunca inanılmaz yoğunlukta deneyimler yaşadık birlikte, buna ailemin dağılması da dahil. Tamamen dürüst olmam gerekirse, itiraf etmeliyim ki, vazgeçtiğim anlarda bana hep Simba engel oldu.

Simba, Ali’nin ameliyat masasında hayata gözlerini yumdu. Tarih 6 Ocak 2008′di ve ben orada, onun yanında değildim.

Simba benim için müthiş bir öğretmendi. Bana şefkatin gerçek anlamını, hayatta hep dik durmayı, sebat etmeyi ve yenildiğim anlarda bile asla vazgeçmeyip, ayakta kalmayı öğretti. O bana, sonsuz güvenin gerçek anlamını öğretti.

Bugün, hepimiz, burada bu yazıyı Simba’nın sayesinde okuyoruz. Bugün, ağımız sayesinde arkadaşlıklar kuran hepiniz, kurtardığımız köpekler ve hayatlarına mutluluk kattığımız tüm aileler, hepimiz, bunu Cesur Yürek Simba’ya borçluyuz.

Simba, the terrier that changed my life.

Today’s post is likely to be brief mainly due to the fact that whenever I try to write or speak about her I get all teary eyed and I get a fist stuck in my throat.

I realize that many of you don’t know the history of Let’s Adopt!, how we began…

6 of January 2008, my old rescued blind terrier Simba passed away on the operation table. She was being operated of mammary tumors. It had spread. She developed the disease because her previous “owner” did not neutered her. Instead they bred her. When Simba was 14 years old she was thrown to the streets, blind, to fend for herself.
This picture was taken the moment I saw her for the first time at SHKD. The workers had told me that there was a blind dog with serious behavior issues. She wouldn’t let anyone get anywhere near her, she was fearless, and fierce… My first memory of her is of a grey ball of hair lunging at me wanting to kill me. She then suddenly stopped growling, and started licking my hand.

It was love at first sight. I left the shelter with the old blind dog that everyone feared and nobody wanted. That old dog would change my life forever.

For nearly three years Simba and I spent all our time together. She was very attached to me and I would go as far as saying that she
trusted no one but me. At first she would stay at home with our other two dogs but in time she would end up coming with me to my meetings.

Simba went to places where no dog had been before.

Simba was blind, a hypermature cataract that went untreated… The condition complicated and she was in a lot of pain. I had her operated twice, and she recovered sight slightly only to loose it again. Then, cancer developed…

During her years with me we went through incredibly powerful experiences, including the break-up of our family pack. I am being
truly honest when I tell you that she kept me going at times when I considered giving up.

Simba passed away at Ali’s operation table on the 6th of January 2008. I was not there to hold her.
Simba was a great teacher for me. She taught me the real meaning of compassion, she taught me to be tough, to persevere, to never give up and always stand tall, even at times of defeat.

Today, you are all here, right now, reading this post, because of her. Today all of you who have formed friendships through our network, the dogs that we have saved, the families that they have brought joy to, we are all indebted to Simba, the Braveheart.

Sevgili Üyelerimiz,

Gruplarımızın (1,2, 3,…) büyümesiyle yardıma muhtaç hayvanları sahiplendirme gücümüz ve  imkanlarımız da gelişiyor. Ne yazık ki sorunlarımız da büyüyor. Grubumuzun nasıl işlediğini anlamayan üyelerimiz, yardımımızı İSTEYİP, hayvanları bizlere bırakıyorlar.

Bu tür durumların tekrarlanmaması adına işte sizlere grubumuzun idari kurallari , bu grubu diğerlerinden ayıran prosedürler ve bizi ”benzersiz” yapan özellikler:

a)Viktor Larkhill’ in portfolyosundaki köpekler nereden bulunuyor?

Köpekler Türkiye’nin her yerinden ve çeşitli kaynaklardan geliyor. Hayvanları kurtaran ve onlara sahip arayanlar, sahiplerinin ”terkettiği” hayvanlara bakan veterinerler, satamadıkları için hayvanları öldürmek yerine vermek isteyen pet shoplar,orman ve oto yolda başıboş dolaşan hayvanlar, köpek alıp bir hafta sonra ondan kurtulmak isteyen insanlar…

Sahip Çıkalım burada hayvanseverlere yardımcı oluyor. (ve eğitiyor).

Zaman zaman şiddete maruz kalmış hayvanları ki çoğu vakada bunlar “hayvan severlerin” elinden oluyor, kurtarmak için bizler devreye giriyoruz.

Kesinlikle kabul edemeyeceğimiz iki durum var:

-birinin köpek yavrusu almaya karar verip, şimdi onunla ne yapacağını bilememesi.
-birinin bir hayvana ev/sahip bulunabilmesi için bizlerden yardım isteyip, bizim kararımıza güvensizlik duyup hayvanın nereye gideceğinde son söz hakkını kendinde görmesi

Diğer tüm şartlarda her zaman yardım ediyoruz.

b) Bir Hayvan bulduğunuzda yapmanız gerekenler:

Kurtarma prosedurumuz :

- ASLA hayvani barınağa götürmeyin. ASLA. BUNU YAPMAYIN!!
Barınağın anlamı koruma, bakım ve güvenliktir. Türkiye’ de barınaklar (bir ya da ikisi haricinde) köpekleri sadece bayat ekmek ve çöp olan menü ile besleyen tembel ,hiç motivasyonu olmayan, duyarsız çalışanlara asistanlik eden, hayvan istifçileri tarafindan yönetiliyor. Eğer bana bağlı olsa Türkiye’deki tüm barınakları kapatır,buradaki çogu müdürü uyguladıkları hayvan zulmünden dava ederdim.

Bu barınakların büyük çoğunluğunun neler yaptiğı sözle anlatılamaz.

-yaralı hayvan: onu veterinere götürün ve yaralarını tedavi ettirin. Eğer  köpek sokakta yaşayabilecek durumdaysa, onu bulduğunuz yere götürün. Eger açıkça terk edilmiş ise ya da o şekilde yaşayamayacak ve yeterince çekmiş olduğunu düşünürseniz, bizler ona yeni ev bulacağız.

- Sahip Çıkalım tarafından yeni evlere yerleştirilen köpekler: öncelikle onu kurtaran olarak sizler ,biz bir ev bulana kadar hayvanın guvenliği icin tüm sorumluluğu üstlenirsiniz. Eviniz ya da pansiyonda bakabilirsiniz. Eğer varsa bizler geçici yuva bulmaya çalışırız.(Bu yüzden geçici yuvalar çok önemli).

Köpeğin yeni evine yerleşmesi için elimizden geleni yapıyor olsak da, bu her zaman bize bağlı olmayabiliyor.

Bize hayvanın en az 10 adet fotoğrafını göndermeniz gerekiyor. Fotoğraf kalitesi iyi olmali. Fotoğraflar ne kadar iyi olursa hayvan için ev bulma şansımız o kadar yükseliyor. Fotoğraflarınızın yeterince iyi olmadığını düşünürsek size fotoğrafçı göndermeye calışacağız. Ancak bu her zaman mümkün olmuyor ve süreci uzatıyor.

Tüm harcama,tıbbi tedavi masrafı,kısırlaştırma operasyonu,pansiyon gideri,en son yerleşeceği eve ulaşım gideri kurtarıcıya aittir. Sahip Çıkalım bir elin parmakları kadar sayıdaki gönüllüsünün çabalarıyla sürüyor. Bu yüzden  kurtacıların getirdikleri hayvanların masraflarını ödemeyi kabul edemiyoruz.

Bir köpeği ‘’kurtarmak’’;  onun hayati tüm sorumluluğunu almak, uygun bir ev bulunana dek tüm ihtiyaçlarını sağlamayı üstlenmek demektir. Çok az insan bunu anlıyor ve anlamadıklarında geride maddi yükünü bizler çekmek zorunda kalıyoruz.

Sahip Çıkalım, bu kuralda hiç bir istisna yapmayacaktır.

Sahip Çıkalım’ ın Simba adında kurduğu bir fonu var. Amacı kurtarıcısı olmayan hayvanların , hayatta kalmalarını sağlayan cerrahi prosedürlerine finansal destek vermek… Diğer tüm durumlarda giderler kurtarıcıya aittir.

- Ev bulma,başvuranları inceleyip en önemlisi hayvanın kim tarafından sahipleneceği konusunda son kararı verme sorumluluğu Sahip Çıkalım’ a aittir. Kararlarımızdaki tüm sorumluluğu üstleniyoruz. Bizlerin tek önceliği ve isteği hayvanlara yardım etmektir, kararlarımızı kafamızda bu hedef varken veririz.

Let’s Adopt, rules of the Game

Dear members,

As the groups grow so do our reach and our ability to find homes for animals in need. Unfortunately our problems grow as well, group members who don’t really understand the way the group works, DEMAND our help and animals end up dumping on us.

In order to avoid the repeat of this situations here you have the Rules of this Group, our code of conduct, the procedures that make the difference between this group and all others, the stuff that makes us “unique”.

a) Where do we get the dogs in Viktor Larkhill’s portfolio?

The dogs come from all over Turkey and from a variety of sources.. Animal rescuers who have saved an animal and are now looking for a home, veterinarians who have an animal whose owner has “disappeared”, petshops who have failed to sell an animal and want to give it away instead of killing him, animals that have been found wandering in the forest, or the highways, people who were given a dog and after a week want to get rid of it.

Let’s Adopt is here to assist (and educate) animal lovers.

We also do our own rescues. Periodically we have to intervene in cases of animal abuse, in most cases at the hands of “animal lovers”.

There are only two cases we refuse:

- someone decides to have puppies and now doesn’t know what to do with them.

- someone wants us to help find a family for an animal but doesn’t trust our judgement and wants to have the final word on where the animal goes.

Every other case we will always help with.

b) What to do if you find an animal.

Here are our rescue procedures:

- NEVER take an animal to a shelter. NEVER. DONT DO IT!!

The word “shelter” stands for protection, care, safety. In Turkey shelters are (with one or two exceptions) abject places run by animal hoarders assisted by insensitive, lazy and unmotivated municipal employees where dogs are fed a menu consisting of stale bread and garbage. If this depended on me all shelters in Turkey would be closed, and a large number of its managers would be charged with animal cruelty.

What those places do is, in the vast majority of cases, unspeakable.

- Injured animal: take him to a vet and treat him from his injuries. If the dog can survive on the streets, return him where you found him. If the dog has clearly been abandoned or you consider that he cannot survive out there and that he has already suffered enough then we’ll rehome him.

- Dogs to be rehomed by Let’s Adopt: First of all you, as the rescuer will assume full responsibility for the safety of the animal until we find him a family. You could keep him a home, or put him on a pension or, if available, we will try to find a foster home (this is why foster homes are so important).

We do all we can so that the dog is rehomed as quickly as possible but this doesn’t always depend on us.

You need to send us at least 10 pictures of the animal. The pictures have to be of good quality. The better the pictures are the bigger the chances of finding a home for the animal. If we think the pictures are not good enough we will try to send a photographer to you but that is not always possible and it will delay things.

Every cost, medical treatment, neutering operation, pension costs, transportation costs to the animal final home are to be covered by the rescuer. Let’s Adopt is run with the money of a handful of volunteers, therefore we cannot accept to cover the expenses of animals brought in by private rescuers.

“To rescue” a dog means to assume full responsibility for that animals life and provide for his every need until a suitable family is found. Very few people understand this and more often than not we are the ones left with the financial burden.

Let’s Adopt won’t make exceptions to this rule.

Let’s Adopt has set up a Fund, Simba’s Fund, whose goal is to finance life saving surgical procedures on animals who have no “rescuer”. In all other cases the cost will have to be covered by the rescuer.

- The responsibility for finding a home, screen the applicants and, very important, the final decision of who gets to adopt the animal lies on the management of  Let’s Adopt. We assume full responsibility for our decisions. Our only priority and interest is to help the animals, our decisions are taken with only that goal in mind.

Zeytin and Campare are two of the pups whose operations were financed by the Simba Fund. After their operations Let’s Adopt has taken full responsibility for the two pups and we have placed them on one of our İstanbul foster homes where they will remain until we find them a suitable home.

Here you can see some pictures of their new life away from the forest and the streets of İstanbul, enjoying their new life as members of a human family.

Campare’s personality shines in the pictures taken by our photographer, Edibe Ozler.

Campare quickly forgot about the ordeal that she went through. After her operation she has quickly adapted to her new life and is learning little by little that not all people are bad and that life with three legs is not that terrible when surrounded by kind people.

Campare is on a special diet of Raw Meaty Bones and organs. She is growing strong and healthy.

Campare loves to sit on the leopard printed couch. From that position of privilege she controls whatever happens in the house.

Zeytin was found with horrible injuries. Her leg had been brutally torn apart by a hunters trap. We suspect she was a hunters dog and was left behind when she was injured.

She absolutely loves to be touched and pampered.
