This post is going to force to reconsider each and every pre-conceived idea about a number of Animal Rights  Organizations, PETA in particular.  If you are happy with things as they are then I suggest you to stop reading NOW.

——-

On March 10, 2010 Nathan Winograd, the leader of the No-Kill movement and Founder of the No-Kill Advocacy Center reminded us all of the following statistics..

In 2006, an official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) shows that they took in 3,043 animals, of which 1,960 were cats, 1,030 were dogs, 52 were other companion animals, and one was a chicken. Of these, they killed the chicken, killed 1,942 cats, 988 dogs, and 50 classified as “other companion animals.” They found homes for only 2 cats, 8 dogs and 2 of the other companion animals.

By the numbers:

  • PETA killed 1,942 of the 1,960 cats, finding homes for only 2.
  • PETA killed 988 of the 1,030 dogs finding homes for only 8.
  • PETA killed 50 of the 52 other companion animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.), finding homes for only 2.
  • PETA killed the chicken they took in.

That’s a 97% kill rate. (This was based on PETA’s own reporting to the Commonwealth of Virginia, which only requires “recordkeeping and reporting of only those animals taken into custody… for purposes of adoption.”) Despite $30 million in revenues, they found homes for only 12 animals. An additional 21 cats and 25 dogs were transferred to another agency (likely a kill shelter since PETA has a “policy against No Kill shelters.”) The rest were put to death. Why?

I had known for a long time that PETA was an advocate of the “final solution” for abandoned animals in the US, condoning and justifying the killing of millions of dogs and cats every year, but what I had no idea about was that an organization known for their exposes about animal cruelty in circuses and animal farms would bring herself to kill 2.300 dogs, most of them perfectly healthy animals.

It couldn’t be… it really couldn’t be…

But then it turned out that it was… the more research I did in the subject, the more people I spoke to, the closer I looked at the actual figures, the more terrifying and sinister things became.

I will continue quoting Winograd:

” In the last ten years, they have killed 21,537 animals: that’s roughly 2,000 animals a year every year for the last decade; or over five animals killed by PETA every single day. PETA has argued that all of the animals it kills are “unadoptable.” In fact, PETA’s attorney stated that in his letter threatening a defamation lawsuit if I did not back down. But this claim is a lie. It is a lie because the numbers historically come from the State of Virginia’s reporting form which only asks for data for animals taken into custody “for the purpose of adoption.” It is a lie because PETA refuses to provide its criteria for making that determination. It is a lie because rescue groups and individuals have come forward stating that the animals they gave PETA were healthy and adoptable. It is a lie because testimony under oath in court from a veterinarian showed that PETA was given healthy and adoptable animals who were later found dead by PETA’s hands, their bodies unceremoniously thrown away in a supermarket dumpster. And it is a lie because Newkirk herself admitted as much.”

And then It dawned on me. The very same reason why PETA’s involvement in Turkish animal welfare has been mainly limited to a few publicity stunts, and a couple of posters using footballers and singers is that, in essence, PETA’s solution to the stray dog issue in Turkey would be to round up all animals and kill them. And of course, they know this will never happen in Turkey not only The Animal Wellfare Law 5199 clearly established Neuter and Return as the only legal method to control stray dog population, the entire Turkish animal lover community is completely against euthanasia.

Ask others to stop killing whilst they themselves condone and participate in the largest massacre of companion animals in the history of makind?

Isn’t this a supreme act of hypocrisy?

We needed to speak to PETA and we were finally given the chance last week in Istanbul when we had a chat with Dave Mathews, PETA’s Vice-President.

Mathews, tall and slender cuts a dashing figure in the middle of Istiklak street in August. He arrived out of nowhere, jumped off the touristic tramway, literally grabbed the poster off the hands of one of the Turkish activists and offered his best smile for the camera.

Unfortunately for Matthews, the smile vanished the moment he realized that he was surrounded by members of Let’s Adopt!, and that, to his surprise the entire animal welfare community is united in its condemnation of euthanasia as a method of dealing with the stray dog problem.

Mathews justifications for mass killing range from the ludicrous to the tragic. He went as far as saying that “in poorer countries people dont take their dogs to veterinarians!”. Well, the USA is not precisely considered a “poor country”, so I guess that should solve the matter. No. When we proposed that Adoptions and the No-Kill Equation as the way forward Mathews completely rejected the idea as naive.

Where did it all go wrong with these people? If this what is left of PETA? Has the once mighty A dog killer in designer clothes…

Let’s Adopt!, is committed to the end of the yearly killing of millions of domestic animals, and if this commitment means to expose PETA for what they are, then so be it.

The Right to Life is the most basic and fundamental of all rights. An animal rights organization can never ignore that very basic right. By engaging in Killing activities and endorsing the execution of millions of animals a year PETA has effectively distroyed any credibility it may have as an Animal Rights organization.

A dead dog, a dead cat, has no rights any longer. He is dead! And from death, my friends, there is no way back.

Viktor Larkhill

P.S. Don’t miss this great post by Brett Sundermeyer… obviously the world has finally realised this nonsense.

  1. I am really shocked. I had read and heard little snippets of information regarding PETA, but out of the mouth of babes!!!! THE TRUTH!!!! Shame PETA, you are so very wrong. If an animal is suffering intolerable pain and there is absolutely nothing to do to save them, YES, put them out of their suffering!!! BUT, if there is any flicker of life in any animal, it is our GOD-given duty on earth to care for and nurture these animals!!! YOU DON’T KILL THEM!! You try and help them, SAVE THEM!!! We are, all the animal activists, and animal lovers, fighting for SAVING the animals!! SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR ANIMALS, SAVE A LIFE!!!!! ADOPT DON’T SHOP!!! You are so very wrong PETA, and you should change your beliefs about animals rights you should no longer exist!!!! WE NEED A NATIONAL SPAY AND NEUTER LAW, CLOSE PUPPY MILLS,, ADOPT DON’T SHOP!!! This is why we are fighting so hard for, so PETA, save lives, spend a few bucks to try and save a stray, or an abused animal!!! YES IS AGREE PETA YOU ARE SO VERY WRONG, AND I AM GLAD YOU ARE TOTALLY EXPOSED!!!

  2. what hypocrisy!! I had no idea. thanks Viktor.
I always thought PETA was over the top.

  3. Janette Hamilton says:

As I have said numerous times in these threads, PETA is not in the business of animal advocacy, but rather they are in the business of making themselves famous off the backs of dead animals. If we want to see the hypocrisy in this organization we do not have to look far. They condemn the wearing of fur because it senselessly kills animals for no good reason, then they turn around and euthanize supposedly unadoptable animals who are completely healthy FOR NO GOOD REASON! Worst part of this is they think they are justified! Show me an animal rescue advocate who is not willing to work with an animal to make it adoptable, and I will show you a PETA supporter. I can say this with some measure of authority since I have been rehabilitating rescued dogs for just over twenty years. I will also say this, there is no such thing as an unadoptable dog! There are only dogs who need rehabilitation, and love. PETA the time has come for you to make an accounting for your actions, the world now knows what is truly going on!

  4. In the past couple years when I began reading more online regarding comments about PETA, I’d read a comment that said PETA doesn’t believe anyone should own an animal if it was left up to them. I can’t comprehend why PETA can do good with their investigations (which they do), etc. but they’re at the opposite end of the spectrum with the euthenizations. As of this date, are those statistics still high like before? I’ve not read anything anywhere that talks about how it is now, 2009 and 2010, though I figure about the same.
I’ve been getting the impression that PETA is only about their business of investigations, etc. and using all the money for those aspects of their business. All in all, PETA is just a business and not at all into adoption. Maybe that would take too much money and time that they don’t want to spend nor deal with.

  5. maura wiull says:

well said! I knew some of this about PETA, now I know more and will continue to donate to true no kill shelters and now to you…NO PETA!

  6. I truly was shocked when I learned the truth about PETA in February and I started right away to spread the news! It’s unbelievable but true and we all should be careful about this kind of Animal welfare organisations!
The key is: Spay! Neuter! Adopt!
And the most important: LOVE your pet like it is loving you: unconditional and til final day is comming – not killing!
PETA is a mass murderer – that’s the ugly truth!
    Thank’s for spreading the words!

  7. Jean Hehn-Bradley says:

Why is PETA in Turkey in the first place? were they invited by the Municipalities?
Why not just ask PETA to leave Turkey or who is it that can ask them to leave.

  8. Aida Marina says:

PETA has been murdering healthy dogs, cats and other animals because it finds it easy to do so! They advertise heavily that they protect animals but, once they receive money, they do the exact opposite.

Just look at the dead little animals – they were young, healthy and did not deserve to be murdered just because PETA’s President found it easier and more “cost effective” to KILL than trying to find homes for them.

I have never contributed to PETA and never will until the current Monsters running it are removed and replaced.

  9. Alicia Oxenorn says:

IDid Nate tell you about the HSUS another very well funded organization that has done some very questionable actions here in Philadelphia and in the states. It is truly unreal that these corporations (and they are major corporations not shelters) are the ones some people still see as the face of animals because of their star power and unlimited funding for self promotion while not housing animals and testifying in favor of BSL and in favor of killing abused pit bulls with funding from the unknowing public who think they are helping. It should be illegal. Please know where your money goes.

I am happy to see Nathan and Lets Adopt have found each other. Maybe we have hope, more and more people without an agenda other than saving life can create change and take down major corporations when they fail to do their job and mislead the public.
    Be well
    Lish

  10. While you are looking out for PETA, keep your eye on the agenda of the world Humane Society, which is overseen by the HSUS. Beware!

  11. Leigh Burdett says:

Where do you all think the millions of homeless strays each year in the US, and multi million globally go if there are all no kill shelters? To the farm in the country?
Get educated on the topics before you form judgement. Judge PETA for it’s accomplishments, and if you don’t know what they are call and ask, or go to their website. They are vast and beyond what any other animal rights group has done for pets/animals issues around the world.
I guess PETA hasn’t done a good enough job communicating the need to get people like who claim to love pets, up to an understanding of the global animal abuse, and what it takes to manage it.\
Either that, or you’re all from KFC, or one of the major companies that PETA has stood up against for animal abuse, while you would prefer to make money and abuse.
SPAY and NEUTER has always been PETA’s charge, as well as the United States Humane Society, ASPCA and every local animal advocate group. We all know that is the only answer to no more homeless pets, and to stop the killing of adoptable pets. Let me know when you’re headed to the “farm” where all the millions of homeless pets live, as commendable as no kill shelters are, they don’t stop the animal overpopulation alone.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Leigh… PETA should have done a better job learning themselves that death is hardly ever a solution.
For more information get in touch with Nathan Winograd, he’ll tell you all about the way forward and the No – Kill Equation:

      http://www.nokilladvocacycenter.org/nokillequation.html

Glad to have you amongst our readers.. stay long enough and you’ll see what can be done with just a tiny little bit of vision.

  12. I love the no-kill philosophy and I volunteer at a no-kill shelter, but I have to say that if there are truly no other options, it’s more humane to euthanize an animal than to let it suffer under deplorable circumstances.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Sally, there are ALWAYS other options…

      xx

    2. Viktor Larkhill says:

      There are always options..

  13. Georgia Kotidis says:

OMG this is so disturbing to me ..When will this stop when ? It just shows that you better do your research before you support any organization because you may be supporting killing of animals ..I had no idea ..thanks for the information Viktor ..Im so glad you guys do what you do and find the truth ..expose these murderers for what they really are ..Sadly its always about the monentary gain not about really helping animals ..ugh what a sad case of events ..

  14. Jack Carone says:

Equally disturbing is the number of supposed “animal advocates” who excuse PETA’s killing because “they do other good things”. As if a billboard or PR stunt makes up for this betrayal of companion animals. It is a testament to PETA’s branding that they can get “animal lovers” to defend this demented policy coming from a mentally disturbed leader who considers herself an angel of death. And they are not an animal rights group. The most basic right is that of life itself, and Nathan Winograd has a scan of a postcard on his site from Newkirk, stating that right to life of an animal is not espoused by PETA. This group should be shunned until there is healthy new leadership with the pro-companion animal outlook that most supporters mistakenly presume PETA possesses.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Absolutely… their position is totally inmoral and absurd.

    2. Viktor Larkhill says:

Wonderful Jack.. I couldn’t have put it better..

  15. Denis Hennelly says:

PETA has saved more animals through its vegan outreach, lab investigations, and publicity stunts than anyone commenting here. The exploiters love it when we argue amongst ourselves… that’s why they created the petakillsanimals.com website referenced above, which is owned and operated by the Center for Consumer Freedom, an industry lobbying group. When we’ve succeeded in stopping animal exploitation for money, then there will be time to criticize PETA’s choices.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Denis.. the statistics and facts are true…
I don’t care who the whistleblower is.. this is a reality that every PETA supporter should know, and I bet they don’t.

  16. Well…I am completely stunned! I have me 2 persons from PETA during a protest against A ustralia in Chicago regarding the wool industry and mutilations of lamb and ships…and also for a Chinese embassy protest against dogs/cats fur. I will email them this article and demand a response. Thank you, information is power.

  17. We had trouble believing this when we first heard about this but Peta went on Twitter using a picture of a clearly unwell cat to justify advocating euthanasia for all feral cats..monstrous.
    – so scary and wrong but READ NATHAN WINOGRAD..PETA have to be STOPPED…we’re with you on this.

  18. OMG, I am truly shocked. Saving animals is a daily battle and knowing is half of it. Thank you, Viktor.
