Those of you that follow our work are used to see some pretty extreme situations.  Many of them take place in the Republic of Turkey, not because this place is worst than any other, but because the Headquarters of Let’s Adopt are in Istanbul.

The truth, is, what goes on here is horrible, but it’s horrible just about anywhere, so no point in going on about it.

But the one thing that we see here far too often are disasters caused not by deliberate cruelty to animals, but by a lethal cocktail minimum levels of education, total lack of common sense, and a massive dosage of stupidity.

Just a few days ago we were shocked by the case of Alev, a dog that had been dosed with fuel and set alight. The owner, a person whose IQ must have been just about half of the one of a cow didn’t, in his words, intend to harm the dog. He was just trying to get rid of fleas, so he dosed the dog with gasoline and lit him up.  The result… no more fleas. No more dog either.

Meral Olcay and her team did their best to treat her but Alev died three days later due to the shock of her injuries.

Just when I was starting to come to terms with Alev’s passing, today I was forced deal with the effects of ignorance and idiocy over the life of an animal… listen to this.

Late afternoon I received a tearful call from an “animal lover”… she was heartbroken because her boyfriend had left her. I immediately offered my total sympathy and told her it would be all right, heartbreak is always painful to endure, but my niceness and concern dissipated when she told me that she needed me to take her 12 cats because she had no idea what to do with them and none of her friends want to help her (so much for the fabled support system provided by Turkish families)

By that point my heart beat had slowed down to a halt and my mind had wondered to an imaginary peaceful place where people like that girl are drowned at birth.

What kind of imbecile adopts a blind kitty whose eyes had to be pulled out because of severe infection, neglects to neuter her, breeds her so that she can experience the miracle of life and then dumps the whole lot, the blind cat, her kittens and the rest of the cats that she has been collecting over the years onto me ???  What kind of lunatic tells me she loves the cat like if she was her daughter and them dumps ALL OF THEM in a box at our clinic ???

I could give you all the name of that person, but I won’t do that… because deep down I believe she is sorry and embarrassed for being such a failure.. and if she is not, she will be the moment she reads this.

And now, to our members in Turkey, I need to ask for your help in dealing with this. We have 12 cats in our clinic, abandoned to their fate by their “human mother”. Two of them are blind, one is a tripod, two are in perfect health and the rest are kittens.
