THE RESCUE
Late last night we took on a new rescue — a little stray cat was found lifeless in a park; the rescuers immediately rushed him to a vet clinic and contacted us for help.
NICK
An urgent examination discovered that the little kitten was in septic shock, severely dehydrated and hypothermic.
Tests revealed that Nick has feline calicivirus, which has caused an upper respiratory tract infection and possibly pneumonia. The disease has progressed to the stage where the kitten has developed the characteristic inflammation and ulcers on the tongue and mouth. If left unchecked, calicivirus can progress into a FCV-VSD — a virulent systemic infection — which can cause very high fever, swelling of the head and legs, liver damage, and can be fatal.
Nick has been admitted to the ICU where he is under constant observation and monitoring; he has been placed on an IV drip and is receiving intravenous fluid therapy, two antibiotics and an antiemetic. An immunostimulant treatment has been started to help his little body fight the disease. Kitty is being warmed up as he cannot maintain his body temperature. If the vets manage to stabilize him, Xrays will be done to examine the state of his lungs. Mouth swabs have been taken for testing.
The next 3-4 days will be critical for little Nick. If he does not develop severe pneumonia, he has a chance of fighting the disease off.
Nick is still a baby, not older than a couple of months. He hasn’t played enough, he hasn’t purred enough and he hasn’t chased enough butterflies.
It is not Nick’s time to go yet.
The world would be a darker place if we let this little light be extinguished — so today we ask you, please fight with us. Help us save Nick.
