We found out about Boycho from his rescuers who became reluctant witnesses to the vicious attack he suffered. While walking in the park, the people, who seconds later became the kitten’s saviors, noticed a pack of stray dogs chasing, then one of them catching and shaking a hapless small cat in the air. Such shaking by a hunting predator would often snap a prey’s spine, but Boycho miraculously avoided that fate. The rescuers ran towards the animals, screamed to scare the dogs away and picked up the lifeless body. Incredibly, the kitten was still breathing so they rushed him to a vet clinic.
During the next few days Boycho died and was resuscitated several times.
The kitten had suffered traumatic pneumothorax, which is characterized with the unwelcome presence of air in the pleural cavity and causes partial or complete lung collapse. The vets suspected perforation of the lungs or thoracic wall, often present with dog bite injuries. Multiple emergency needle thoracentesis — a procedure which removes fluid or air from around the lungs — had to be performed to prevent the little cat from suffocating, but eventually a chest tube had to be permanently placed for continuous draining of the air.
A few days later Boycho’s condition worsened and an emergency thoracotomy — a life-saving surgery which opens the chest cavity and allows direct access to the lungs — had to also be performed. During the operation the tear in the lung was repaired, with a small section of lung tissue being so damaged that it had to be removed.
Boycho is fighting but it is not proving an easy task for the little cat. The damage which the attack inflicted on his fragile body was massive and severe, and the vet team has just informed us that in addition to his other injuries, the abdominal trauma caused the development of traumatic hepatitis.
