Maya screams could be heard from across the street. It was a heartbreaking plea for help, a feline request for assistance.
Maya was in extreme pain, with every effort to get some air her intestines would get entangled in her lungs. She was vomiting blood.
Maya was about to die.
How did this beautiful loved and pampered animal found herself at death’s door?
On Sunday the 27 of November, her owners took her to the Suadiye Veterinary Clinic in Istanbul , where she was due to have her haircut.
A couple of hours later, when her owners pick her up, she was partly unconscious. The explanation she was given is that she was administered anesthetics to calm her down.
Upon arrival home it was clear Maya was not well, she reacted with pain to the touch, could barely move, wouldn’t drink or eat. When the owners called the clinic vet. Emel Kökçü told them this was normal behavior for a cat after being given anesthetics.
But something was clearly wrong. From that moment on all calls to Vet. Emel Kökçü went unanswered.
An X-Ray, that showed that Maya’s diaphragm had gone through severe trauma and had been broken. It was clear to me that the injury had taken place during the botched haircut appointment. Judging by the severity of the injury I believe the hairdresser must have applied all his weight and his elbow over Maya’s stomach. Maya had a 4 cms tear in the diaphragm and that her intestines, liver and kidneys were all tangled up and pushing against her lungs.
Vet. Emel Kökçü was called by Maya’s owners that explained her the severity of the situation and she accepted to cover the costs of operating Maya.
Sadly, her offer to assist wouldn’t last for long. The following morning Emel Kökçü spoke to Maya’s owners to tell them that she wouldn’t be honoring her promise to help, that Maya was a very unruly cat, and this accident happened for a reason (!).
Maya continues fighting for her life. Her internal organs are severely damaged and she may not make it.

OMG they must have left there cat there thinking she was in great hands not knowing what suffering she was going through at the hands of some sick torturor he should be hang up god I’m beginning to hate humans!
Very sad to hear and that the vet will not honoured her promise. I suggest she changes her profession as a vet should have the interest of the animal at heart which is clearly not the case here. Most cats would be unruly while being groomed/cut. A very stupid explanation which she hopes people will believe. I do not. If she was a genuine person she wouldnt have hesitated to heal the cat to her best ability. It was injured at her clinic and therefore is her responsibility. Excessive force has been used which resulted in nothing but abuse and cruelty to this poor beautiful cat.
I hope no one uses this vet as i wouldnt trust her with another animal!
The owner should go to the court with the all proof of the new vet who is helping her recover. That kind of places and vets should pay the cost of their behavior.
How can you be so inhumane? When you became a veterinarian I believe you swore to “do no harm” and to “strive to cure.” What has happened to you to cause you to be so uncaring and cruel?
i just have to say that someone should tell the vet to do their damn job and care for the animals not hurt them or find a reason not to help a animal!!! their job is to be nuturing caring to the animal kind….. AS FOR THE SALON WHY THE HELL DIDNT ANYONE GO THEIR AND TALK TO THEM AND DEMAND A ESPLANATION!!! i guess in AMERICA WE DO THING LITTLE DIFERENT! That poor baby this could happen anywhere I vaguly remember this happening years back at a groomer. This vet should be hgeld down and beaten and suffer the pain and con sequences that they did to this poor defenseless cat maya. shame on that vet. poull their license to never practice againj
Can the Turkish government take the vet’s license away? The family needs to pursue this. I’m sure if funding is needed, this organization or another animal rights org could raise the funds to go to court and do something about this woman. She obviously doesn’t screen her groomers or oversee the treatment of the animals. Her lack of taking responsibility for the injury tells me she’s in the business for the money, not the care of the animals. She needs to be stripped of her license!

I have groomed dogs and cats for ten years, this type of injury, would in my opinion, be something done as intentionally cruel and would be very hard to have been caused accidentally..
Impossible to be an accident with this type of trauma to a sedated animal.
I sincerely hope no-one ever takes an animal anywhere near this person again. Not only is she unfit to treat animals, she takes no responsibility for the damage she has done. May you go bankrupt and lose everything you have worked for.You absolutely deserve to. This is YOUR responsibility Emel Kokcu and the injuries and cost of veterinary care in trying to save this cat are on your hands under an obligation of care. This message relaying your wilful neglect will be global in a matter of hours. I suggest you accept your responsibility, apologise and take on whatever cost is necessary to try and save this gorgeous cats life or give up your work in animal care as it is blatantly obvious at the moment that ‘caring’ is not part of your agenda. The title should note that this didn’t happen at a salon–it happened at a veterinarian’s office–way, way worse. I am so sorry this happened. I hate to leave my cat unattended in someone else’s hands–even those of a veterinarian. I hope this office is shut down and that those responsible are never allowed to go near an animal for the rest of their lives. It’s a horrible cautionary tale: there are times when we have to leave our companion animals unattended and into the hands of someone else. Grooming is not such a time. Demand to be present when your companion animal is having nonsurgical, nonquarantine, nonxray, nonemergency, etc. treatments. If your vet or groomer refuses, then go somewhere else. So sorry for this family. They are not at fault. No one should have to suspect that their companion animal is going to be brutalized at the veterinarian’s office. Unfortunately, we all have to expect the worst to protect our loved ones. So sad that is the way things have to be. I hope Maya is not in pain anymore.

This vet is definitely not in the right profession. I do want to inform to people that cats generally do not have to have their coats cut, unless their fur is matted to the point that it restricts movement. Cutting their fur causes stress on them that is unnecessary and can affect their internal body temperature. If you are considering this thinking that you are helping them in hot weather, you are wrong. If you are considering it for cosmetic reasons or for the “lion” cut, this is also wrong. Long-haired cats’ bodies are accustomed to their hair being as it is and their systems are adjusted for it. When you cut their hair it is a shock to their system, much the same as taking off all your clothes and jumping into an ice cold lake. They can become very ill from doing this so it should be advised not to do this unless it is done for extreme matting. That said, I feel very sorry for this little girl. This was clearly abuse and the owners should pursue litigation against the salon and the vet. Hope the little mite is going to survive her ordeal.

This vet definitely needs to find another profession! This kind of thing happening in the U.S. certainly would mean jail time for those involved in this animal cruelty to this cat! Poor baby! I pray that she will recover and this vet will be put out of business permanently!

Any groomer who would do something like this is incompetent & should lose his/her license! This kind of treatment for any animal – no matter how “unruly” – is inexcusable! They should be responsible for any & all veterinary bills incurred in this incident.

When i was on vacantion with my cat, he was looking ill and among a lot of clinics i choose only this one. Doctors are very good specialists, good service, my cat was looking calm while doctor was checking it. I got all information about what i need to do next time in the same situation, doctor spoke with me very polite. Even cant imagine that somebody can write this! Omg! I have a lot of friends with pets and all of them are the patients of Suadiye vet clinic. And all this people are living in istanbul . Besides, Dr. Kerkutloglu , as i ve heard he is an expert of veterinaire medicine, so i think its simple impossible.
My opinion, that u, want only to disturb this doctor. PEOPLE ! Plz check if this information is correct !!! I ll be not surprised if its only one business struggle! Its not good, anyway, to abuse this people? Its simple unpolite !

Viktor Larkhill I went a lot of times to this clinik! Never i’ve heard such things about this doctor but during last week i can see that a lot of people SAW THIS CAT, and everybody SURE that exectly THIS VET did this !

Hallo, I’m living in UK. I ve read all this post and all comments. Just want to say that I’m in shock! Yes, I love animals very much! Since my chldhood i have pets. Yes, i saw a lot of bad vets, n sure i saw very good specialists too. This prosecution are very dangerous, which can have a significant impact in the career of doctor. As minimum he must introduce the evidences of her guilt, maybee some papers that we can understand that its exectly her actions. But wht we can read in earlier that operation ( we can see pictures after operation and i can understand that it was already made) wasnt made by Dr. Kokçu. So I’m wondering, if its not her work, so why this ” clever owner of Maya” wrote that all that did Dr. Kokçu? How he can proove?

Allegedly took place on Sunday November 27 at our clinic and is spreading through social media to comment about the task I know the slander notice.
Cat owner of a gentleman, not only for the purpose of economic benefit from their particular clinic in a hairdressing service which is provided to an injury that had occurred 4 days after the event, an event that took place the same day as the clinic was launched. As a veterinarian, which cause damage to a defenseless creature, who condone, ignore those who live in the meantime, I am ashamed of being.

Status as of yesterday, you had referred to the prosecutor’s office. This news started a smear campaign being conducted through the gentleman going to hold information about the compensation and I would like to share with you.

how is Maya now?
Maya is doing much better. For the last two days she has been able to eat on her own, until now we had to use an injector and make her eat mashed food.
I am so very sorry this happened to your Maya. I hope she is healing well, not only from the physical trauma but the emotional trauma too. I see all the evils done to animals and it breaks my heart. It strengthens my resolve to do the very best for the animals in my own care. I have been very, very fortunate to have only dealt with loving, compassionate care professionals when they have been needed. It is heartbreaking that Maya was not so, it is even worse that we should have to worry about those we depend on for professional advice and service doing harm to our pets. I hope for the very best for Maya.
