MONDAY

If you think you know what surviving Monday means, please keep reading.

This Monday Fluff faced the worst, and lived to tell the story.

Somehow having strayed onto a major boulevard of a large city, Fluff was hit by a car. Perhaps even a few cars. His broken body was found by kind people who rushed him to a veterinary clinic where a grim picture unfolded.

Fluff’s skull, upper and lower jaw were in pieces.

Apart from breaking his head and causing multiple severe fractures, the impact had caused cerebral oedema. This means Fluff’s brain had swollen and the swelling was affecting his motor functions, vision, breathing. Fluff’s pupils were dilated and he was unable to control his body. The vet team immediately administered pain relief and slightly sedated the boy to stop him from constantly hitting his head in the walls and bars of his compartment.

Thankfully the Xrays and ultrasound examination revealed that there was no internal damage, and most important — no damage to the spine. His body was covered in surface wounds and one ear was badly torn.

Thank you if you made it this far. Now on to the good news.

HOPE

Fluff is a young boy, and he is strong. He can survive this and he can recover fully. He can live, he wants to live and we want to grant him that wish.

Fluff will need a series of surgeries, the most urgent one of which has already been performed, applying fixation to secure the worst of the damaged jaw. During the emergency stabilizing surgery a large part of Fluff’s upper jaw, together with a canine tooth, simply came off, and could not be reattached. When the site heals enough for the fixation to be removed, the damage will be reassessed and next steps planned.

Look who lifted his head up!

A few days ago Fluff was hit by a car. His broken body was found by kind people who rushed him to a veterinary clinic where for now we are winning the fight for his life. Fluff survived the emergency surgery which attempted to restore the worst damage to his head.

If you haven’t yet, please read his story, and leave him a note of encouragement. Fluff will need a great home once he is out of the woods, so help SHARE his story.

UNEXPECTED SURGERY FOR FLUFF!

Yesterday Fluff’s vet team informed us that two of his teeth, damaged by the impact he suffered, are interfering with his eating. Fluff is not able to feed himself and the teeth must be removed immediately.

This new surgery, performed so close to the initial one, is relatively risky as the site is unstable and the fixation has not had time to properly work. Please keep Fluff in your thoughts today and help us pay for his medical care by donating today.

Can you guess who this handsome boy is!?

Fluff is feeling oh, so much better these days! He has come out of his hidey-hole in his foster home, has started paying attention to cat toys and has taken to quietly tailing his foster around the place. Isn’t it amazing!

Fluff is waiting for his family to find him, please help share his story!

UPDATE | March 6, 2018

Fluff is in trouble!

A few weeks ago Fluff’s foster parents reported he was not feeling very well. It seemed he was suffering from what initially looked like a viral, then bacterial infection. Fluff had discharge from his nose and eyes, and was prescribed treatment for the latter and immune strengthening therapy for the former.

He did not improve however, his condition in fact worsening to the extent where we had to rush him to the vet clinic so congested that he was nearly unable to breathe.

After a series of Xrays, the vet team informed us that they have found a large mass in Fluff’s nasopharyngeal cavity, which could be anything from a big polyp to life-threatening lymphoma. A rhinoscopy must be scheduled to investigate further and take  samples for biopsy if the tissue is found to look suspicious.

If the growth is a polyp then surgery will have to be performed to remove it as it is effectively obstructing Fluff’s airways.

If it is lymphoma.. with the memory of our precious Alex lost to that monster all too fresh, we can only pray that it isn’t.

UPDATE | March 7, 2018

Fluff could not wait so we scheduled and performed an emergency rhinoscopy yesterday.

What the vet team discovered when the rhinoscopy examination allowed them to get a good look inside Fluff’s head perplexed them and frightened us.

The thing inside our boy’s nasopharyngeal cavity is unfortunately not a polyp. It is large, dark, round and with clean lines, so similar to a ball that initially the vets considered the possibility that Fluff may have inhaled a toy! At closer look however they observed that the surface of the object was wrapped in blood vessels. The growth is obstructing Fluff’s airways and protrudes back into his head.

The vets told us the growth is unusual and they were careful not to guess in advance what it may be, but their palpable concern managed to cause proper panic in our team.

We have agreed to emergency surgery tomorrow when a team of senior surgeons and oncologists will work on removing the invader.

UPDATE | March 9, 2018

Fluff’s surgery had unexpected results.

What the vets pulled out of our boy’s head may after all turn out to be a polyp rather than a tumorous growth. The reason it had seemed weird during the rhinoscopy was the fact that a necrotic process had started, and part of it was dead, causing the unusual dark color.

We will wait for the biopsy results before we allow ourselves to celebrate, but for now we at least managed to exhale. Thank you for being with Fluff during this ordeal and please be warned the photos from the surgery below are not for the faint-hearted.

Not a tumor!!!

Histology results are in and the answer is — the growth in Fluff’s head was not a tumor! Indeed the reason for its weird appearance was a necrotic process, which had caused the unusual dark color. The growth was a huge polyp, which probably started forming due to tissue damage following the multiple fractures Fluff suffered when he was hit by a car. Our baby is doing well, eating nicely, breathing even better!

UPDATE | April 16, 2018

Fluff is now back at his foster home and taking it easy after his recent ordeal.

Fluff seems to relax a bit more with every visit to the clinic.  Having been rescued as a totally wild tom who originally spent his time hiding away from his fosters, on the cat bed not allowing anyone to touch him — he has now slowly grown into a calm and easygoing boy, who comes for cuddles and who may even grace your lap with his mighty presence.

Thinking back to the days when we had to send volunteers to help Fluff’s foster family to catch him and place him in a carrier for each visit to the clinic, images like the one below warm our hearts beyond measure.
