One who breaks an unjust law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.
– Martin Luther King

This is the most important series of blog post I have ever written, as it could have an influence over the fate of the Stray Dogs of Turkey,  one of the thorniest issues in a country that for centuries has struggled to balance religious and superstitious beliefs with it’s own communal conscience. There will be 3 blogs. This is the first. At the end of the page you will see the link to a Facebook Group. Please join, that Group will be a Working Group from where to lead the Resistance to the horror that if left unchecked will engulf the lives of our animals, and ours.  Please, before you forget, SHARE this post NOW…   Now please, read on…

The plea of the Turkish Animals is full of contradictions. On one side the streets are filled with abandoned and neglected dogs but it’s precisely because of that reason I would argue that Turkey one of the places where humans have a higher degree of tolerance towards street animals. Whilst in many western countries a street dog would be routinely rounded up and killed after a stray hold, in Turkey rare is the city street that doesn’t have it’s own “neighborhood watchdog”, usually an old mutt that took residence in that particular spot years ago and never left.

Those dogs are usually cared for and fed by some of the inhabitants of the street, they will provide food and water for him, will have him treated at the vet if injured or sick, and will protect him in case of danger. I know this, and anyone that has lived in a Turkish city for longer than the length of a tourist visit will be able to confirm it.

You see… the thing is, whilst countries like the United States are in the middle of a War to make the country No Kill and end up with the mass slaughter of millions of innocent companion animals, Turkey is already No Kill by law. It’s the implementation of the Law that is faulty, the fact that the municipalities break the law they are meant to uphold, and that in many instances the Turkish sheltering system is becoming a breeding ground for criminal activity and corruption. We have seen this both in the largest as as well as smallest cities all over the country.

Last century, the ruling Ottomans tried to “dispose” of the city dogs by shipping as many as they could to Hayirsiz Ada, a nearby deserted island where they would die a horrible death, without food and water, forced to eat each other until there were none left. This was done not once, but several times, and the horrors of those “deportations” have now become part of Turkey’s collective memory.

For years, the Turkish Animal Rights Community fought to strengthen the law, to bring proper sanctions to crimes such as animal rape and animal torture and to hold municipalities accountable for their crimes when conducting mass killing campaigns. And the government listened for a while, or so, it seemed to, until recently, it came up with a number of proposed amendments to the Law that showed it’s true colors.

The draft document, prepared in secret was presented for approval last week, and it’s a nightmare. The Government of Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan has prepared a  horror that could only be designed by a hateful madman.

The amendments to the law bring back the fear of the dark times of Turkey’s past. This time stray animals will not be sent to an island, the new Law proposes the creation of “Natural Life Parks” where stray dogs and cats will be rounded up and taken. Make no mistake, bearing in mind the pathetic inability of the Turkish government to run proper a proper sheltering network and rehabilitation facilities we have every single reason to believe that those so-called “Natural Parks” will be nothing but death camps of the worst kind. Fenced areas in the forest where thousands of animals, both dogs and cats, will be left to die slow and agonizing deaths without food, and water. Many will die of starvation, others will fight to the death over whatever they can find. They will end up eating each other, like they did in the past.

Death camps a la Turka. Places run by the kind criminals and animal abusers that unfortunately end up working in the shelter system. And all of this, payed with your taxes. Regardless of whether you are a Turkish citizen or whether you live in Europe, this sinister network of Turkish death camps, will be financed with your money.

The Horror.

Those amendments, threatened, if passed, to bring genocide to Turkey in a scale never seen before.

Another crucially important change in the law is the introduction of Breed Specific Legislation. Owners of dogs whose breed is considered dangerous will be forced to surrender their animals to either be killed or incarcerated for life in those “Natural Life Parks”. Paris the dog, belongs to one of our dearest friends, she is the one of the kindest and most loving dogs I’ve ever met… She will be one of the first ones to die.

We, as Let’s Adopt! cannot and will not allow this to happen. It was Martin Luther King who said: One who breaks an unjust law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.

So, from here, we encourage all our members to:

1. FIGHT this proposed legislation and attend the rallies planned in your cities on September 30. We will send a clear message to the government that today’s Turkish Society has changed, and that the culture of fear, deportations and genocide that forever marked the country, has no place in the 21st Century. This LAW SHALL NOT PASS.

and if it does…

2. RESIST and DISOBEY. Let’s Adopt! will offer financial and legal assistance to people incurring in sanctions because disobeying these unjust laws. We, as a network, will work towards supporting the rescue efforts of dogs affected by the planned Breed Specific Legislation as well as supporting citizens, neighbors, organizing themselves to defend the street animals under their care. We will, in effect, support and fund, civil disobedience, and we hope, other Turkish Animal Organizations will do exactly the same.

We sincerely hope, the Government will reconsider this proposal… If it doesn’t we bow never to stop fighting for our animals.

Two ways to take action:

1. Join THE FIGHT FOR THE TURKISH STREET DOGS, a closed group on FB that will coordinate the actions against this atrocious Law.
This is  THE FIGHT FOR THEIR LIVES… Join us please…

2.  DOWNLOAD and PRINT the Hi-Res Poster we prepared for this occasion. If you live in Turkey please spread it all over streets, schools, car windows, anywhere you can think of. Don’t worry about asking permissions, JUST DO IT.

3. SIGN THE PETITION.  It’s been prepared to be delivered to the responsible people at the government. This petition will be heard by those responsibly for this planned atrocity.

4. Please SHARE this post… help us create the kind of outrage necessary for people to take action.

5. Watch this documentary… it’s a historical view on the Turkish Stray dog problem, it will help you understand what we are fighting against here…

This is the fight of our lives, the fight for THEIR lives…. THIS CRIMINAL LAW SHALL NOT PASS!!!!

Viktor Larkhill.

LUNA WAS RAPED… and then killed..
She was discovered in this position. The Law was to be amended to make animal rape into a crime.
Instead the Turkish Government has tried to turn the animal welfare law into a legal justification for GENOCIDE.
The final solution, KILL ALL STRAY ANIMALS BY STARVING THEM TO DEATH IN DEATH CAMPS.

  22. Will the government listen if you start a petition and thousands around the world sign it?

I recently spent several weeks in Istanbul and noticed numerous stray dogs in and around the posh, tourist districts. They all seemed healthy and well fed, and no one bothered them. They had a red tag clipped to their ears, and I was told they are officially owned by the government, which is responsible for their care, and no one is allowed to harm or adopt them. Is this true?

These death camps are a terrible idea – utterly barbaric. I can’t believe a country so newly prosperous could be considering a return to such barbarism. Humane treatment of animals is the hallmark of an advanced society. I hope we can help you win this war, even though we are far away.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Anna, no.. whomever told you that didn’t explain himself correctly.
The red tag on their ear doesn’t mean they are owned by the government, it means they have been neutered and vaccinated against rabies, that’s all. If someone wants to adopt the dog he just has to take him home.
Problem is, very few people sees them as worthy of a home, so they are left on the streets….

  23. Bambi Tuckey says:

    SIGNED!

PLEASE do not put these animals in any parks. In my area we do trap, spay/neuter, release. It hIt is the only method to control the population. Without it, animals will always continue to find their way into towns from all over. The ongoing costs of parks will never solve anything. I have faith that you will do this right thing that I am telling you about. Regardless of your beliefs, God makes the rain fall on the just and the unjust. He tells us: Philippians 3:2 ESV / 4 helpful votes
Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh.

Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel. If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying down under its burden, you shall refrain from leaving him with it; you shall rescue it with him. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’

I implore you to show mercy, the mercy that I believe is in your heart. I am thanking you ahead of time for listening and for not putting these animals in parks. Respectfully…

    Moreover,

animals are created by God and we have to respect them and take care of them

  30. There are better solutions, why kill those poor animals? What kind of education or personal teaching these people received to do all these things and decide to kill lives?

Humanity: the quality of being humane; benevolence.

  40. EVELINA MAZILU says:

STOP GENOCIDE ANIMALS TURCHIA. Please no photo mutch hororr. Poor animals.

  41. Lily Margo says:

  42. This sucks BIG time!!! What kind of an inhuman law is this? Why not utilize brains a bit better & try to see that sterilizing / neutering / vaccinating strays & then letting them be, is just so much more sensible?!!! For anyone who might ask where funds for this will come from… well, HELLO?!!! donation campaigns are not new – you simply need to take the initiative.

  43. Leigh Ann Dias says:

HHow can people be so heartless and cruel to do something like this to these poor animals!

  44. Patricia Fleming says:

I wonder what is wrong with people who would do this to sweet little innocent animals…these people are 1 step from abusing children. I would say may God have mercy on their souls but I don’t really hope so.

  49. Udita Chatterjee says:

I am sickened by the atrocities committed towards the stray dogs. I am an Indian and in India also this is common. The most painful thing is these animals cannot speak for themselves and which gives us Humans the responsibility to protect them and shelter them and not abuse them and kill them.We cannot let out our frustrations on them and hence abuse them.

  50. Amy Derkacz says:

I cannot believe these horrifying measures. I am so saddened and heartbroken thinking about the fate of the strays if people do not rise against this injustice and be the voice for those who cannot speak, our furry friends. Animals deserve a decent quality of life, they are not just ome sort of a sub-being that is unworthy of our care and compassion, they are wholly deserving of our care, compassion and protection. Viktor, I really hope that you get lots of support for this very important cause and I will continue to spread the word and support this mission from abroad.

  66. Louise Guthrie says:

Grow up Turkey. This is the 21st century. People created the problem; dogs didn’t. FIX IT HUMANELY.

  67. Linda Robinson-Pardo says:

Our world is said to have evolved, but has it? The Human race is the only species that torture for pleasure. So who’s the animal? We are still a barbaric world. If not more than ever before. We must unite against the heinous crimes against innocent animals and take a stand to say enough. It’s time for action!

  73. Viktor, you are deluding yourself because your desire to do good is skewed by your inability to understand certain facts.

2 issues will illuminate two truths in Turkey which will help you reach a compromise.

    1) Sheer numbers. Neutering is regularly disregarded by misinformed municipalities here and stray animals have grown to prolific populations. There WILL be a culling, unless a huge sum of money is set aside to feed them by the state. Individuals, as much good as they might want to do, are often irresponsible and are keyboard knights, and can’t walk the walk.

Unless a grassroots movement raises enough money to save these animals, they will and must be somehow brought down to manageable numbers, and then a no-compromise neutering program must be applied.

In Beşiktaş there is an average of 3 stray cats per Street. STREET. This statistic belongs to animal loving organizations, and it can’t be denied that it is probably lowered for lobbying reasons.

Neutering and a NO HOLDS BARRED neutering after somehow raising enough money to responsibly take care of these animals is the only way. Unless all those thousands who talk the talk put their wallet where their mouth is, then they have no right to complain. You cant just ban state from trying something, while the individual tries NOTHING in terms of monetary involvement.

    2) Rabies.

Rabies in Eurasia is still a huge problem and Turkey is in the brink of leading that problem should an outbreak begin in major cities. Rabies shots are annual but you and I both know the municipalities do a half assed job of this. They vaccinate them once, and then hastalavista. The vets employed bu the mun.s are incredibly apathetic when it comes to this greatest of viral diseases.

Istanbulites think rabies is an extinct disease, while it is NOT. It remains endemic to all of Eastern Europe and Anatolia, and you don’t joke around with rabies.

IF one well-meaning child dies, or a couple die from rabies as a result of a major outbreak, no protest will stop the flood of culling that will happen to stray animals.

To avoid this we must all work hard and be both pragmatic and intelligent when it comes to solutions.

Raise Private Funds – Neuter – Vaccinate.

    No other solution.

  74. Patti Mc Gan says:

This has got to stop!! Turkey is acting as murderers and need to be stop immediately. They will pay for this cruel and unnatural treatement they are doing to these helpless animals. We should speak out and act as caring individuals and tell them that this is just not acceptable to the world and they will pay in the next life for these cruel acts they are doing to helpless beings. Shame on them! I hope Carma hits them soon.

  75. You are sick people!Unbelieveable what you doing!Dont kill pour animal, help them!

  76. KILLERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  77. IloveANIMALS says:

OH, god…how do people dare to touch something they didn’t created !!!! if something really happens on 21.12.12 it won’t be the end of the world…it would be our punishment for what we People have done to this world. 2 years ago I read something on the internet that changed my life. someone wrote that animals can help people with different illnesses . I suffered from epilepsy, but my seizures stopped 2 months after i adopted my cats!!! believe it or not i had my last seizure 2 years ago. now i’ve adopted a street dog … and I can’t be prouder!!! someone who never loved an animal, never felt the unconditional love !!!!! why killing them? we should not be afraid of animals… people are the evil creatures in this world.. be afraid of people around you, not from dogs and cats who are struggling to survive in this cruel world !!!

  78. Why don’t you publish my comment. Its concise, valid and intelligent.

Don’t be the censor to friends of your cause.

    1. Viktor Larkhill says:

Mehmet, it’s published… just need some time to write a proper reply to you. I could reply in two lines but it wouldn’t set the record straight.

  81. saw the documentary, very disturbing to see all those beautiful trusting animals left to die, there is such ignorance in the world and a lot of it in the name of “God” which is even more disturbing, this is not “God’s” work but the work of evil disgusting humans

  82. Jeannine sinding says:

  85. Julie Sykes says:

This is diabolical, the person who came up with this atrocious idea is either mentally ill or seriously evil and I think he should be put in one of these parks permanantly.

  86. Terri Heagney says:

It is a horrific fact that the un-educated do unspeakable things. We, as human beings are capable of torturing animals without batting an eyelid.
There are solutions to the problems in Turkey, but cannot be solved by the Government just stopping the killing.
First of all, the general population, the citizens of Turkey need to be educated, day and night, on radio and television, to feed their animals, to inoculate them against diseases, to supply fresh water. The veterinarians in Turkey need to be compensated by the Government to sterilize the females and neuter the males to stop the dogs from breeding. The population will ask “why should I bother”, so let the Government, out of the huge holiday maker’s money they receive each year, give the dog owners a monetary incentive.
Secondly, the Government should CEASE IMMEDIATELY, in using criminals to do the dirty work. If the criminals are already desensitized from murdering someone, this “work” will NOT rehabilitate them. If there is an over population of strays that can not be homed, do the HUMAN thing and give the dogs/cats a gentle injection. Poisoning is EXTREMELY CRUEL AND LENGTHY !!! Maybe our countries can lobby the United Nations for a moratorium on Turkey and lay down embargoes till it becomes civilized towards all animals within it’s borders. I travel abroad frequently and had, at one stage, become somewhat interested in doing a side trip into Turkey. I shall now BOYCOTT Turkey !!!! I pray others will do everything they can also.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress
