Is it ok for an animal rescuer to wear leather shoes?
|
A simple question: Do you feel it is ok for an animal rescuer to wear leather shoes?
This is the kind of simple question that delivered in the right context can break the most affable and convivial of dinner parties and turn it into a cake fight
I suspect there is a different answer for every animal rescuer out there, one that will depend on his personal convictions, on his own moral code, a code that, remember, tends to be like DNA, we all have a different one.
We are animal rescuers, we rescue cats a dogs and just about every other kind of animal out there, including lambs, rabbits, goats, birds, fishes, a lion and a crocodile.
Being individual animal rescuers was not enough for us. We felt we could do more, so we founded Let’s Adopt, a group that has directly saved thousands and inspired many more across the world..
But guess what? We are not nor ever pretended to be a role model for anyone and certainly we are not saints. We just happened to have created a platform to rescue handicapped and animals everyone else considers unadoptable and educate about animal rescue and animal nutrition.
That’s all.
Let’s Adopt is not an animal rights group, it’s an animal rescue network.
The true hypocrisy would be for us to endlessly spend out life talking about animal rights and promoting veganism AND THEN kill the animals we rescue (like PETA does), or go around wearing fur, or leather products, or eating animal by-products, or even watch Lassie films.
Let’s Adopt! is an animal rescue that focus on the most difficult cases, the ones considered unadoptable by anyone else, on those that truly have no chance, that’s what we do, and we are amongst the best in the world.
Some of our members eat meat, others are vegetarians, others are vegan, we even have members who survive on a diet of Chocolate and Gummy bears… all of them are embraced amongst us because within the best of their abilities they save lives, every day. We don’t only talk about it or waste our time in useless discussions and philosophical debates… We take action.
As long as we know who we are and what we stand for we’ll be fine.
Viktor
P.S. Anyone out there that cannot stand the thought of wearing leather shoes can get great stuff from here and of course from here
As for me… I will continue going to the office barefoot…

Barefoot is best for me too
Where can I get the cool shoes in your graphic?

Seriously … I was about to kid you for launching a grenade into the mix when you asked the question this morning, but I had to dash off to work and didn’t have time to post.
I totally agree it is an individual decision – for me personally, I was raised on a cattle ranch in Alberta but have been vegetarian for 25 years and vegan for 1. I feed my animals a raw diet as that is the healthiest option for them and I have the means/ability to do so. I personally detest fur and the leather industry, preferring to wear animal-friendly options when available and choose all my cosmetics and home care products from companies that do NO animal testing…
Idealistic? Yes! Perfect? Far from it!
We need to promote a better world for animals thru kindness – and that includes kindness to one another
Far too many rescuers and rescue groups waste time fighting one another while animals die. Let’s focus our energies where they are most needed: saving the lives of animals!
I personally choose not to wear any animal products. For me it is not ok.However I would rather have an animal rescued and safe than not due to footwear choice.I don’t feel it is being a hypocrite as it is not about me or you or the choices we make it is about the animals!
Oh – wait, I found them! http://kobilevidesign.blogspot.com/2010/04/miao-2010.html
They are purrfect!
have to admitt ime finding it hard to answer this quistion ,
myself and my sister are vegatarian ,
but ive never given the thought to leather shoes ,
the only way i cn explain wot i meen is
leather comes from animals
that are slaughtered for food all over the world
apart from the animals . that are slaughtered just for there skins or there fur . i never have and never will wear fur , .
now ime in a differant frame of mind re my shoes and boots
i dont own a leather jacket , or handbag .
but do own leather shoes .
oh wot to do now ?
there was no point in me telling lies about this
oh wot to do now
advice needed please , xxxxxxx
I am vegan, inside and outside. And, no, it is not ok.
One does not have to be a vegan to rescue animals, but has to be one to honestly, deeply and unconditionally love them!
I refuse to buy anything that is leather or fur in any way! This just contributes to man’s insatiable need to murder helpless animals for the skin!! I would rather go bare foot as well!!

There is nothing strange about finding a raped dog in Turkey. It happens everywhere and you only have to spend some time on Facebook to discover many many cases, sometimes on a daily basis. But this case is a little different. The end result is the same, a dog is raped by a human and is killed afterwards… what is different is the LOCATION of the crime. The rape took place right behind the building of the Sincan Municipality in Ankara. A few meters away from a building constantly surveiled by security a dog is being raped, his screams are loud, can be heard from the distance… But nobody did anything… Please call the office of the mayor Mustafa Tuna on: Tell him dogs are being raped behind his office. One should be congruent with what you think, what you say and what you do. If you are into rescuing animals, adopted (or started adopting) a vegetarian / vegan lifestile…then you should not wear any leather or fur in your daily clothing…depends on each person. Complicated topic, though.
Eğer Shame on !!!!! Ne insanlar yaptı ??????
Shame on you !!!!! What did people ??????
I do NOT wear any animal skins or fur…..therefore, my answer is NO!!!
I personally am not a vegetarian and as a result eat meat and am fully aware of were that meat originates. my personal view is if you eat it or feed meat to your animals then it would be immoral not to wear the hide of any animal that is killed for food.
in my view just as immoral as killing an animal just for its hide as i result i will not wear anything i would not eat for example i do not like rabbit and i would not wear rabbit fur or carry an ( un-)lucky rabbits foot
Is it really ok and necessary to ask that question? I mean, like…I wanna save this animal! O no! you cant you have leather(something) no you cant, go away….
Shell we turn this in to a something dogmatic- hermetic- cult thing to save lives of animals in need, i`m sure the saved animals do not care whether someone wear something or not! and don tell me it is about principles and morale….. primary is to save, who…how….i don`t care.
Interesting question. I do believe that so few people are involved in animal rescue that it might not be great for rescue as a whole if rules were set down about personal choices around clothing/animal products. Maybe once someone is involved in rescue, their rescue colleagues could broach the subject. I think it would be very sad for people to be put off rescue work because of issues like this. Once someone is involved in rescue it can be easier for them to see the other issues.
I remember going shoeless through my childhood, not to mention hunger, and wore the same dress just about everyday, and today I have plenty shoes, and clothes, but still go barefoot 98% of the time, and I also remember how at a young age I had the compassion for homeless abandoned animals, and was always sneaking them in the house, and hidding them in my room, and my mom of course would always find them, and put them outside, and punish me, but I would go and find them, and make a little bed with paper or cardboard, and would go each day to either leave bread, or part of my meals to share, and play with them,I was only 7 yrs.old!!!
of course is NOT ok….how you can safe animals and then wear their dead parts…. specially that is not needed…. there are beautiful vegan shoes
Depends not if the person is an animal rehabber, but if the person is a vegetarian or vegan. That is if you are looking for consistency in their lifestyle.
For the record, I’m an omnivore, but one who wear sneakers all the time, or rubber wellies when in the field. barefoot at home. And own one leather pair of formal shoes for weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs. And some leather belts. When working full-time had to wear suit with tie and shoes.
Now when I shop I avoid anything leather if I can. But I find with enough research sneakers, artificial leather and fur, somewhere along the line, their production has caused some harm to the environment.
It all falls into the “do your best, and it isn’t good enough category” of good intentions.
no, i carefully buy clothes and shoes…
also am searching for NON LEATHER case for my Kindle, and there are no good cases.
Wahetevr.
The shoe is a fantastic piece of design thanks for the link M.J Murphy.
For me the task at hand is for rescuing animals from all backgrounds and circumstances, able bodied or handicapped and doing our utmost to STOP ANIMAL cruelty AND TO EDUCATE ON ANIMAL WELFARE also to get laws and legislation in place globally would be fantastic ,but definitely in the Developing Countries and the Countries within in the EU which involve imprisonment and hefty substantial finds which all the monies would be given directly to the Animal Charities.
No people who loves animals should wear any products who comes from the suffering of any animals. They know all cruelty done to them for our pleasures;
While there are many involved in rescue work who are not vegan, or even vegetarian (and I know and respect some of them) I personally find it hypocritical to save some animals while torturing and killing others. One is not a true animal lover if they cuddle one and eat/wear another – one could just as easily have a pet pig/cow and eat/wear cats/dogs – and we all know this happens. If one is looking to find loving adoptive homes, however, most of these people are carnists – they’ll love their pet but contribute the mass slaughter of every other animal on the planet.
It’s better than a NON-ANIMAL RESCUER wearing leather shoes. As an animal activist, I know NOT ONE other animal activist who is PERFECT.
It doesn’t make sense to be compassionate about the welfare of some animals and not others, in my opinion.
I believe that if one sees and injustice, one has a moral obligation to do something about it no matter what they are wearing. Not everyone or every situation is perfect. Although I do not eat meat, I feed it to my dogs and cats.
A good set of Linemans or “Combat” Boots are great servicing and easily re-cobbled.
While leather is an attractive chew-toy for most larger four-legged mammals,
I bottle of Sour Apple Spray CAN go a long-long way.
Ya dont want to utilize “Scram” as it may frighten your target even more and just make ones job a bit more difficult. (all that biting, growling and screaming can only make the animal more aggressive also)
Cancer, money, fire, destroy them until dust
I think it’s OK. In a world where animals are skinned alive, whales killed barbarically in the name of a festival, myriads of animals raped and killed for nothing everyday, saving an animal’s life should not be so much questioned I think… In the nature, there are plant eaters, meat eaters and both and most doctors agree humans are omnivores. So I think we must get from the nature just the very essential part, not an inch more. and leather is one part of it in my opinion. The significance of this question is like… talking about a sprained finger in a place where thousands of people are killed in a war… thereby overlooking the core problem…
As long that it’s from an animal who lived a good life and is being killed only for food then it’s ok to use the skin for shoes etc. I can fully respect for instance a greenlandish seal hunter who catches a seal – not an infant and not a mother animal – he uses every part of the animal – nothing goes to waste.
I will never accept that an animal is killed for it’s fur only.
Probably or certainly – yes, it is for the majority.
How many people do ask in the first place about an animal rescuer’s meal or clothing preferences before reading their rescuing stories ? Not too many, I guess.
If leather shoes will keep the rescuers walking the rough path without giving up, we should consider to even provide them with some more….
Not the shoes they are wearing will ever be stuck in anyone’s mind, but their shared success stories will…
… and about meal preferences…. well, thanks God, a huge life-saver’s ravenous appetite for KFC made the driver pull around a car the very last second to a KFC drive-in… otherwise we would have gone to the dogs…life is good….
Dear V……I truely admire u’re work and everything you do for the animals, but I strongly believe that once you get as big ( popular ) as you got with Let’s adopt global, this thing about leather becomes a veryyy bigg issue ! Why ?!? Because no matter what u call LAG, it still handles animals….especially cats and dogs ( but not exclusivly…as u have mentioned ). Ok….my rethorical question is HOW cand u ask a person to love cats, dogs…..when YOU , as a cat lover , a dog lover…an animal lover generally speaking EAT THEIR MEAT and WEAR THEIR SKINS ?!? How can someone follow u’re lead when u are a standing contradiction! Who choses which animals are to eat, to wear…and to be rescued? Ok…let’s say that is nobodys biznis what u eat at home…..but it’s everybody’s biznis what u wear ouside u’re house ! You are trying to set an exemple, u are trying to EDUCATE ppl not to harm animals , not to torture them. U are making a big thing about each animal’s case ! Who are we to tell ppl which are the animals they should protect and which are the ones they could not care about !?! And I also want to point out 2 of u’re contradictions… : U posted a commercial with Miss Turkey promoting a turkey sandwich and u expressed u’re feelings smth like this ” Poor girl…I wonder who is advising her “……Ok….question : was she wrong promoting sandwiches with MEAT because she is popular and maybe she si a row model for somebody……?!? and the second contradiction : U demand from the ppl that could possibly adopt animals rescued by u to feed those animals other animals. Question : are the animals u saved better or superior to the ones u feed them with ?!? It’s one thing the animals hunt their prays….and it’s a completely different one to make a DEMAND out of it ! The point is ….once u get somewhere where u can set an exemple u are allowed NO mistakes ! There is a quote that sounds like this ” “For everyone to whom much is given ( u are given CREDIT by many of us ), of him shall much be required ( since u are an exemple, either u like it or not ).” You can’t fight for animals ( and I don’t mean rights…..altough in the end it all comes to that , even if u don’t like the sound of it ) wearing their skins, eating their meat…and letting ppl know about how u feel upon this matter. U see…sometimes being a small person…like I am….it’s so much better. But u should know, I am trying to forgett about meat. It’s just wrong and confusing to say that u care for the animals, and still use their bodies !!!!! Maybe I’m wrong….but then again…..those animals that got on our plates suffered waaayyy worse then the ones you are trying to save and fight for! Peace….and I still like what u do…..Plz don’t teach me that wearing and eating animals is write…or that it has an excuse. You don’t need to promote veganism…just…try to focus on other issues…not these delicate kinda ones…..It diveides us in 2….!!! And I am not a vegetarian, I am just trying, hoping that soon enough I will succeed!
Animal rescue and wearing leather shoes are two different things. One can be a great animal rescuer and wear leather shoes with out giving a second thought about it. We can’t judge them by what they are wearing. But if the person has a full understanding of the suffering animals go through to provide leather for shoes, and still ignore it that is double stranded. I wouldn’t personally buy any product with animal fur or leather and go and tell the world I am against the sufffering of dogs or cats. Suffering is a suffering for all the living beings. If I rescue I will rescue all not just one kind.
“Plz don’t teach me that wearing and eating animals is write…”….Sorry, I meant RIGHT, not write !!!
Yes i agree it is individual. it is about what each of us want to do & follow & believe in. i am a vegan as much as i can be but i ride my horse on a leather saddle because it was made for her long before i bought her & it has moulded like a glove & her back health is important to me. so when silly people ask me why im using a leather saddle i just think they are trying to cause a cake fight as you mentioned above. i dont wear leather shoes but i have done. i try to avoid all products which have anything to do with animal testing but its not always possible if you need something. also my cats have flea control which cant be vegan? Keep doing what you are doing everyone, cos we’re all helping animals which can only be good.
NO………………………….it’s NOT OK!!!!!!!
dru
NO.
Hi… on the two contradictions…
1. My comment about Miss Turkey was not because it was a meat sandwich, its because the add was intrinsically was making fun of the name of the country. Being Miss Turkey has some obligations, and one of them is to represent the country, but not in that light..
2. Dogs and cats are carnivores… I expect our adoptants to feed carnivores with a biologically appropriate diet.
Imagine you buy a car that runs on gasoline and suddenly you decide you use diesel .. what do you think will happen to your car? Same here…
Cheers
No,I always wear “Earth” shoes Vegan
my dog… my future dog.. will eat watermelons and fruits and salads
i promise!
and my future dog will be the most “ugly one” – the one which nobody wants. Wish me luck with finding a home and a job for myself soon as possible
Sori.. note that I didn’t try to teach you that eating or wearing animals is right.
Heck, I haven’t even mentioned what I eat, or what I don’t eat.
What I tell you is that Let’s Adopt is a community that focus on the rescue of animals not on the dietary or fashion preferences of their rescuers.
We leave those to the conscience of the individuals.
UN TRES GRAND MERCI LET S ADOPT POUR TOUT LES SAUVETAGES QUE VOUS FAITES! MERCI!!!! JE VOUS ADORE !
i personally dont use any leather products. and i think if we are good enough to care for animals than this is one of those things where our concern should be extended.. i dont think its ok to wear leather and i believe in it firmly.
thanks..
I am about 98% vegan (I occasionally use honey) so I don’t (knowingly) consume animal products in any form ~ food, clothing, etc. My winter sweaters are acrylic and my shoes are either acrylic or cotton, with man made soles. I have always wondered how Elizabeth Taylor, who had such a passion for animals, could wear so much fur and leather. I know that in her day those things were status symbols, but no one could deny how they became clothing.
As for animal rescuers wearing leather shoes (or accessories), in a perfect world, we would all be vegan and all animals would be safe from torture and slaughter. I suppose if an animal rescuer eats meat, then wearing leather doesn’t present a conflict for them. I would for me, though.
A lot of people start out in animal rescue thinking of saving living domestic animals, never even thinking of all of the suffering that goes into their wardrobes and diets. My hope is that each of them will one day see that their wardrobes are diametrically opposed to their goals.
I think you do a great job rescuing animals and you and your group must be commended for all you do. However, why is it that to praise your own glories you must bash Peta? Can’t you just do what you do and leave other groups alone? I have never heard Peta bashing you so why don’t you return the favor. It would make you look like a better person.
