What do we want from our animals?

Today the popular newspaper Haberturk, in its İstanbul edition published an article with the following headline:

“They are vaccinated but they attack”

To illustrate that insidious statement they choose to published picture taken from a few hundred meters away of a group of stray dogs happily wagging their tails whilst following a lady and her daughter in the hope of a piece of bread, perhaps.

This doesn’t come as a surprise as the newspaper Istanbul edition has been covering the stray animal issue in a negative light since its beginning. What is surprising is that the Editor in Chief of this newspaper, Fatih Altaylı is known for his love for animals and so do most of the writers in this newspaper. We, in fact have quite a few members in our group who work for HaberTurk.

There are hundred quotes out there that deal with the necessity of integrity in journalism. The Press, as much as it is needed to keep democracy in check can become a very destructive force when those in charge of keeping its editorial integrity fail to do what is right.

The article of today is one of such examples.

At a time when Turkish animal welfare seems to be finding the correct path, at a time when the country’s progressive Animal Welfare Law is being modified and strengthened, at a time of expanding awareness and reflection about our shortcomings, of unprecedented grassroots and education efforts addressed to the youth in order to shape the nation there comes a so-called-journalist, publishing an misleading article in a paper read the masses who are daily trying to decide what is right and what is wrong.

There are many great journalists in this country known by their balanced, fair and principle stance on the issues that matter. They write for some of the leading newspapers in Turkey and they face a daily struggle trying to lead this nation through a narrow path of integrity.

And then there are the others…

We would like to say this to Mr Fatih Altaylı: As much as we would love it to be vaccination is not a remedy for hunger and thirst. Neither is it for people’s ignorance and bigotry

Gazetenizi çıktığı günden beri izlemekte olan, ve piyasadaki örneklerinden çok daha ilerici ve öncü niteliklerinden ötürü takdir eden bir okurunuz olarak size, özgür düşünceye ve güçsüz ve ünsüz de olsa haklıyı savunmaya yönelik tavrınızdan ötürü teşekkür ederim.

HaberTürk, Türkiye’de gazeteciliğin uzun süredir arayışında olduğu taze bir nefes olmuştur. Eminim pek çok okur benimle aynı düşünceyi paylaşacaktır.

Ancak, gazetenizin ilk günlerinden itibaren İstanbul ekinde ulusal bölümlerin tam tersine bir “sokak hayvanları politikası” izlendiği görülmektedir.

Ulusal gazete ne kadar insancıl, ne kadar doğrudan ve iyiden yanaysa İstanbul o kadar “sokak hayvanları korkutuyor” “başıboş hayvanlar saldırıyor” “korkudan dışarı çıkamıyoruz” türünden kışkırtıcı ve hayvanları heddef gösteren nitelikte haberler geçmektedir.

Bunun en son örneği ise bugün gazetenizde yayınlanan “Aşılılar ama saldırıyorlar” başlıklı, bir anne kızı bir lokma yemek için takip eden aç ve susuz bir kopek grubunu gösteren haberdir.

Sevgili Altaylı, uygar bir ülke özlemimiz içinde herbirimizin üzerine düşen görevi yapmak zorunda olduğu bir dönemdeyiz. Gazeteniz de bu uğurda savaş vermekte ve beğeniyle kabul görmektedir. Sizden, ülkemizin aklıbaşında hayvanseverleri olarak dileğimiz, lütfen editoryal masanızda (İstanbul eki) bu konuda daha dikkatli ve duyarlı davranılması ve bu çaresiz ve suçsuz hayvanların hedef haline getirilmemesidir.

Sizin de bir hayvansever ve savunmasızı nasıl her pahasına savunmaya hazır olduğunuzu çok iyi bildiğim için bu mektubun yerine ulaştığına eminim.
