When we first saw Jesse it was not the sight of the bloody gash around his neck that froze our hearts.
It was the full story behind it.
Jesse survived on the streets of Jakarta — teeming with strays nobody cares about — thanks to a couple of kindhearted people, who looked out for him.
One day they noticed Jesse was not feeling well, looked him carefully all over, and were shocked to find five rubber bands tightly wrapped around his neck, causing him to fight for each breath. The people immediately removed the bands.
Freed but shaken, Jesse disappeared for a while.
When he returned, a noose of ten rubber bands ensnared his neck, and this time he was in distress, violently choking and coughing. Jesse had grown weary of contact and it took his guardians some time before they could lure him in, and once again remove the deadly ‘collar’.
The third time someone tried to kill Jesse they used a single thick rubber band…
Jesse hid away for a long time. He could not breathe. He could not swallow. The merciless noose was slowly working its way into his throat, suffocating him, cutting off arteries.
With his last breath Jesse returned to his neighborhood, emaciated, desperate, dying.
Somehow he was caught and rushed to a clinic where the horrified vets carefully cut away the rubber band, buried deep into Jesse’s neck. Parts of it had melted and fused with his flesh.
The huge bleeding gash, encircling Jesse’s neck, is heavily infected. The fight now is to stop that massive infection from spreading.
A synonym for ‘humanity’ reads ‘compassion’.
Join us in proving the human race deserves to exist. Join us in creating the world we want to live in — one good deed at a time.
Saying “I’m speechless” is not enough anymore. Saying “I’m in tears” does nothing.
And although I am praying for Jesse, and for others not so “lucky” as he was and rescued, I will do more and actually act.
My love and prayers for you dear Jesse. I hope we human are given the chance to make up for the wrong doings you have experienced.
