When you first see Emily nothing will prepare you for what you will see next.
A beautiful and gentle neighborhood cat, Emily lived on the streets. Some people fed her, others shushed her away, and she survived from day to day on the kindness of strangers.
Animals suffer silently, and Emily did too. Nobody knew or even suspected about the monster hiding under her belly.
It took months before anybody noticed the bulge.
It then took an hour to learn the terrifying truth in a veterinary clinic.

The terrifying wound on Emily’s belly is caused by inflammation of the mammary glands, which, unnoticed and untreated, grew and filled with pus. The swollen wound would have rubbed at the ground every time Emily tried to eat, becoming further infected until it eventually burst and started to rot. Emily is severely underweight, and a cataract has dimmed her left eye, rendering it useless.
The vet team also suspect endometritis, an inflammatory condition of the the lining of the uterus, usually caused by infection, which could lead to pyometra.
Emily’s blood test results report very low RBC counts, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and thrombocytes. Emily is receiving intensive care, and has been placed on antibiotics while the vets are determining next steps in stabilizing her. She is too weak for any kind of surgery at this point, so the wound is being kept open and is cleaned and flushed daily. A blood transfusion is being considered as well.
It is the end of the week, you’ve been waiting to have a break from it all.
But before you go, please look beyond the ugly wound into Emily’s beautiful eyes, and give her another thought.
