STORM
During the leisurely summer holidays we secretly hoped that when it came time to return to the connected world, it may have changed for the better.
Sadly upon entering back into civilization we collided head on with hate and cruelty towards one of the animal species we share our lives with — dogs.
We collided head on with stray Storm, who was poisoned.
Speaking to horrified neighbors, whom she had crawled to, weak and foaming at the mouth, we pieced together the story. Storm is not just any stray, she is a TNR dog — she has been spayed, marked and returned to her area by a local animal control unit. She is a quiet, calm and gentle girl, about 2 years old and yesterday someone decided she should die.
Luckily Storm was rushed to a vet clinic in less than 20 minutes or she would have died in front of our very eyes.
(Most large dogs are more comfortable being examined on the floor rather than being lifted onto an examination table, especially when experiencing severe stress.)
HELP
Storm is in critical condition.
According to the vet team a type of fast-acting poison was used however it was impossible to determine what exactly; affected are the organs, cardio-respiratory system, central nervous system, and gastrointestinal tract. A full blood and biochemistry panel shows Storm’s kidneys and liver are in real danger.
Too late for an emesis induction (helping the patient vomit), an emergency procedure called gastric lavage was used to flush the stomach contents and decontaminate the gastrointestinal tract. Gastric lavage is a complex procedure which requires the installation of an intravenous catheter, sedation, intubation with an endotracheal tube and aspiration prevention. The lavage was successful and IV fluid therapy was started afterwards.
UPDATE | November 18th, 2019
Fast forward a few months, Storm survived her ordeal and we placed her in a foster home. Then a new miracle happened!
Stormy’s story reached far across the globe and touched a special person’s heart. An adopter came forward, ready to open their home and accept her in their life. The adopter is in the USA and Storm is in Bulgaria. Now all we have to do is buy Storm a ticket.
During the years we have tried and failed to find volunteers willing to accompany a dog or a cat from Bulgaria to the USA. Not many people fly between the two countries and when they do, they are fully absorbed by their own entry requirements. Once again we reached out to an animal logistics company we know and trust, Bulgarian Animal Transport.
The distance Storm must cover and her size set the cost of her trip at a formidable $2000. The price includes a transport cage, all flights, overnight care at the Lufthansa animal lounge in Frankfurt Airport and the logistics company fee.
PLEASE HELP STORM FLY HOME!
Every time we sit down to write a story we think about so many things. We worry whether we will succeed to correctly explain the medical aspect of the case. We wonder whether the dog or cat will manage to reach out from the photos and touch you. We hope to be able to draw you away from your daily routine for the few minutes required to help.
So once again we are sitting in front of our monitors, worrying, wondering and hoping.
“Will we write this well, will we touch their hearts, will Storm fly..?”
Transport fundraisers are the culmination of all our collective efforts to help an animal. Yet they are the hardest to pull off. Please donate today so Storm can fly home!
