DUMPSTER KITTEN TWO
We rescued the Dumpster Bunch recently from an alley dumpster where someone had found it acceptable to dispose of three kittens in a neatly tied plastic bag. We took the little cats in, placed them in a foster home and embarked on finding them homes. All was well for a while.
Gradually, however, it started to appear that something was not quite right with Dumpster Kitten Two.
Within a short period of time together with the good stuff that was going on — like us discovering his real name was Chicco, bad stuff started to occur. On multiple occasions Chicco had to be rushed to the vet clinic with unusual symptoms such as a seriously raised pulse, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Chicco was hospitalized for days at a time so series of careful examinations, tests and observation could be performed. Then a totally unexpected diagnosis was uncovered.
DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA
A diaphragmatic hernia is the rupture of the diaphragm, with all abdominal organs such as liver, stomach and intestines entering the chest cavity and beginning to apply significant pressure upon the lungs and heart, resulting in a life-threatening situation. Diaphragmatic hernias require urgent medical attention as entrapped bowels can become strangulated and a necrotic process may commence. The condition also puts a great strain on the heart and the patient may deteriorate sharply and critically.
The vet team is considering the possibility that Chicco’s hernia may be congenital as examinations prove it is not newly acquired — but in this particular case we are of a different opinion.
We find it not unlikely, in fact we find it quite believable, that the creature who thought it was OK to throw four lives away like so much rubbish, could have spent some time kicking them about somewhat beforehand. Chicco’s body had miraculously managed to adapt to the condition, displaying no symptoms and managing to lead an almost normal life — for a while. Inevitably a condition like this would start manifesting, and it did.
THE VERDICT
Dumpster Kitten Two, with his newly discovered sweet name Chicco, is currently in our clinic expecting his verdict. In order to live he needs surgery and to get the surgery he needs your help. The vet team has informed us that he must be stabilized first so we have a few days to ensure funds for the operation.
