EVIL

If you’ve been with us for a while you know by now that we do not exaggerate human cruelty towards animals. When we are certain that an animal is a victim of the city, negligence or an accident — we don not twist facts to add drama and attract attention. In this world full of darkness and suffering it is important not to spread it further.

When however we come across pure evil we are obliged to expose it, shining a bright light on its ugly face — because evil thrives in darkness and hates the light.

ROCKY

Roky — the handsome, silky soft, kind and sweet lab mix — was shot.

In the head.

With a rifle.

This is the conclusion of one of the senior orthopedic specialists of our clinic, who is fighting for Rocky’s life, after an emergency examination and roentgenography, performed upon admission. Rocky was shot not with a shotgun, which disperses a cartridge of rapidly decelerating pellets, and causes multiple but often superficial injuries. This beautiful child of mother nature was shot with a rifle, and the bullet caused a high-velocity injury, shattering Rocky’s jaw to pieces, spreading shrapnel into neighboring soft tissues, and missing his spine by a hair.

According to the vet the projectile characteristics, the fragments’ location, and the angle of entry are testimony that this was not an accident. Someone deliberately tried to kill Rocky.

Sadly this is not all. It looks like after he was shot Rocky was also hunted by a pack of dogs, who inflicted deep bite wounds all over his body. For days this sweet innocent dog must have wandered around provincial roads and abandoned houses — with a terrible injury and infected wounds — until his rescuers found him and sought help.

RESCUING ROCKY

We rushed Rocky to our clinic as soon as we found out about him, where after discovering the exact state of his jaw we proceeded with the vet team’s recommendation of immediate surgery — before we managed to secure any funds or even show him to you. Rocky is not only incredibly handsome, he is also amazingly soft-natured, and calmly allowed the vets to examine at length his shattered jaw and torn body, despite the pain and fear that must have been gripping him.

The surgery cleaned the area from fragments, bone, skin and dirt, and provided an opening for the pus to start draining. An external fixation device was installed, with multiple pins securing the complex jaw fracture. A large piece of bone was found to be irreparably destroyed and had to be removed, so a bone graft from Rocky’s shoulder will have to be implanted at a later stage. A few broken teeth were left in the mouth as they were needed for stabilization of the fixation device, but will have to be extracted later on.

Rocky suffered at the hands of humans but, amazingly, he still trusts people. He allowed us and the vets to touch him, pet him and even looked for contact. His trust is helping us believe in good, believe that we can, together, help bring a world where such horrors don’t happen.

UPDATE | January 26, 2018

A smile for your Friday!

Rocky has been discharged into one of our most dedicated and experienced foster homes close to the veterinary clinic, where he will be returning for check-ups during the next weeks. The care for him is complicated, he is being spoon-fed as he cannot eat on his own; the fixation device requires thorough cleaning after each meal; his multiple wounds are being dressed a few times a day and he demands lots and lots of cuddles. Rocky’s foster family are doing everything to make him comfortable, including knitting him a custom-sized warm winter blazer. Rocky loves the attention, which we are guessing he never came across in his previous life.

UPDATE | February 8, 2018

We have a week to secure funds for Rocky’s 2nd surgery.

It has now been a few weeks since we performed the first emergency surgery, which cleaned fragments, bone, skin and dirt, and installed an external fixation device to secure the multiple fractures. During the second operation the site of the first will be thoroughly examined and any issues corrected; the problem of the large missing piece of jaw bone will be addressed; and multiple damaged teeth left untouched for the purposes of temporary stabilization will be extracted. Rocky will also be neutered as he is now stable enough for the procedure.

Because fighting for the lives of the three furkids we rescued recently — Frankie, Rocky and Leah — requires a serious financial investment, we really need your support right now. Please help Rocky get the operations he needs by donating today.

UPDATE | February 27, 2018

Time has come for the external fixation device to be removed during what we are hoping will be the last planned surgical procedure for our sweet boy Rocky! His recent 2nd operation saw the vet team thoroughly examine his jaw, extract numerous damaged teeth, Rocky was neutered and the vets determined that the whole site was healing perfectly.

Please help us pay for Rocky’s last surgical challenge and let’s show him just how much he matters.

UPDATE | March 2, 2018

Rocky’s surgery was a success!

The fixation device has been removed and the vet team is very happy with how the jaw is healing! The senior orthopedic  surgeon of our clinic is even hopeful that grafts may not be needed as the xRays show healthy new bone growth in the area of the missing bone section.

Here is a very special and heartwarming photo — Rocky’s last photo with the external fixation device, just before he entered surgery.

Thank you for being part of Rocky’s journey and please stay with him till the happy end. This lovely boy is a lab mix and is looking for his humans. Email us on adoptions@myletsadopt.com or write to our Facebook page Let´s Adopt! Global if there is room in your home and heart for him.

UPDATE | April 13, 2018

Rocky has fully recovered from his terrible ordeal. His jaw is doing great, he is eating and loving life.

There is, however, a cloud hanging over our pup. His loving foster mom is scheduled for surgery soon and will be unable to use one of her hands for a few months. Since she is one of our most overloaded foster homes, Rocky will have to be placed in boarding.

Watch Rocky run in the videos below, see him enjoy life and help him avoid boarding — by adopting the best dog in the world! Message us on Let’s Adopt! Global to discuss adoption.
