Kayışdağı’ndaki Yeditepe Üniversitesi’nde Acil Durum!

Bu sabah bir gönüllümüzden Yeditepe Üniversitesindeki köpeklerin toplanarak Tuzla ormanına götürülüp bırakılmasına karar verildiğini öğrendik. Bu köpeklerden bazıları en fazla bir kaç haftalık. Az önce üniversite rektörü Prof. Dr. Ahmet Serpil ile yaptığım telefon görüşmesinde, ki kendisi mükemmel İngilizce konuşuyor, kendisinin bu durumdan hiçbir şekilde haberi olmadığını ve derhal ilgili kişilerle konuşarak durduracağını belirtti.
Let’s Adopt daha önce de bu gibi durumlarla karşılaştı. En sonuncusu olan Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi şimdi uluslararası platformda kedilerin çuvallara doldurularak yollara atıldığı bir yer olarak biliniyor. Bu gibi olaylar sürekli oluyor ve bizi artık inanmama yoluna sevk ediyorlar.
Yine de Prof. Serpil’e bu konuda bir şans vereceğiz ve sözünü tutacağı konusunda güveniyoruz.
Lütfen Yeditepe Üniversitesi’nde çalışıyorsanız veya eğitim alıyorsanız bu konudan haberdar ve ihtiyatlı olunuz zira tecrübelerimiz bu konunun burada bitmeyeceğini söylüyor.

Emergency at Yeditepe University in Kayisdagi.

This morning we were informed by a volunteer that the Yeditepe University has decided to round up the dogs of the campus and dump them at the Tuzla forest.

Some of those dogs are barely weeks old.

A few minutes ago I got on the phone to the Rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Serpil who, in perfect english, explained me that he is totally unaware of such plans and that he would immediately speak to his people to halt them.

Lets Adopt has experienced this kind of situation before.

Last time at Yildiz Technical University, now internationally recognized as a place where cats are put in bags and dumped on the road.. they happen constantly, so we are inclined not to believe it.

Still, we will give a vote of confidence to Mr. Serpil and trust that he will honor his word.

In any case, if you are working or studying at the Yeditepe University please be aware and vigilant as experience tells us this issue wont end up here.

Modern Zamanlarda Soykırım

“Köpekleri bulundukları yerden kaldırmak veya öldürmek bir toplumun kopek fazlası problemine çözüm olamaz: sorunun kaynağı hakkında hiçbir çözüm getirmez.” – Köpek Nüfusu Yönetimi, WHO Geneva 1990 (Sayfa 74).

Soykırım: Kasıtlı ve sistematik olarak bir ırkın, politik ya da sosyal grubun yokedilmesi.

Bugün modern zamanlardaki bir soykırımdan söz edeceğiz.

Bugün odağımız ülkemizde, Türkiye’de, ırkından bağımsız bir türün tamamı üzerinde yürütülmekte olan bir soykırım. Bu tür, köpek…

Thirst

Her rejimin tercih ettiği bir metod oldu. Nazi Almanya’sı “Son Çözüm”ü gaz odalarında, açlıkta ölümde ve infazda buldu. Rwanda’da ise Hutu’ların seçtiği ölüm silahı uzun bıçaklarıydı. Toplu katliam ve tecavüz Balkanlar da tercih edilmişti.

Bugün, 2009’da, Türkiye’nin dört bir yanında belediyeler bir başka yöntem deniyorlar, Osmanlı’nın Hayırsız Ada’da denediğine benzer bir yöntem bu. Ülkemizde pek çok belediye sahipsiz sokak hayvanlarını metropolleri çevreleyen ormanlık alanlara atıyor. Bu alanlarda içecek bir yudum su, yiyecek bir lokma ekmek bulmak imkansız.

Desperation

Bu sistematik yokediş politikasının sonuçları ekteki fotoğraflarda görülebilir. Türkiye’nin her yerinde kentlerden toplanmış, kimi zaman kısırlaştırılmış ve ardından gecenin karanlığında ıssızlığın ortasında kaderine terkedilmiş köpeklerle ağzına kadar dolu. Yüzlerce, binlerce hayvan arabasıyla gelip geçenlerin şaşkın bakışları altında açlık ve susuzluktan ölüyor.

Bu fotoğraflarda gördüğünüz belediyelerin büyük çaplı ve genel bir biçimde bu ülkenin yasalarına karşı çıktığını göstermektedir. 5199 sayılı Hayvan Hakları Yasası açıkça kısırlaştırılan hayvanların alındıkları bölgeye geri bırakılmasını emrediyor. Son derece ironik ve trajik olan o ki bizzat yasaları uygulamakla görevli olanlar yasayı bu derece utanmaz bir umursamazlıkla yok sayabiliyorlar.

Hunger

Bu utanç verici durum mutlaka sona ermeli ancak kendi başına son bulmasını da bekleyemeyiz. Politik güçlerin bir anda, yasal olmayan davranışlarıyla yarattıkları ekolojik katliamın farkına varıp vicdanlarını dinlemeye başlamalarını beklemek büyük saflık olur. Eko-sistemler büyük zarar görmekte, ormanlar bu keskin yoksunluğa katlanamayan hayvanların çürümekte olan bedenleriyle dolu. Bu hayvanların acısını dindirmek için savaşan pek çok insanın hayatı da bu nedenle kökünden değişmiş durumda.
Ulusal medyanın ve kamuoyunun bu konu hakkında aktif bir duruş sergilemesinin; ülkemize utanç veren ve itibarını zedeleyen devasa bir yokedimle karşı karşıya olduğumuzu anlamasının zamanı geldi. Verdiği görüntü ve algılanış biçimine dair kaygıları olan Türkiye gibi bir ülkenin konunun çözümüyle yakından içtenlikle ilgilenmesi ve soruna mantık ev insanlık ışığında yaklaşması gerekiyor.

Bu gerçekleşinceye kadar modern zamanların soykırımı devam edecek… gözlerimizin önünde hem de.

Modern Day Genocide

A modern day Genocide.

“Removal and killing of dogs should never be considered as the most effective way of dealing with a problem of surplus dogs in the community: it has no effect whatsoever on the root cause of the problem.” – Guidelines for Dog Population Management, W.H.O. Geneva 1990 (page 74).

Genocide: the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group.

We are going to focus on a modern-day genocide.

We will focus on the genocide committed today, in Turkey, our country, against a whole species, independently of its race. The Dog.

Thirst

Every regime has a preferred method. Nazi Germany chose a variety of methods to apply its “final solution”, gas chambers, death by starvation, executions. In Rwanda, the Hutu’s method of choice was death by long knife. Mass rape and executions were preferred in the Balkans.

Today, in 2009, Municipalities around Turkey are opting for a different method, but one that was already applied by the Otomans in Hayirsiz Ada… A large number of municipalities in Turkey are sending their stray dogs to the forests circling metropolitan areas; areas where they have neither a piece bread nor a drop of water to survive.

Desperation

The result of this systematic policy of extermination can be seen in the following pictures. Forests all around Turkey are filled to the brim with dogs collected in the cities, neutered (at times) and then dumped in the middle of the night in a location away from any inhabited settlement. Hundreds, thousands of animals starving and dehydrating to death under the disbelieving eyes of those who drive by.

What you see in this pictures if a massive and general act of breaking the law on the part of Municipalities. Animal welfare Law 5199 clearly states that stray dogs must be neutered and returned to the precise location where they were found. It is somewhat ironic and tragic that laws are being broken with such a blatant nonchalance by those people who were supposed to enforce them.

Hunger

This shameful state of affairs must stop, but it won’t stop by itself. It is completely misguided to live in the hope that the political powers will suddenly acquire conscience of the ecological cataclysm they are causing with their unlawful behavior. Entire ecosystems are being damaged. Forests all around the country are now littered with the rotting bodies of those who couldn’t survive this absolute deprivation. The lives of many people are completely transformed too, as they are fighting with all their might to alleviate the suffering of all those animals.

It is time for national press and the general public to take an active stance on this issue. It is time for the Press to understand that we are facing here is a massive act of destruction which brings shame and disrepute to our nation. A nation as concerned about is image and the way it’s perceived as Turkey should make a concerned and sincere effort, and a logical and humanistic approach in solving this situation.

Until it does so, this modern-day genocide will continue. Right under your very eyes.

Her gün üyelerimizden o veya bu hayvan hakları sorunu için onlarca dilekçe imza isteği alıyoruz.

Bunu yapmayacağımızı ve nedenlerini anlatmak istiyorum.

Bence dilekçeler müthiş şeyler.Dünyanın her yanında on binlerce, yüz binlerce hayvan hakları savunucusu imzalıyor bunları, nerdeyse her gün. Biz değil.

Öncelikle, birisini desteklesek her birini desteklemek zorundayız. Ardından, eğer her birini tek tek inceleyecek ve imzalayacak olsak başka hiç bir şeye zamanımız kalmaz. Son olarak ve herşeyden önemlisi, çoğu defa bunların sonuca ulaştığına inanmıyorum.

Dilekçelerin uzun ve renkli bir tarihçesi var. Örneğin en sevdiklerimizden birisi 1783’te William Wilbeforce tarafından Britanya Parlamentosu’na verilendir. Burada Willam Willeforce ve imzacılar köle ticaretinin sona erdirilmesini rica ederler. Bu iğrenç ticaret 25 Mart 1807’de sona erer.

Bugün, 21. Yüzyılda teknolojik gelişmeler bize sivil toplumun bireyleri olarak çok daha etkin olma fırsatı getirdi.

Bloglar ve vatandaş haberciliği harika gereçler, ancak bunları esaslı bir sosyal medya anlayışıyla birleştirince etkileri katlanarak artıyor.

Son bir ay içinde Sahip Çıkalım! Bu tür 3 etkinliğin içinde yer aldı. Bir: HaberTürk’ün sokak köpekleri hakkındaki editorial yaklaşımını değiştirdik. İki: Yıldız Üniversitesi rektörünü kampüsteki kedilerin bakımını üstlenen gönüllülerle işbirliği yapmaya ikna etti. Ve son olarak bugün, arkadaşımız Tolga Yıldız sahibinden.com’u boykot kampanyasında başarısını ilan etti.

Sahibinden.com yöneticileri sitelerinde bundan böyle evcil hayvan satışı yapılmayacağını, bunun yerine yurdun dört köşesinde barınaklarda acı ve çaresizlik içinde kıvranan hayvanların sahiplendirilmesi için bir platform yaratacaklarını bildirdiler.

Bu, bir yerde Tolga’nın zaferi ve buradan kendisini cesareti ve kararlılığı için kutluyoruz. Ancak, Tolga tek başına bu sonuca ulaşamazdı. Sizin sayenizde, sizin telefonu elinize alıp aramanız, değişiklik için mektup ve emailler yazmanız sayesinde bu zafere ulaşıldı.

Yani, bu sadece Tolga’nın değil sizin de zaferiniz.

Dr. Doom, looking for a family

We are receiving daily requests from members who ask us to support petitions on behalf one or another animal cause.

We can’t do that for them but I thought I’d tell you why.

I think petitions are great. Tens of thousands of animal welfare activists around the world sign not one but many of them on a daily basis. Not for us though.

First, if we supported one petition we would have to support all of them. Second, it takes too much of our time to even think about them, never mind sign them. Finally, and most importantly, I am convinced they don’t work most of the time.

Petitions have a long and illustrious history. One of our favorites was presented to the British Parliament in 1783 by William Wilbeforce. In it, Wilbeforce and the undersigned requested the abolition of slave trade. This abhorrent trade was finally abolished on 25th March 1807.

Today, in the 21st century technology has changed everything and it has granted us more effective ways to create change in civil society.

Blogs and citizen journalism are great tools but if you combine them with a good understanding of social media, their effect increases exponentially.

In the last month Let’s Adopt! has been involved in three such actions. First, we made HaberTurk change its editorial line on stray dog issues. Secondly, we convinced the rector of the Yildiz Technical University to cooperate with the volunteer groups caring for the cats in the campus. And finally today, our friend Tolga Akyildiz, announced the success of his Boycott Sahibinden.com Campaign.

The Management of sahibinden.com has announced that there won’t be any more advertisements promoting sales of companion animals on their site. Instead, they will create a platform for the adoption of animals languishing in shelters all over the country.

This is partly Tolga’s victory and from here we salute his courage and decision. However, Tolga alone could not have achieved these great results. It was thanks to YOU. YOU took the time to grab the phone and call, you took the time to write and email and express your wish for change.

So this is not only Tolga’s victory. It is YOUR victory too.

You are all wonderful…

Ankara’nın meşhur (!) Haykod barınağının yöneticisi Gamze Erkök Neer bir bildiri yayınlayarak Sahip Çıkalım gönüllülerinin hayvanlarını asla kurtaramayacağını iddia etti.

Bu bildiri zaten kendi içinde son derece acıklı çünkü bu insanların köpekleri kafeslere tıkmak yerine kurtarıp sahiplendirmeye çalışmaları gerekiyor.

Göreceğiniz fotoğraflar bu kurtarma operasyonlarından birisine ait.. Bu iki bebek Ankara Haykod barınağından kurtarıldı. Görevlinin başlangıçtaki direnci de 50 lirayla kırıldı.

Cehennemden cennete, Ankara’daki gönüllülerimiz sayesinde.

İki hasta bebek derhal Istanbul’a getirilip veteriner bakımı altına alındı ve geçici evlerimizden birisine alındı. Dört ay sonra bir arkadaşımızla yaşamak üzere Barselona’ya (İspanya) gittiler.

Sahip Çıkalım! gönüllülerini İstanbul ve diğer kentlerdeki barınakları ziyaret ederek buralardan bir kedi veya köpek kurtarmaya ve biz bu cana yeni bir ev bulana kadar geçici ailelik yapmaya çağırıyor.

Dünkü mesajımızda da belirttiğimiz gibi bu insanlar bu barınakların sorumluluğunu alabilecek niteliklere sahip değiller. Sahip Çıkalım! hayvanları bu insanların elinden kurtarmak için SİZDEN yardım bekliyor.

Yesterday Gamze Neer, the manager of an infamous Ankara shelter, HAYKOD, issued a statement saying that they would never allow Let’s Adopt volunteers to rescue any of their dogs.

This statement, in itself is very sad, as those people should be working towards rescuing and re-homing dogs instead of keeping them locked in cages.

The pictures you are about to see are the story of one of those rescues. Those two little puppies were rescued from the HAYKOD shelter in Ankara. The initial resistance on the part of the employee was soon forgotten with the help of that great problem solver… a 50 lira note.

The two ill puppies were immediately flown to Istanbul, given proper veterinary care and placed on one of our foster homes. Four months later they were flown to Barcelona (Spain) were they live with a friend of us.

From hell to heaven thanks to our Let’s Adopt volunteers in Ankara.

In coming days we will be disclosing similar stories of animals we have been rescuing from shelters all across Turkey.

Let’s Adopt would like to encourage its volunteers to visit any shelter in Istanbul and other cities to rescue a dog or a cat from there and to keep him at home on a foster home basis whilst we find the perfect family for him. As we described on yesterday’s post the people currently involved in those shelters shouldn’t be allowed to handle such responsibilities, Let’s Adopt will do its very best to save as many animals from the hands of those people but to do so we need YOUR help.

Bundan iki yıl önce Sahip Çıkalım! kurulduğunda amaçlarımızdan biri de İstanbul’un çeşitli barınaklarında bulunan çaresiz hayvanlara yardım etmekti. Ancak çok kısa zaman içinde bunun imkansız olduğunu öğrendik. Sahip Çıkalım! yeni bir sistem ve bambaşka değerlerle gelerek oturmuş düzene karşı çıktı ve barınaklardaki hayvanlara savaş esiri muamelesi yapan “eski ekol” gönüllüler buna çok da sıcak bakmadı. Ne zaman kör, üç bacaklı kedi ve köpeklere yardım elimizi uzatsak reddedildik. Ne kadar şeffaf olduğumuzu göstermeye çalıştıysak o kadar dinlenmedik… hatta şiddete bile maruz kaldık.

Sonra, yaklaşımımızı değiştirdik.

Son iki yıldır Sahip Çıkalım! Gönüllüleri İstanbul’daki barınakları ziyaret ederek çaresiz durumdaki köpekleri kurtarıyor. Bazılarını verdiğimiz link’te görebilirsiniz. Onlardan daha çok ama çok var. Bu köpekler acilen onaylı kliniklerimize götürülerek tedavi edildi, çoğu zaman ameliyata alındı, tedavisi zor kırıklarda ise Avrupa’da tedavi olmak üzere yurt dışına gönderildiler. Bu durumlardaki köpeklerimizin büyük çoğunluğu, hayat kurmak için herşeyi göze alan bir grup özel insan, yani en yakın gönüllülerimiz tarafından sahiplenildi. Burada isim vermek istemiyorum, onlar kendilerini biliyorlar. Zaten liste çok uzun…

Üsküdar (Asude Ustaoğlu yönetiminde) ve Gürpınar (Sema Mandev yönetiminde) barınakları gibi bir çök barınaktan çok sayıda köpek kurtardık. İzmir’den, Ankara’dan, Bolu’dan, Adana’dan… Ankara’daki meşhur (!) Haykod barınağından kurtarabildiğimiz her can bize apayarı bir mutluluk vermiştir hep. Her defasında bu çocuklar İstanbul’daki kusursuz yuvalarında, kusursuz hayatlara kavuştular ve gerçek hayvanseverlerle çevrili oldular, hayatına bir çeşit anlam vermeye çalışan “toplayıcılar”la değil.

Bu kurtarma operasyonları hakkında birşey yazmadık… neden? Çünkü hayvanları kurtarmaya ve bu işin nasıl yapıldığını göstermeye odaklandık.

Barınaklardaki gönüllülere, özellikle de sahiplendirme yapanlara şu dört öneride bulunmak istiyoruz:

1. Sahiplendirmenin ilk ve en önemli koşulu ikametgah DEĞİLDİR, sahiplenenin karakteridir. Başka bir deyişle, birisine bir köpek veya kedi vermeden önce onun bir hayvan sahiplenmenin ne demek olduğunu anladığına emin olmanız lazım. Bu sıradan bir öneri gibi görünebilir. Sahiplendirme yapan yöneticiler gördüğümüz en kötü karakter analizcileri.

2. Bakımından sorumlu olduğunuz hayvanların sağlığını korumak ve kollamak gibi çok kutsal bir göreviniz var. Yerine getirin! Bu korkunç barınaklardan kurtardığımız kaç hayvanda PARVO virüsü olduğunu duysanız kulaklarınıza inanamazsınız. Bunların her birini elimizdeki tıbbi olanaklar sayesinde kurtardık, bulamadığımız ilaçları da, maliyeti ne olursa olsun, ithal ettik. Bu şekilde sayısız can kurtuldu.

3. ASLA ama ASLA av için veya güvenlik amacıyla kullanmak isteyenlere köpek vermeyin. Bu hayvanlar sizin kararınızın bedelini yaşamlarıyla öderler.

4. Son olarak, bizimki gibi kuruluşlardan yardım alın. Sizin bakımınız altında giren hayvanlar size ait değildir. Göreviniz onları korumaktır. Bu görevi yerine getiremediğiniz noktada ahlaki vazifeniz başkalarından yardım almayı kabul etmektir.

Lütfen bu link’e tıklayın ve bu yazıda sözünü ettiğimiz hayvanların önce-sonra hallerine bir bakın. Bu fotoğraflar barınaklardaki sistemin çalışmadığını ve ciddi bir şekilde düzeltilmesi gerektiğini gösteren kanıtlar. Bizim bu barınakların yöneticilerine tavsiyemiz derhal sahiplendirme koşullarını gözden geçirmeleri ve vermiş oldukları hayvanların durumunu acilen kontrol etmeleridir. Büyük ve acı bir sürprizle karşılaşabilirler, çünkü biz bu hayvanların büyük bir bölümünün başka barınaklarda veya daha da kötü bir durumda olduğuna eminiz.

Gitmeden önce önemle üzerinde durmak isteriz ki, Sahip Çıkalım, gönüllülerinin yardımı olmadan bu hayat kurtarma operasyonlarını gerçekleştiremezdi. Onlara destekleri için, tüm içtenliğimle teşekkür ediyor ve bütün üyelerimizi, yaptıklarımıza sadece yardım isteyerek değil yardım ederek de katılmaları konusunda cesaretlendirmek istiyorum.

Tüm bunlar, bu barınakların başında olanların birgün “hapishane bekçisi” yerine “hayvan sever” olduğu günleri görmek için…

Why is this post important? Because it marks the beginning of a new system. Because it is the proof that the current adoption systems in Turkish shelters doesn’t work. Its a sham. A number of people in those shelters, far from being animal lovers they have just become glorified hoarders, and people for whom animal protection is nothing but a power game, a game of control over the lives of innocent animals.

When Let’s Adopt was founded two years ago it was our intention to help the different shelters in Istanbul to rehome their animals in desperate need. However, it soon became obvious that this would not be possible. Let’s Adopt introduced a new system, a completely different set of values, a challenge of the status quo, and the old guard, the volonteers that treated those poor animals in shelters like their own “prisoners of war” didn’t like it. Every time we offered our help in rehoming three legged animals, blind animals, dogs and cats in desperate situation our offers of help were refused. Reasons? God only knows… No matter how much we tried to show them our completely transparent system those people wouldnt listen… and at times they even became violent.

We then changed our approach.

For the last 2 years volunteers of Let’s Adopt have been visiting Istanbul’s shelters and rescuing dogs in desperate condition. You can watch some of them in the following link, there are many many more. Those dogs were inmediately taken to our approved clinics for emergency treatments, in many cases they were in need of surgeries, in the case of broken bones they were sometimes flown to Europe for life saving operations.  The vast majority of cases though those dogs were rehomed amongst our closest volonteers, a very special group of people who would do anything to save a life. I wont mention any names, they all know who they are, the list would be too long anyway….

We have rescued scores of dogs from shelters like Uskudar (run by Asude Ustaoglu), Gurpinar (Sema Mandev), and many many others, Izmir, Ankara, Bolu, Adana… special pleasure it gives us every time we rescue a dog from the infamous Haykod shelter in Ankara. Each and everyone of those animals lives a perfect life in a perfect home in Istanbul, surrounded by REAL animal lovers, not just glorified hoarders in search of some sense to their lifes.

We never said anything about those rescues… why? Because we focussed on saving animals and in showing others how to do so.

We would like to give four pieces of advice to the volunteers of those shelters, specially those in charge of adoptions:

1. The single most important factor for the success of an adoption is NOT the proof of address, it is the character of the adoptant. In other words, before you give a dog to anyone make sure that person understands what it is to have a dog. This sounds like simple advice. The vast majority of cases those adoption “officers” are the worst evaluators of character we have ever met.

2. You have a sacred responsibility to improve the health conditions of the animals under your care. Fulfill it. You would be shocked at the amount of animals with Parvo we have rescued from those abject shelters. We managed to save all of them thanks to having at our disposal the most advanced treatments available, and when they were not available we imported them from overseas, regardless of the cost. Countless lives have been saved this way.

3. NEVER give dogs to people who plan to use them as security guards or to hunters. Those animals end up paying your decision with their lives.

Finally…

4. Accept offers of help from organizations such as ours. The unfortunate animals that fell under your care do not belong to you. Your obligation is to protect them. The moment you fail to fulfill that obligation it is your moral responsibility to accept help from others.

Those pictures are proof that the system on those shelters doesnt work and needs serious improvement. Our suggestion to the management of those shelters would be to inmediately reorganize their rehoming procedures and to check on the current state of the animals they gave in adoption. They are up for a surprise, as we are convinced a great number of those animals have been left in other shelters, or worst.

Finally,and very important, Let’s Adopt could not perform its life saving operations without the assistance of our volonteers. To them I must humbly thank for their support whilst encouraging all our other members to get involved in our work not only by asking for help but by offering your help to us.

In the hope that one day, “animal lovers” involved in shelter work start acting as such instead of “jail masters”…
